Rob Scheps returns to SteepleChase with Blue States, a vivid new chapter for the long-running Core-tet and a striking evolution from his 2019 release Comencio (SCCD 31866). Drawing on the same sharp instincts praised in earlier reviews - his "big-toned" authority and the "loose, inviting allure" of his soprano - Scheps expands his palette here with an unexpected but compelling front line of trumpet, soprano saxophone, and flute. The result is a sound world both airy and electric, shaped by Scheps gift for uncovering overlooked gems: music by Shunzo Ohno, Carla Bley, Sam Jones, Ronnie Boykins, and John Abercrombie, all reimagined with the Core-tets signature clarity and drive.
