Il Mare Nel Cassetto
Milva was born on July 17, 1939, in Goro, Italy. Her singing career began in 1959 when she won a singing competition on Italian television (RAI). In 1961, she achieved third place at the Sanremo Festival with the song "Il mare nel cassetto." That same year, she won first place at the Giugno della canzone napoletana with "Credere" and third place with "Mare verde." Milva participated in the Sanremo Festival a total of 15 times between 1961 and 2007. Her greatest success there was "Tango italiano," which came in second place in 1962. Also in 1962, she became the first non-French artist to sing songs by Édith Piaf at the Olympia in Paris. That same year, she landed her first film roles in three movies: *La bellezza di Ippolita*, *Appuntamento in Riviera*, and *Canzoni a tempo di twist*. In the 1980s and 90s, she again appeared in several feature films. She sang her songs not only in Italian, but also in French, English, and German. Her biggest hit in Germany was the song "Hurra, wir leben noch" (Hooray, We're Still Alive). Milva enjoyed great success throughout Europe and received numerous awards both at home and abroad. She became one of the most successful chanson artists and also released numerous tango recordings. In September 2010, Milva announced that she would no longer perform due to health reasons.
