Richards, Monica
Hiraeth (turquoise)
Searching for the meaning behind the title of Monica Richards' new solo album, "Hiraeth", one encounters a word that seems to contain entire worlds within it. Of Welsh origin, hiraeth resists any simple translation. It speaks of nostalgia, loss, longing and melancholy; of the desire to return to something to which we may no longer be able to return. It is the profound yearning for another place, another time, a distant country of the soul that might be our childhood, a half-forgotten memory, an era long since vanished, or even a life that changed somewhere along the way and now lies beyond our reach. Perhaps because it was lost. Perhaps because it changed. Or perhaps because it only ever truly existed within us
