Born into a musical household on August 30, 1924, in Fairfield, Texas, McKinley Howard "Kenny" Dorham was raised by his mother Minnie. He began playing the piano at age seven, and three years later, encouraged by his sister, he took up the trumpet too, and spent much of his spare time thereafter jamming with friends or playing in the school marching band. The young musical protégé was also a keen amateur boxer.
