1 - MOONDOG - MOONDOG & HIS FRIENDS - (CD)
HALLMARK

Moondog And His Friends was originally released in 1954 on the Epic label as a 10" album and is resplendentwith the same sparse yet rhythmic percussion as is found on his various other albums. Despite the And HisFriends credit there is little mention of any of them on the original sleevenotes, save for a mention for his wifewho performs on the oo, a triangular instrument that sounded similar to a harp. There is no doubt that Moondog was considered musically different at the time he made these recordings, butmusic has eventually caught up with him, with his work being frequently sampled over the last twenty or so years. Here, however, are the originals.

5 - MOONDOG - ON THE STREETS OF NEW YORK - (LP)
MISSISSIPPI

Behold! A survey of MOONDOG's earliest recorded works-many of them unreleased until now-through a collaboration by Mississippi Records and Lucia Records. From 1954 - 1962 field recordist TONY SCHWARTZ frequently checked in with Moondog, his favorite street musician. Tony Schwartz made recordings of Moondogs earliest compositions as they were coming into focus. Sometimes these recordings were made right on the street as Moondog busked, sometimes they were made in Schwartzs studio, and sometimes they were made on NYC rooftops. The resulting recordings, many of which had never been released, were deposited at the Library Of Congress as part of the Tony Schwartz Collection in 2006 when Schwartz passed away, and this record was culled straight from these original tapes.Side one kicks off with an unreleased version of Moondogs classic composition "Why Spend The Dark Night With You?" followed by the first ever complete recording of his "Nocturne Suite," a beautiful piece of classical music performed with members of the Royal Philharmonic. The side ends with the complete "On The Streets Of New York" 7" EP, which was released on Mars records in 1955 and subsequently re-released by Honest Jons Records in 2004 on their excellent Moondog anthology. Side B features sketches of Moondog compositions never released, many with the man himself howling and chanting over his homemade percussion set.Moondogs music is as universal as it gets-part classical music, part Native American, part European folk, and part something completely unique. Moondog is one of the towering figures of 20th century music. This record comes with liner notes featuring never before released interviews with Moodog by Tony Schwartz and is housed in an old school "tip on" cover. All tracks fully licensed from the Library of Congress.

6 - MOONDOG - SNAKETIME SERIES - (LP)
WAX LOVE

Wax Love presents a reissue of Moondog's Snaketime Series, one of the earliest and rarest of Moondog's recordings, originally released in 1956. "Snaketime" is what Moondog himself referred to as his unique sense of time in music, what he called "a slithery rhythm". And indeed, almost nobody else was making music as unique as this in the 1950s, drawing influence from city sounds, and working on many of his own instrumental inventions, Snaketime Series is truly cutting edge American avant-garde.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Caribea 02. Lullaby 03. Tree Trail 04. Death, When You Come To Me 05. Big Cat 06. Frog Bog 07. To A Sea Horse 08. Dance Rehearsal 09. Surf Session, Part 1 10. Surf Session, Part 2 11. Surf Session, Part 3 12. Trees Against The Sky 13. Tap Dance 14. Oo Debut 15. Drum Suite 16. Street Scene

7 - MOONDOG - THE STORY OF MOONDOG (CV) - (LP)
4 MEN WITH BEARDS

Originally released on Prestige in 1957, this is the third LP from NYC street performer and avant garde/minimalist composer Moondog. Perhaps the least accessible of his early releases, this album is made up of percussive jams, usually on instruments of his own creation, street sounds, poetry, and Far East melodies, despite opening with a swinging number that is, oddly, the most bizarre thing on the album. Another classic from Moondog reissued with its original Andy Warhol artwork. Limited edition of 1,000 on purple and green starburst vinyl.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Up Broadway 02. Perpetual Motion 03. Gloving It 04. Improvisation 05. Ray Malone Softshoe 06. Two Quotations In Dialogue 07. 5/8 In Two Shades 08. Moondog's Theme 09. In The Doorway 10. Duet 11. Trimbas In Quarters 12. Wildwood 13. Trimbas In Eighths 14. Organ Rounds
