In 1960, the 22-year-old Freddie Hubbard was an up and coming young trumpet player on the New York jazz scene. Having appeared on Ornette Colemans Free Jazz, earlier that year and, by the end of 1960, having also recorded two sessions as leader for Blue Note. His first effort for the label was Open Sesame, followed just a few months later by Goin Up, an allusion to the fact that Freddies star was swiftly on the rise. Here Hubbard performs in a quintet setting, backed by Hank Mobley, McCoy Tyner, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. His own "Blues For Brenda" is presented here for the first time, as are Hank Mobleys "The Changing Scene" and "A Peck A Sec.".

Grammy Award winning jazz musician Freddie Hubbard was one of the pioneers of the trumpet, with his talentsbeing readily recognised by the likes of John Coltrane. His better performances as a soloist usually came in conjunctionwith Wayne Shorter (one of the supporting musicians on this particular album), although Freddie was amasterful musician irrespective of who he was playing with.Ready For Freddie was his fourth solo album and was originally released on Blue Note in 1962. As well as WayneShorter the album also features contributions from the likes of McCoy Tyner, Art Davis and Elvin Jones, with theoverall album one of the better hard bop recordings.

This 1962 explosive session was young lion Freddie Hubbards debut album for Impulse. For the occasion Hubbard displays a solid Post-Bop horn section with Curtis Fuller on trombone and the great John Gilmore on tenor saxophone in one of his rare appearances outside the Sun Ra Big Band. The sextet is completed by an extremely dynamic rhythm section featuring Tommy Flanagan (piano) Art Davis (Bass) and the super swinging Louis Hayes on drums.
