1 - ASHBY, DOROTHY - HIP HARP ON A MINOR GROOVE - (LP)
DOXY

This LP brings together for the first time, HIP HARP and IN A MINOR GROOVE, the two albums recorded in 1958 by the legendary jazz harpist and polistrumentist Dorothy Ashby. Dorothy Ashby had a unique soul jazz harp sound, and although the instrument she used is probably more thought of in terms of bedtime lullabies, she actually makes it swing nicely, and with a soulful sound that draws back to traditions of African stringed instruments. Ashby was part of the same scene as Yusef Lateef, and like Lateef, she managed to use odd instrumentation in new contexts, to get a very unique jazz sound."In HIP HARP in addition to the interpretations of standards like Moonlight In Vermont, Dancing In The Dark, Charmaine and Theres A Small Hotel, Dorothy and Frank work out on three Ashby tunes: Pawky, a minor-key blues, Back Talk, major-key blues and Jollity, a medium-up original. Dorothy Ashby has added to the basic territory that the harp previously occupied. In fusing her sometimes guitar-like, swinging line to the expected harp effects, she has added another step to the instrument-scope of jazz(...) (from the original liner notes)"IN A MINOR GROOVE is so named because all of the tunes are set in that particular mode. They represent a mixture of standards, jazz originals and one fairly recent pop song. Like the first set featuring Dorothy Ashby and Frank Wess (Hip Harp), this is not rock em, sock em jazz; it is far from the cloying effects of the kind of performances often associated with jazz of a low decibel nature" (from the original liner notes)Numbered first press of 500 copies.

2 - ASHBY, DOROTHY - SOFT WINDS: THE SWINGING HARP OF... - (LP)
DOXY

Dorothy Ashby may not be the first jazz harpist (Caspar Reardon) or the first female jazz harpist (Adele Girard), but her good feeling for time and ability to construct melodic, guitar-like lines, mark her as the most accomplished modern jazz harpist (...) Accompanying her was another Detroit girl, Terry Pollard. Terrys main instrument is the piano and she is one of the best in the country, bar none. She is also a pretty fair country vibraharpist and in this set, Miss Pollard plays vibes exclusively. With them is still another Detroiter, Herman Wright, who like Miss Pollard has worked with Terry Gibbs and Yusef Lateef, and who also served as Miss Ashbys regular bassist(...) Completing the quartet is Jimmy Cobb, drummer for the Miles Davis group. During the proceedings, Cobb travels between brushes and sticks without upsetting the equilibrium of this essentially quiet set. There is a wide range of material presented here, from blues like Benny Goodmans title number, Soft Winds, and Miss Ashbys With Strings Attached, to movie themes such as Laura, Wild Is the Wind and The Guns of Navarone. Then there are works by such superior writers of standards as Kurt Weill (My Ship); Gershwin (The Man I Love and Love Is Here to Stay)(orig.liner notes)

TRACKLISTING: 01. Soft Winds 02. Wild Is The Wind 03. The Man I Love 04. My Ship 05. Love Is Here To Stay 06. Ive Never Been In Love Before 07. With Strings Attached 08. Laura 09. The Guns Of Navarone 10. Misty 11. The Gypsy In My Soul

A seminal album of the French ye-ye era, Francoise Hardys self-titled debut (known in the US as The "Yeh-Yeh" Girl From Paris!) was released shortly after her debut single "Oh Oh Chri" in 1962. The success of this album, along with its hit "Tous Les Garons Et Les Filles", made the eighteen-year-old French bombshell a huge star in Europe and an icon of the French fashion and music industries. 11 - HOLIDAY, BILLIE - BILLIE'S BEST - (LP)
DOXY

This selection is drawn from Billie Holidays recordings of the mid-1950s. Her voice possessed a unique presence, a sound that seems lit up by a resilient vitality. Producer Norman Granz set Holiday among the small jazz combos that suited her talents best, groups that included some of the finest soloists of her generation, such as trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison and saxophonists Benny Carter and Ben Webster. Granz also supplied ideal rhythm sections, with pianist Jimmy Rowles and guitarists Kenny Burrell and Barney Kessel making appearances here. Theres more room to stretch out than was available on the early Columbia and Commodore recordings, and the results are relaxed and profound treatments of some great songs.

13 - JACKSON, WANDA - JACKSON, WANDA - (LP)
DOXY

Originally released in 1958, by the time her debut album came out Jackson, only 21 at the time, was already a seasoned performer. Discovered while still in high school singing country for an Oklahoma City radio station, by 1955 she was touring with Elvis Presley, who encouraged her to sing more in the rockabilly style, where she soon gained a huge fan base. However, this first album for Capitol shows just how versatile she could be, able to sing anything from traditional country to pop. She was also, interestingly the first country singer to bring a more glamourous style (one that would soon become standard in the country world) into her stage image, thanks to her mother's handmade flashy stage costumes. Contains 6 bonus tracks from the CD version. Track listing - Side A: 1. Day Dreaming 2. I Wanna Waltz 3. Heartbreak Ahead 4. Making Believe 5. Here We Are Again 6. Long Tall Sally 7. Just Call Me Lonesome 8. Let Me Go Lover 9. Money, Honey Side B: 1. I Cant Make My Dreams Understand 2. Happy, Happy Birthday 3. Lets Have A Party Bonus Tracks: 4. Half As Good As A Girl 5. Cutting sides for Bluebird between 1939-1942, McClennans rough, slightly unhinged style made him one of the more unique voices in the Delta and he was the first to record the classic "Cross Cut Saw Blues" along with the well known "Shake Em On Down", "Bottle It Up And Go", and dozens more. 17 - MCGHEE, BROWNIE -& SONNY TERRY- - BLUES IN MY SOUL - (LP)

"Brownie and Sonny work excellently together, not as a convenience certainly, and not just because theyre both blues men. I think its because theyre such good foils for one another; whatever brought them together brought together talents that are exceptional contrasts and complements - in background, style, and in emotion. And in a sense, together they span many years of development in the blues. Add Roy Haynes on the second side of this LP, and we are covering a lot of ground (...)" 22 - RUSSELL, GEORGE -SEPTET- - THE STRATUS SEEKERS - (LP)
DOXY

"Color" is a word that crops up with great frequency whenever George Russell discusses music. "Dixieland has a color," he has said; "bop is a definite color, and so is atonality." Following that train of thought, one might extend Russells thesis and refer to him as a kaleidoscopic musi- cal figure: so many different "colors," to use his phrase, appear on this album in so many shifting patterns that such a designation becomes almost inevitable (...) Colors, kaleidoscopes, and a music that insists on pushing its way out of arbitrary bags and containers. And although Russells music is experimental, often difficult, and based on considerable technical theory, it is definitely full of just such vivid, electric and appealing qualities. (from the original liner notes)Numbered limited edition of 500 copies

23 - SHAW, ARTIE - BOTH FEET IN THE GROOVE - (LP)
DOXY

Artwork by ANDY WARHOL 1956Born in New York City in 1910 and raised in New Haven, Connecticut, Artie Shaw worked for several years as a saxophonist and clarinetist in name bands, and as a free-lance studio musician in Manhattan radio and recording work, before his career as a bandleader began, almost by accident, in 1935. In the spring of 1937 Artie started a new band with the regular saxes-brass-rhythm instrumentation. This was the band that catapulted him to fame a year later when he recorded Begin the Beguine. Some of the numbers in this album go back to that era; in fact one tune, Comin On, was recorded on the same day at the same session as the historic Beguine-July 24, 1938. This Shaw panorama should convince you that, in truth, Artie Shaw at all times has had both feet in the groove.

24 - SMITH, LOUIS - SMITHVILLE - (LP)
DOXY

180 gram gatefold LP with inside pocket and 2 extra tracks.During the 1950s, trumpeter Louis Smith was a rising star in the jazz world, appearing as sideman on LPs by Kenny Burrell and Max Roach, while recording two of his own excellent albums for Blue Note in 1958. Smith was headed for a promising career in jazz when he suddenly decided to leave the hectic world of touring and recording for the more stable life of teaching at the University of Michigan. Smithville, the second of those two outstanding 1958 LPs, featured Smith playing in a quintet setting backed by pianist Sonny Clark, tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor. Kicking off the album with two of his own compositions, Smith displays his versatility with the juxtaposition of "Smithville", the albums mellow opener, and "Wetu", a note heavy uptempo number that also shows Smiths virtuosity on his instrument. Bonus tracks include "Baking" and Charlie Parkers classic "Au Privave".

TRACKLISTING: 01. Smithville 02. Wetu 03. There Will Never Be Another You 04. Embraceable You 05. Later 06. Au Privave (bonus Track) 07. Baking (bonus Track)

26 - TAYLOR, CECIL/BUELL NEIDLINGER - NEW YORK CITY R&B - (LP)
DOXY

Two nights in January, 1961, high up on West 57th St. A fantastic line-up. "I asked Buell Neidlinger about the title of the album: NEW YORK CITY R&B. "Thats what it is," he answered. "We were all based in New York City then. The session, moreover, has two blues (O.P. and THINGS AINT WHAT THEY USED TO BE) and one of the songs, CINDYS MAIN MOOD, has an l-got-rhythm set up. CELL WALK? Well, thats Cecil." (...) (...)it would be difficult, as well as pointless, to label the music on this Neidlinger/Taylor album. It is of itself, and is so strongly original that it has not dated in the least. Taylor and Neidlinger, to be sure, have gone on and beyond; but what they did on those nights in January is going to last forever. (from the original liner notes)Musicians: On O.p. And Cindys Main Mood: Cecil Taylor, Piano; Buell Neidlinger, Bass; Billy Higgins, Drums And Tympani On Cell Walk For Celeste: Cecil Taylor, Piano; Archie Shepp, Tenor Saxophone; Buell Neidlinger, Bass; Dennis Charles, Drums On Things Aint What They Used To Be: Cecil Taylor, Piano; Archie Shepp, Tenor Saxophone; Buell Neidlinger, Bass; Billy Higgins, Drums; Clark Terry, Trumpet; Roswell Rudd Trombone; Steve Lacy, Soprano Saxophone; Charles Davis, Baritone SaxophoneNumbered limited edition of 500 copies

28 - VARIOUS - HARRY SMITH'S ANTH. VOL. 1: BALLADS - (LP)
DOXY

The importance of Harry Smith's work can not be overstated. Not only did he single-handedly save much of American folk music from extinction, but when he handed his record collection over to Smithsonian folkways in 1952, he opened the floodgates for the American folk revival of the following decade. Not since John and Alan Lomax had anyone paid so much attention to saving the American folk song from extinction, but unlike the Lomaxes, Smith was not a government worker armed with a tape recorder, he was just a guy from Portland, Oregon armed with a love for music and an insatiably curious mind. So, when the U.S. Government began melting down old records to be used as shellac during WWII, Smith kicked into high gear, buying up as many old 78s from the '20s and '30s as he could find. Much of the music found here then, comes from a time before television, arm-in-arm with rock & roll, began beaming its r-culture into every household in America erasing much of what had grown up locally in each area. As can be heard so beautifully on these ballads, prior to WWII America was in many ways no more than a patchwork of territories, with local cultures and musical traditions reaching both far into the immigrant past of each area's inhabitants, but also into the future to create something wonderful and firmly rooted in the newness and adventure of life on this new continent.
