31 - ELECTRIC EELS - DIE ELECTRIC EELS - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Clevelands electric eels (all lower case in homage to poet e.e. cummings) is Americas quintessential proto-punk band. Formed in 1972 by singer Dave E. McManus and guitarists John Morton and Brian McMahon, the group enlisted drummer Nick Knox (later of The Cramps) and producer Paul Marotta to record a flurry of catchy and genuinely fucked-up tunes. After only five legendary live performances-complete with Dave E. in black leather jacket covered in rat-traps and playing a gas-powered lawnmower on stage-the eels broke up in 1976 and posthumously released their classic single Agitated on Rough Trade in 1978, blazing a trail for high-art, low-concept rock. As Jon Savage writes in the liner notes, "There is something heroic about the eels isolation and uncompromising attitude: a fierceness that you can hear in these songs that still resonates in a different time and world." Retrospective LP of seminal Clevland band, circa 1975. From the loud and snotty "Agitated" and its B-side "Cyclotron" (which Johan Kugelberg listed as #1 in his top 100 punk singles) to the anarchic anthem "Jaguar Ride" and the loose, bluesy sludge of "Anxiety," the album exorcises the demonic power of the Stooges and Velvets and captures the mystique of these outsider artists inventing a new language. As the eels demand "Attendance Required" on their flyer for the infamous Special Extermination Music Night, listening is absolutely mandatory for this seminal band. Recommended for fans of Dead Boys, Simply Saucer and Pagans..

32 - ELECTRIC EELS - SPIN AGE BLASTERS/BUNNIES - (7")
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Following their legendary punk-as-ever Agitated single, electric eels released their second posthumous single, Spin Age Blasters / Bunnies, on Mustard Records in 1981. Recorded in 1975 and taking the bands free-form jazz and art rock alliances to dizzying extreme, the twin-guitar swirl of "Spin Age Blasters" sounds like Trout Mask Replica on paint fumes, while "Bunnies" features Dave E.s relaxing Bob-Ross-like vocals and frantic clarinet bursts à la Roscoe Mitchell. This first-time vinyl reissue includes original cover artwork by eels guitarist John Morton and is pressed in a limited edition of 1,000 copies..

33 - FACTRIX - SCHEINTOT - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Arguably the most prescient band of the entire late 70's San Francisco underground, FACTRIX released just one 7-inch and two pioneering LP's in the early 80's. Formed in 1978 by Cole Palme (one-time member of the LAFMS group AIRWAY) and Bond Bergland (later of SAQQARA DOGS), the two initially called themselves MINIMAL MAN and performed a handful of shows along with Patrick Miller (who would go on to have a great solo career under the MM moniker). Soon they enlisted bassist Joseph T. Jacobs (BAY OF PIGS) and emerged from their Mission-district basement with their own unique take on the burgeoning English and New York post-punk scenes. The results were throbbing walls of damaged electronics, grim lyrical musings, droning bass, piercing guitar, and a modified Roland CR-78 played at 1/4 its slowest speed. FACTRIX's sole "studio" album, 1981's Scheintot, is a dark, moody, and penetrating work that grows more contemporary every year. Genuinely disturbing at times and often disorientating, it filters the influence of peers such as CABARET VOLTAIRE and DNA through the sonic and structural sensibilities of THE VELVET UNDERGROUND. An underappreciated masterpiece of the early industrial/No Wave era, Scheintot is a record that compels the listener to lift the needle from the run-out groove and listen again and again. Julian Cope describes it best: "FACTRIX's Scheintot deserves to be experienced several times, preferably in the darkness and in a state of near exhaustion (and/or informed by psychoactive chemicals)."This first time reissue comes from the original analog source. LP with gatefold insert. CD with 16-page booklet + "Empire of Passion b/w Splice of Life" single. Liner notes by Julian Cope.

35 - FACTRIX/CAZAZZA - CALIFORNIA BABYLON - (C+D)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

California Babylon is a far more sparse and caustic offering than FACTIX's debut, Scheintot, documenting their live collaboration with notorious artist MONTE CAZAZZA, who along with recording for THROBBING GRISTLE's Industrial label also coined its "Industrial Music for Industrial People" motto. Originally released on the seminal Subterranean Records in 1982, California Babylon remains one of the best collections of violent guitar and primitive machine-noise resonance ever released. Featuring a musical treatment of the Brion Gysin permutation poem, "Kick That Habit Man," with avant-garde percussionist Z'EV backing the band. This first time reissue comes from the original analog source. LP with archival inserts. CD+DVD contains bonus material of four studio tracks previously unreleased in the US, the "Prescient Dreams" single, and a feature-length movie, the so-called "Night of the Succubus" (live in San Francisco 1981), complete with special appearance by Mark Pauline from SURVIVAL RESEARCH LABS.

37 - FALL, THE - DRAGNET - (LP)    UPDATED
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Dragnet is arguably The Fall's best-known album. With the departure of Martin Bramah after Live At The Witch Trials, the band underwent yet another lineup shift in late 1979. Marc Riley switched to guitar and Steve Hanley joined on bass; the latter's signature basslines would become a major part of The Fall for the next two decades.Opening track "Psykick Dancehall" strikes like an elusive, working-class anthem with its bouncy tempo changes and Mark E. Smith's unfiltered vocals raining down on the dance-floor. "Dice Man" takes its direction from disheveled beats, stuttering lyrics and asymmetrical phrasing. Somehow Dragnet manages to be even more lo-fi than The Fall's debut, yet reveals a cohesive sound and fierce songs that would further build the band's cult following.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Psykick Dancehall 02. A Figure Walks 03. Printhead 04. Dice Man 05. Before The Moon Falls 06. Your Heart Out 07. Muzorewis Daughter 08. Flat Of Angles 09. Choc-stock 10. Spectre Vs. Rector 11. Put Away

38 - FALL, THE - GROTESQUE (AFTER THE GRAMME) - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Bursting into the 1980s on a new label (the then-upstart, now-legendary Rough Trade) and with an augmented, audibly panicked lineup, The Falls Grotesque is the true purebred Fall release from the Marc Riley era. Released in the immediate wake of The Falls most beloved single (Totally Wired), the album carries over that righteously famed teethchattering, bolstered in no small part by the drumming of new addition Paul Hanley, brother of bassist Steve Hanley and aged only 15 at the time of recording. "Pay Your Rates" negates the notion of easing into things, opening the album with pure jitter, guided by hornet-buzz guitars and Mark E. Smiths commanding shout, allowing for breath only during the brief, lumbering waltzes that appear at unexpected intervals. "New Face In Hell" is an entirely alien take on dancehall post-punk - a kazoo-driven rave-up that holds an unshakable position in the bands canon. Many significant firsts surround Grotesque, including The Falls inaugural production partnership with Mayo Thompson and the debut of Suzanne Smiths wonderful artwork, both of which would play key roles in the bands following phase. Superior Viaducts edition is the first time that Grotesque has been available on vinyl domestically since its initial release in 1980. Liner notes by Brian Turner.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Pay Your Rates 02. English Scheme 03. New Face In Hell 04. Cnc-s Mithering 05. The Container Drivers 06. Impression Of J. Temperance 07. In The Park 08. W.m.c. - Blob 59 09. Gramme Friday 10. The N.w.r.a.

39 - FALL, THE - HEX ENDUCTION HOUR - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Hex Enduction Hour was originally conceptualized as the death knell for The Fall. Beleaguered by career uncertainty and guided by vague premonitions of collapse, Mark E. Smith declared that one full hour was needed to thoroughly and perhaps finally state his case with The Fall. This framework resulted in a true classic of the post-punk era and an album that gave The Fall their first taste of album chart success, thankfully removing surrender from the equation. Recorded in haste in both Iceland and England in late 1981, the performances on Hex Enduction Hour are among the bands most urgent and distinctive. The album begins with the severe provocation of "The Classical" and the terse punk of "Jawbone And The Air-Rifle," but its "Hip Priest" that stands out as Smiths calling-card theme, a song that would become inextricable from his character (or perception thereof) in the years that followed. The elongated "And This Day" fittingly positions the band as spell-casters, closing the hour by filling every conceivable bit of space with wild, primitive percussion and whimsical electric piano. Superior Viaducts edition is the first time that Hex Enduction Hour has been available on vinyl domestically since its initial release in 1982. Liner notes by Brian Turner.

TRACKLISTING: 01. The Classical 02. Jawbone And The Air-rifle 03. Hip Priest 04. Fortress / Deer Park 05. Mere Pseud Mag. Ed. 06. Winter (hostel-maxi) 07. Winter 2 08. Just Step Sways 09. Who Makes The Nazis? 10. Iceland 11. And This Day

40 - FALL, THE - LIVE AT THE WITCH TRIALS - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

The first full-length album of The Fall, Live At The Witch Trials, is not actually a live album. Emerging out of a two-day studio session at Camden Sound in North West London during a sickly December of 1978, Witch Trials amounts to the sinister foundation of the band's diverse sound. Every song explores drastically different styles and wild terrain, leaving much to decipher over its eleven tracks."Frightened" has magnetic attraction / repulsion that shifts between Martin Bramah's skeletal guitar, Yvonne Pawlett's plastic keyboards and the lurching rhythm section of Marc Riley and Karl Burns. Mark E. Smith's mesmerizing bark and eerie lyrics warp the cosmic context with each repeated non-chorus. "Rebellious Jukebox" takes yet another turn and showcases the band's more melodic leanings. One gets the sense that The Fall are in a time-travel hallucination (from 19th century witch trials to a scathing critique of the late-70s punk scene) where the band's snot-nosed scrabble afflicts the shape of pop to come. As Smith dictates, "We are The Fall, northern white crap that talks back."

TRACKLISTING: 01. Frightened 02. Crap Rap 03. Like To Blow 04. Rebellious Jukebox 05. No Xmas For John Quays 06. Mother-sister! 07. Industrial Estate 08. Underground Medecin 09. Two Steps Back 10. Live At The Witch Trials 11. Futures And Pasts 12. Music Scene

41 - FALL, THE - ROOM TO LIVE - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

On Room To Live, The Fall take the hurried, all-or-nothing approach of their preceding Kamera Records releases to extreme ends. Forged via Mark E. Smiths continual disassembling of players and focus on previously unrehearsed material, the album collects The Falls most experimental and improvisational recordings. As proclaimed on the album cover, "Undilutable Slang Truth!" would be revealed throughout Room To Live. With the albums comparatively lo-fi production and always-teetering performances, the title track comes closest to a stab at pop (by The Falls standards), built on fantastically bent saloon swaying under one of Smiths by-now characteristic dressing-downs of square life. "Detective Instinct" is an unshakeable creeper, as languid and ominous as the band would get during the Marc Riley years. "Marquis Cha Cha" is a post-punk rhumba, beginning with fury and then easing into something only The Fall could conjure. Superior Viaducts edition is the first time that Room To Live has been available on vinyl domestically since its initial release in 1982. Liner notes by Brian Turner.

42 - FALL, THE - ROUGH TRADE SINGLES - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

The Rough Trade Singles collects The Falls four singles recorded for this influential label in 1980 and 1983 - How I Wrote Elastic Man / City Hobgoblins, Totally Wired / Putta Block, The Man Whose Head Expanded / Ludd Gang and Kicker Conspiracy - none of which appeared on any of the bands studio LPs. With 7-inches being the eras vehicle for buzzing communiqus, The Fall would use the format for short-form, standalone works rather than as mere promotional devices for forthcoming albums. "Totally Wired" is often cited (and rightfully so) as The Falls most infectious tune - an amphetamine-fueled anthem with stuttering nods to forebears, yet too incisive to have been made by anyone else. "How I Wrote Elastic Man" is another mad hoedown, one reimagined for the post-punk age. While the playful rhythm machine on "The Man Whose Head Expanded" almost suggests danceability, Mark E. Smiths idiosyncratic shriek on "Kicker Conspiracy" pierces through the twin drumming of Paul Hanley and Karl Burns and the groups unpredictable / unmistakable racket. Together these songs remain some of the absolute best material The Fall would ever release. Superior Viaducts edition is the first time that The Rough Trade Singles has been available on vinyl domestically. 44 - FAUST - THE FAUST TAPES - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Faust stand among the most influential creative forces to have emerged from Germany in the late '60s and early '70s. Along with Can, Agitation Free, Neu! and others, they rejected the Anglo-American norms of rock 'n' roll to start a back-to-basics and uniquely Teutonic revolution in sound - later dubbed by the UK press with the semi-derogatory term "krautrock." They would reach near-mythical status through a series of classic albums recorded between 1970 and 1973 at their secluded W studio. As Dave Segal writes in the liner notes, "There's no consensus about which Faust album represents their zenith. But a survey of the group's fans would likely find the collage-heavy messterpiece The Faust Tapes triumphing. Its freewheeling, jump-cut nature and unlikely earworm moments conspire for more what-the-fuck epiphanies per minute than just about any other record about which Krautrocksampler author Julian Cope has raved."Comprised of twenty odd tape-manipulation experiments and freak-out jams, The Faust Tapes stashes away some of the band's best-known songs. "Flashback Caruso," with its delicate acoustic guitar and Rudolf Sosna's airy vocals, could easily have appeared on So Far or Faust IV, while on "J'ai Mal Aux Dents," Jean-Herv Peron's playful lyrics and this ecstatic, era-defining riff perfectly represent Faust's magical mischievousness. This first-time domestic release of The Faust Tapes on vinyl reproduces the original sleeve design, featuring artwork by Bridget Riley.

45 - FLESH EATERS, THE - A MINUTE TO PRAY A SECOND TO DIE - (CD)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

The Flesh Eaters is the name behind one Chris Desjardins a.k.a. Chris D. Taking his stage name from a 1964 cult film, Chris D. wrote for legendary fanzine Slash in the late 70s and assembled the first of many Flesh Eaters lineups from heavyweights in the burgeoning L.A. punk scene. After releasing a ravenous EP and heart-ripping debut album, The Flesh Eaters unleashed their era-defining statement, A Minute to Pray A Second to Die. Originally released in 1981, A Minute to Pray brings together the greatest band in American rock history: Dave Alvin (Blasters) on guitar, John Doe (X) on bass, Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) on sax, along with Bill Batemen (Blasters) and DJ Bonebrake (X) providing the albums trademark percussive backbone. Chris D. leads the group like a man possessed. Through a series of grotesque vignettes, his lyrical prowess and indelible growl stand toe-to-toe with the musics powerful shifts. From opener "Digging My Grave" (resembling a diesel-charged Magic Band) to the gothic groove of "Divine Horsemen," each song is its own hairy beast. Inspired by African tribal music, 60s garage-rock churn and Funhouse-era Stooges swing, A Minute to Pray remains (according to author / archivist Byron Coley) "the best rock record ever recorded." This first-time vinyl reissue and long out-of-print CD release has been carefully remastered and features liner notes by Coley. Without a doubt, The Flesh Eaters will hypnotize a new flock of listeners in this millennium..

47 - FLESH EATERS, THE - FOREVER CAME TODAY - (CD)

In the wake of the star-filled A Minute To Pray A Second To Die, The Flesh Eaters frontman Chris D. assembled a leaner, meaner band to deliver his next unbound vision. Forever Came Today, the groups third full-length album, was originally released on Ruby Records in 1982 and features Don Kirk on guitar, Robyn Jameson on bass, Chris Wahl on drums, Steve Berlin on sax and Chris D.s unmistakable voice. "My Life To Live" and "Shallow Water" are masterfully wrought punk tunes, reverberating with heart-wrenching vocals that turn on a dime from desperate whispers to blood-curdling screams. "Drag My Name In Mud" dives deeper into full-throttle rock demonology, bluesy primeval swagger and obsessive imagery, inspired in equal parts by William S. Burroughs and Edgar Allan Poe. This first-time reissue has been carefully remastered and comes with lyric sheet. 49 - FLIPPER - LOVE CANAL - (7")
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Flipper formed in San Francisco in 1979 on the cusp of Ronald Reagan's presidency. It seems fitting that their debut single (originally released on Subterranean in 1981) turns environmental disaster into the band's modus operandi. Chorus-less and catchy-as-hell, "Love Canal" features all that would become Flipper trademarks in four art-damaged minutes: knuckle-dragging tempo, ear-splitting feedback, basslines to crash your car to and a depraved frontman wailing about uncomfortable American matters. "Ha Ha Ha" is even more direct in its intent, mocking suburbia with a flat, almost psychotic laugh. This reissue comes with original sleeve design. Limited edition red vinyl.

50 - FLYNT, HENRY - GRADUATION - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Henry Flynt took a high-brow approach to so-called low-brow music. Combining sounds from his native North Carolina with an avant-garde sensibility honed in New York Citys loft scene in the 1960s, Flynt created what he describes as "new American ethnic music." As a student of Hindustani singer Pandit Pran Nath alongside La Monte Young and Terry Riley, an associate of the Fluxus movement, and even a live collaborator with the Velvet Underground, Flynt was a part of one of the 20th centurys richest art and music milieus. Graduation, recorded between 1975 and 1979, was meant to be the debut of his avant-garde hillbilly music. The albums title track is a slow, twisted ballad that unfolds like a funeral dream over dirge-like country riffs. "Celestial Power," the albums 20-minute closing track, is an entrancing minimalist composition performed strictly with oscillating vibrato guitar. As Flynt explains, "I aspire to a beauty which is ecstatic and perpetual, while at the same time being concretely human and emotionally profound." Shelved upon its completion in 1980, Graduation was not released until after the turn of the century. In 2013, it still sounds years ahead of its time..

51 - FONTAINE, BRIGITTE - BRIGITTE FONTAINE - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Never one to settle on a single musical style, Brigitte Fontaine followed up her debut, Est.Folle, and her astonishing collaboration with The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Comme à la Radio, with the most eclectic release of her lengthy career, 1972s Brigitte Fontaine. It is telling that Fontaine chose an eponymous title for her third album, the sole release from her venerable 70s catalogue attributed to her alone. Here the actress-cum-singer has finally arrived. From the introspective opening track, simply named "Brigitte," seductive melodies perfectly hang above slithery bass lines and acoustic strumming. On "Moi Aussi," a sparse and trance-like duet with long-time collaborator Areski, Fontaine muses, "They put me in a cage and after they told me You fly down." Brigitte Fontaine is an unmatched European art-pop masterpiece anchored by both vocal and lyrical dexterity-in many ways, Fontaines most compelling work and an excellent entry point for those unfamiliar with this unique French icon..

52 - FONTAINE, BRIGITTE - BRIGITTE FONTAINE EST... FOLLE - (CD)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

French poet and chameleonic vocalist Brigitte Fontaines career spans over four decades. Only a few years before her 1968 debut, Brigitte Fontaine Est.Folle, she moved to Paris to become an actress and took her prodigiously mature voice into the studio. Rich in the drama she brought to theater, Fontaine synthesized chanson (French pop song) and world music, which eventually won her international acclaim as a performer and collaborator with a variety of artists from around the world (Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sonic Youth and Stereolab, to name just a few). On Est.Folle, Fontaine takes flight over conductor Jean Claude Vanniers brilliant arrangements. Vannier, best known for his work on Serge Gainsbourgs Histoire De Melody Nelson, is in fine form, using what would become his trademark stylings: lush strings, taut rhythms culled from across the globe and a healthy dose of whimsy. "Il Pleut" swings from understatement to rapturous delight. "Une Fois Mais Pas Deux" is an infectious pop song that could have been culled from a French New Wave soundtrack. Fontaine is adventurous and multi-dimensional with sophisticated lyrics, poignant melodies and enthralling delivery. Such artful handling of meter and rhyme (or lack thereof) is rare in pop song. Far from the eras y-y phenomenon, but never fully removed from its traditions, Est...Folle is an essential link in French pop music, exuberantly pushing the genre into more conceptual and experimental sounds..

54 - FONTAINE, BRIGITTE - COMME A LA RADIO - (CD)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Featuring Areski Belkacem and Art Ensemble of Chicago, Comme à la Radio is the sophomore album in Brigitte Fontaines prolific career. While her debut, Brigitte Fontaine Est...Folle, is a unique take on French chanson, here the Art Ensemble provides the perfect setting for Fontaines exploration of free-verse poetry. Often arrhythmic and spoken, her vocals command the same spontaneity and grace that her collaborators applied to their instruments. The albums eight-minute title track sets the tone: a sparse bass line keeps time as Fontaine dances around stabs of flute and trumpet. On "Tanka II," named for a form of concise Japanese poetry, Areski (who provides percussion throughout) plays hand-drums atop flurries of bass as Fontaine coos and whispers pensively, gradually uttering controversial phrases. "Lt Lt" centers around a repeated motif with individual lines of high-pitched melody on a bed of muted horns. Each track is its own world, with Fontaines incredible range, both in style and substance, acting as the glue between the immense talent involved. The overall effect is chilling, and it is no surprise that Comme à la Radio is often cited as Fontaines best known work..

56 - FULLMAN, ELLEN - THE LONG STRING INSTRUMENT - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Ellen Fullman began developing her installation The Long String Instrument in 1981, in search of tonalities that could not be achieved with traditional instruments. This large-scale work consists of 70-foot-long metallic wires, anchored by a wooden resonator, across which the performer moves backwards and forwards with rosin-covered fingers. The overall effect has been rightfully compared to the experience of standing inside an enormous grand piano. Recorded during Fullmans 1985 residency at Het Apollohuis in Eindhoven, Holland, The Long String Instrument album is the first document of her acoustic explorations. "Woven Processional," which features Fullman alongside artist Arnold Dreyblatt, conjures an enchanting drone from the elongated strings and dissolves into organ-like overtones and otherworldly textures. Several tracks bring to life another Fullman invention, The Water Drip Drum, constructed from water dripping into an amplified aluminum pan and manipulated by foot pedal. Thirty years since its initial release, Ellen Fullmans debut LP remains a major contribution to the histories of sound sculpture and minimalist composition. This first-time reissue is mastered from the original analog tapes and recommended for fans of Pauline Oliveros, Charlemagne Palestine and Harry Bertoia..

57 - GERMAN SHEPHERDS - MUSIC FOR SICK QUEERS (+7") - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Formed by Stephen Scheatzle and Sandy Stark (a.k.a. Mark Hutchinson), German Shepherds grew out of San Franciscos art-punk scene in the early 80s. Their first single, "I Adore You," is a lost minimal synth nugget with an unforgettable rhythm box pattern, and their second, "THC," showcases Starks menacing and child-like vocals. Music for Sick Queers (originally released in 1985) brings together these and more beautifully disturbing songs with electronic noise reminiscent of Allen Ravenstine (Pere Ubu) and the best of The Residents, Suicide and Psychic TV. While more tracks would appear on compilations, such as Mykel Boards infamous The "Youll Hate This Record" Record, German Shepherds themselves virtually disappeared as their self-released album went out-of-print for decades. After years of searching the catacombs, Superior Viaduct finally caught up with only surviving member, Stark, and uncovered the bands secret history growing up in Ohio. This first-time reissue comes from the original master tapes and features a special bonus 7-inch containing previously unreleased material plus archival inserts and a digital download card. "A masterpiece of minimal synth combined with experimental and noisy synth punkish elements!" -Mutant Sound.

58 - GIBSON, JON - TWO SOLO PIECES - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

For his second album, Two Solo Pieces, Jon Gibson forgoes the dense, multi-layered timbres of Visitations in favor of simple textures and tone. While Two Solo Pieces serves up further evidence of Gibson's centrality to American minimalism - witness its inclusion in Alan Licht's famed Minimal Top Ten list - this profoundly intimate record also reveals the beauty of enclosed spaces and infinite harmonic vistas. As its unadorned title suggests, Two Solo Pieces consists of a pair of side-long tracks featuring the composer alone. While "Cycles," an iridescent improvisation on organ, achieves a downright eerie sense of expansiveness, Gibson's captivating alto flute on "Untitled" draws the listener inside the instrument itself. The photo on the album's back cover - a seated Gibson surrounded by cascading rows of organ pipes and the vaulted ceiling in Manhattan's Peace Church - offers a striking visual complement to these gorgeous recordings. Originally released in 1977 on Philip Glass' Chatham Square imprint, this first-time vinyl reissue is recommended for fans of Anthony Moore, Roberto Cacciapaglia and Terry Riley.

59 - GIBSON, JON - VISITATIONS - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

Since the mid-1960s, Jon Gibson has played a key role in the development of American avant-garde music. No other artist has performed in the world premieres of Terry Rileys "In C," Steve Reichs "Drumming," and Philip Glass "Einstein on the Beach," three major works that changed the course of musical history. While his expertise on woodwind instruments made Gibson a go-to collaborator in Reichs, Glass, and La Monte Youngs ensembles, less known are his remarkable contributions as a composer and visual artist. Visitations, Gibsons first release under his own name, originally appeared on the Chatham Square imprint in 1973. Inspired by the books of Carlos Castaneda, Gibson departs from the structured repetition of his minimalist peers and takes the listener on an aural journey-spanning organic field recordings, ambient flutes and synthesizers, and free-flowing textures. Visitations two side-long tracks are at once solemn and unsettling, making this an astonishing debut that firmly establishes Gibson as a pioneer in his own right. This first-time vinyl reissue is recommended for fans of Cluster, Harold Budd and Phill Niblock..

60 - GILBERT, B.C/G. LEWIS - 3R4 - (LP)
SUPERIOR VIADUCT

In 1980, after three relentlessly creative albums, the members of Wire were at an impasse, unsure of how to push themselves any further as a four-piece rock band. While frontman Colin Newman spent the bands hiatus mining Wires knack for intelligent and contorted pop songs, guitarist Bruce Gilbert and bassist / vocalist Graham Lewis joined forces for a series of experimental projects (Dome, Cupol, etc.) where the primary motivating concept was "studio as instrument." 3R4, the duos only LP under the B.C. Gilbert/G. Lewis moniker and the very second album to be released on 4AD, eschews melody and structure in favor of ambient-noise soundscapes, metallic textures and tense moods. If the brief "Barge Calm" tracks appear like sonic exercises, the longer pieces ("3. 4." and "R") are true exorcisms, conjuring supernatural found-sounds with the patience and deliberation of (un)holy men. Play this record loud and try not to think that it is the soundtrack to a lost David Lynch film. This first-time vinyl reissue is recommended for fans of Faust, David Cunningham, and Thomas Leer & Robert Rentals The Bridge..
