Nana Mouskouri was born on October 13, 1934, in Chania on the island of Crete. At the age of 15, she began her musical training at the Athens Conservatory. In the late 1950s, she launched her career as a singer with the quartet "Athenians." Her first single was released in Greece in 1958. In 1959, she won the Greek Song Festival, and in 1960, she achieved her breakthrough in her native Greece with compositions by Mikis Theodorakis. Her biggest hit, "White Roses from Athens," followed in 1961. She recorded it in several languages, earning her first gold record. The single, along with "I Watch the White Clouds" and "Once Again the South Wind Blows," reached number one on the German sales charts. In 1962, she produced a jazz album in the USA with producer Quincy Jones and released several more singles in various languages. She toured throughout Europe and became an international star. Nana Mouskouri enjoyed repeated chart successes. However, from the mid-1960s onward, she focused more on releasing albums. With "Only Love" (Aber die Liebe bleibt), she achieved another top hit in England and Germany in 1987. Nana Mouskouri can look back on a career spanning over four decades and is still a celebrated star on stages across Europe with a large and loyal fan base.
