1 - ACCORDING TO WHAT - A TIME YOU FELT INSECURE AROUND ALL YOUR FRIENDS - (CD)    UPDATED
JIGSAW

Ooh, this one's tricky to describe! Out of the gate, they remind me a lot of Kiddo, but the more I listen to the record, the more I think fondly of forgotten bands from indie rock's past like Humidifier, Dunebuggy and Moped (and if I wanted to go back even further, I'd also add the Embarrassment). Anyways, the band hail from Madison, WI, and typically exist as a four-piece, though this album was primarily recorded by the band's leader, Luis Perez, and drummer, Etan Heller (with plentiful vocal help from non-member, Mary Begley). Following a digital EP released on their Bandcamp last year, this is their first official release, and it indeed shows great promise! I'd love to catch this band live someday. You know, in the after...

2 - ALL ASHORE! - STAYING AFLOAT - (CD)    UPDATED
JIGSAW

Ah, they just don't make playful twee-pop like this anymore. Well, it's not totally extinct yet (thanks, Tullycraft!), but gone are the delightful days of Fat Tulips, Talulah Gosh, the Haywains, etc... not to forget comparable North American bands, like Cub and Bunnygrunt (before they both abandoned indiepop for powerpop, of course!). Enter All Ashore! (with the exclamation mark a part of the band's name, naturally) - this group of not-so-youngsters hail from the middle of England and contain members of the Parallelograms & Velodrome 2000. And they are determined to put twee-pop back in the charts! Well, maybe not the charts, but at least on popkids' playlists, what with their extremely fun songs about indiepop and its heyday...

3 - NOBLE, HUGH J. - THE BEACH BOY - (CD)    UPDATED
JIGSAW

I've been following Hugh and his music off and on for the last decade and a half, starting with the cd-rs he released on his own Actionpop! Records (which also had other fine artists on its "roster"), and even featured a few of his songs as a "Demo of the Week" on that ancient relic o' mine, IndiePages. And of course, he's no stranger to Jigsaw, as evidenced by the debut album from his current band, Slum Summer, in early 2009. This album, however, is a return to his solo roots, courtesy of the forced isolation the world is experiencing. Sometimes minimal and acoustic, other times with drum & bass accompaniment, this is a rich assortment of songs about places and relationships. Were it not for Hugh's distinctive voice, I could've been tricked into thinking this was a Joe Pernice or Darren Hayman solo album, or maybe even something from the Lucksmiths' softer side. A lovely album for such dark times...
