Sound Of Paros, The
Ama Reverie
The Sound of Paros returns with Ama Rêverie, a three-track EP recorded in Paris at Studio A,ronef. Contemporary jazz, spoken word and cinematic textures converge in a maritime reverie shaped by three figures: a mysterious mariner drifting from port to port, the legendary Ama (??) Japan's free-diving women who descend to harvest abalone, carrying an ancient tradition of endurance and deep connection to the sea, and a nocturnal presence rising from the "deep, deep blue" with fragments of light and memory. The EP draws inspiration from the Italian anthropologist Fosco Maraini, whose 1954 photographs of Ama divers first brought the world of Japan's sea women to international attention. Three voices guide the journey: Jennifer Forse accompanies the voyage of a silent sea wanderer the sea refuses to release, Maki Nakano, clarinetist and haiku poet with roots in the Ama tradition of Osatsu, evokes the daily life of the sea women, and singer Ava Celly closes the EP with a ghostly, dream-like confession from the depths. Marc Buronfosse, Antoine Karakostas, Ferruccio Gadani and Panagiotis Kostopoulos build cinematic soundscapes bridging Mediterranean jazz with Japanese aesthetics.
