Mareggini, Giovanni / Uchimoto, Kumi (piano)

Sound Without Borders

This production, featuring Italian flutist Giovanni Mareggini and Japanese pianist Kumi Uchimoto, explores some works by contemporary composers from a variety of geographical and cultural provenances and backgrounds. Italian composers Nicola Sani and Ivan Fedele are represented by one work each: Sanis I binari del tempo is a "duet" for flute and magnetic tape, exploring the multidimensionality of time (it was premiered by Mareggini at La Scala in 1999), whilst Fedeles Dedica is a touching piece, dedicated to Mario Caroli, for unaccompanied flute. Allusions to culture and literature, as well as personal homages, are also found in the other pieces, which are for flute and piano duet. Together, these works explore the fertile creative season that, from the 1950s onwards, saw the flute at the forefront of the most advanced explorations of musical language, though going beyond the most debatable experiments of the avant-gardes. Some pieces favour rhythmic-melodic figurative play, others pursue a purely timbral investigation, while still others reclaim an exquisitely cantabile dimension. The most recent works recorded here were written form, and dedicated to, the performing artists.
