1714 - VARIOUS - ROCKABILLY TUNES - (LP)
CHARLY

The bulk of the recordings on this compilation were not originally released by Sun Records during its existence and several first appeared on this album. Ken Cook's duet with Roy Orbison was originally issued on Phillips International in 1958 credited to Ken Cook. Thinkin' Tonight Of My Blue Eyes saw it's first release on this album, as did Ray Harris' Love Dumb Baby. The only song recorded on Sun containing the word "Rockabilly" was Hayden Thompson's Rockabilly Gal. Andy Anderson's Johnny Valentine and Tough, Tough, Tough saw their first release on this album and have since become iconic Sun recordings. Jimmy Wages did not have any of his Sun recordings issued until 1975. Heartbreakin' Love and Take Me were previously unissued, but their popularity was sufficient to bring Wages over to Britain to appear live. Tommy Ruick was another who never saw a release on Sun Records and his three sides on this album represent 75% of his Sun recordings. Narvel Felts, in common with a number of Sun artists, made the big time after leaving Sun, in his case in 1973. His recordings for the Memphis label remained unissued for some 20 odd years. Vintage photos of the artists and Ding Dong's detailed sleeve notes adorn the album.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Roy Orbison - I Was A Fool 02. H. Thompson/s. Rhodes - Rockabilly Gal 03. Andy Anderson - Johnny Valentine 04. Andy Anderson - Tough Tough Tough 05. Ray Harris - Love Dumb Baby 06. Jimmy Wages - Heartbreakin' Love 07. Jimmy Wages - Take Me 08. Ken Cook - Thinkin, Tonite Of My Blue Eyes 09. Tommy Ruick - Don't Come Crying 10. Tommy Ruick - Prisoner Of The Blues 11. Tommy Ruick - Let 'em Know 12. Narvel Felts - Lonely River 13. Narvel Felts - Foolish Thoughts 14. Narvel Felts - Lonesome Feeling

1715 - VARIOUS - ROCKET GIRL 20 (BOOK/7"/FLEXI/CD) - (BCD)
ROCKET GIRL

There are still precious few women at the helm of record labels, let alone Indian women, but Vinita stands out as a proud anomaly. a champion of the underdog, an underdog herself, a surrogate mother to unsung musicians, a relentless workerbee, a fan, a carer, a catalyst. (Richard Milward, from the Rocket Girl 20 book)2018 marked the 20th anniversary of Rocket Girl, one of the most eclectic and resilient small independent labels in the UK, steered single-handedly by Vinita Joshi. To celebrate this milestone, in March 2019 Rocket Girl will release a very special collection of music and literature, comprising a 16-track CD compilation of Vinitas artists past and present, a collectable 7" and flexi disc, exclusive Anthony Ausgang print, full 20 track download, plus a strikingly illustrated 70-page hardback book uncovering the history of the label.Based on extensive interviews with Vinita, with contributions from many of her bands (Fis an Astronaut, Coldharbourstores, Pieter Nooten), the books text is written by Faber author and long-time Rocket Girl supporter Richard Milward. Beginning with Vinitas formative years in Rugby in the 1970s and 1980s, the story covers not only the eventful history of Rocket Girl but also Vinitas teenage initiation into the music industry: managing The Telescopes, founding Ch with Nick Allport out of the ashes of Cheree, before finally going it alone and setting up her own label in 1998. It is both an inspiring and bittersweet tale. Vinitas staying power alone in such a challenging industry is worthy of its own tribute: she has built a record label on her own terms from scratch, she has overcome the loss of loved ones, survived a breakdown at the height of her labels popularity, and all in all her immense love of music, her strength and positivity in the face of adversity blazes throughout the book. Along the way we learn of the hits (and why Kurt Heasleys vocal cords seemed to be malfunctioning during the Lilys Top of the Pops appearance), the near-misses (including a never-before-seen letter from Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers), the triumph of Vinitas first self-released LP A Tribute to Spacemen 3, her heartbreak losing Jason DiEmilio of The Azusa Plane in 2006, plus sad revelations concerning Television Personalities Daniel Treacys condition following his brain trauma in 2011.Regular Rocket Girl designer Xiaofei Zhang has been given access to Vinitas vast collection of personal photographs, letters, flyers, press clippings and other keepsakes, arranging these alongside the text to give the book the feel of a technicolour scrapbook, a vivid chronicle of indie music past, present and future. As Milward writes: The artists Vinita has worked with over the years are undisputed luminaries of alternative music, and stand up to any major indie labels roster: Spacemen 3, The Telescopes, Bark Psychosis, Disco Inferno, Lilys, Low, Bardo Pond, Mogwai, Cocteau Twins Robin Guthrie, My Bloody Valentines Kevin Shields, Patti Smith, Jonathan Richman, Television Personalities, to name just a handful. Likewise, the artists featured on the accompanying CD compilation reveal just how far-ranging Vinitas taste is, and how loyal her bands have been to her over the years. The disc opens with a special Rocket mix of Silver Apples Susie - the band that adorned the A-side of rgirl1, the labels first 7". From here, there are cuts from Rocket Girl stalwarts like Fand Bell Gardens, as well as tracks contributed by friends and supporters of the label, such as Andrew Weatherall and Mogwai. Arguably the most notable track (certainly the most poignant) is the Television Personalities All Coming Back, one of just a few unreleased songs recorded before Treacys accident, and released here with Daniels sisters blessing.Vinita began her career selling Loop/Telescopes flexi discs on New Years Eve 1988 and, in homage to this bygone format, she has included a 7" flexi (featuring Fight For Work, an outtake from Mogwais most recent LP, Every Countrys Sun) as well as a standard 7" bringing together rare tracks from two Philadelphia bands she has championed since their formation: Bardo Pond and The Azusa Plane. The three discs are housed in pockets found in the books inside covers, and there are yet more gifts: an exclusive print by Anthony Ausgang (the instantly recognisable artist behind MGMTs Congratulations and FElectric Sound of Summer covers), plus a free download code for all tracks featured across the various formats of the collection.Vinitas story is anything but ordinary, and this extraordinary collection is the most fitting tribute to the labels legacy so far: a treasure trove of rare tracks and unheard stories for Rocket Girl devotees, a comprehensive introduction to the label for the uninitiated, and both an inspirational chronicle and cautionary tale for anybody interested in the history of British independent music in the past thirty years.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Silver Apples Susie (rocket Mix) 02. Mogwai Fight For Work 03. Bardo Pond Out Of Nowhere 04. Kirk Lake Go Ask Adorno 05. Azusa Plane Pop World 06. P.s I Love You The Sun, The Sea, And The Song 07. Coldharbourstores Seven Minutes 08. July Skies Swallows And Swifts Ii 09. Fuxa Sun Is Shining (congo Hammer Remix) 10. God Is An Astronaut Reverse World (quiet) 11. A Place To Bury Strangers A Million Tears 12. Robin Guthrie Flicker 13. Television Personalities All Coming Back 14. Pieter Nooten I Want You 15. Anthony Reynolds Losers Like Us Take The Bus 16. Jon Derosa Golden Dawn 17. Bell Gardens Might Be You 18. White Ring Heavy 19. Andrew Weatherall Cosmonautrix 20. Transient Waves D Jam

1728 - VARIOUS - ROCKSTEADY TAKING OVER ORANGE STREET - (CD)
KINGSTON SOUNDS

Rocksteady took over Orange Street ,Kingston, Jamaica around 1966,the same time that an extreme heat wave hit the Jamaican Island. Some say the previous jerky Ska Rhythms proved too strenuous of an activity to partake in during the all night Sound Systems. So it proved a winning formula to slow the beat down to a more leisurely pace.Whatever the reasons were this two year period that ran until 1968 would see some of the power escape from the big three producers,Clement Coxonne Dodd,Prince Buster and Duke Reid...who up to that period ruled the airwaves. It was time to make room for a new wave of up and coming producers that also had something to offer the people. So sit back and enjoy some Rocksteady straight from the dances of Jamaica...Hope you enjoy the set...............

1734 - VARIOUS - ROOTS OF SALSA, VOL. 1 - (L+C)
GROSSO!

Pablo Yglesias -aka DJ Bongohead- compiles to Grosso Recordings an amazing serie with classics tunes from Caribbean music that became great successes of "Salsa"."This series is born of my investigations into the music I love, digging deep into the Afro-Antillean songbook from the golden period of Latin music to unearth older - sometimes definitive or at the very least early hit renditions - of tunes that would later be covered by the next succeeding waves of salseros. That is not to say these are the first recorded versions (though some are); indeed, there is a whole other even earlier epoch of recordings, from the 1920s and 30s, which also served as fodder for future generations of Latin musicians.""The mission with this series is to choose recordings from the 1940s and 50s that not only were influential in the 1970s but also have good to excellent recording fidelity and could be an aid not only in advancing peoples understanding of the origins of salsa but also serve as a DJ tool to show that there was an earlier version of a hit that the casual salsa fan may not know about. These treasures, some now forgotten and obscure, others still played in some melmano (salsa fan) circles, are representative of the earlier era of compositions and performances that would serve to inspire and shape the movement that would become a transnational symbol of Latinidad from the 1960s through the 1980s, before the next generation created their own vernacular styles for dancing and expressing their identity anew."

1736 - VARIOUS - ROOTS OF SALSA, VOL. 3 - (L+C)
GROSSO!

This is the third in our compilation series on the roots of salsa. For a general background on the ideas behind it, please refer to the notes in the first and second volumes. In a nutshell the Roots of Salsa series is an investigation into early Cuban or Cuban-derived tunes that were either covered by salsa groups later (mid-1960s through today) or were highly influential on the development of salsa over the decades. The main criterion was to pick tracks that sounded adequate for todays DJ or collectors to play at a gig or on the radio, or were sufficiently interesting (or enough of a surprise to fans of the later version) to merit inclusion, but were notperhaps the best known or of more recent vintage.Pablo E. Yglesias, aka DJBongohead

1737 - VARIOUS - ROOTS OF THE ROLLING STONES - (CD)
GREAT AMERICAN

One of the most successful groups of all time, THE ROLLING STONES started out as a blues cover band in 1962, and the blues and early rock 'n' roll have always underpinned their long career. The artists included in this collection were always the touchstone for many Stones classics and this 16-track collection dips into some of the band's obvious influences as well as some of their most famous covers. These songs are the template for the band that the Stones became, so in that sense this set isn't exactly revelatory, but hearing these original versions underscores just how strongly the Stones absorbed, expanded, and relied on the blues every step of the way.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Bo Diddley: Who Do You Love? 02. Irma Thomas: Time Is On My Side 03. Rufus Thomas: Walkin The Dog 04. Jimmy Reed: Bright Lights, Big City 05. Mississippi Fred Mcdowell: You Gotta Move 06. Rev. 1740 - VARIOUS - RUDE BOY SCORCHERS - (CD)
KINGSTON SOUNDS

The Rude Boy moniker has its roots firmly set in the downtown districts of Kingston, Jamaica. Alongside the regular Ska/Rocksteady sounds coming out of the sound systems, there was an undercurrent theme to some songs that spoke of the struggles of the youth, of their confrontation, arrests and run ins with the establishment. Some of these songs praised the Rude Boys for their stance and style while other songs were more in contempt with the Rude Boys attitiudes, comings ,goings and violent behaviour. For this release we have put together a set of tunes that the Jamaican Rude Boys would have been listening to at the sound systems on the lawns and street corners. Not only the more obvious Rude Boy tunes like Gunmen Coming to Town , Dreader than Dread, Moon Hop but also some of the tunes that made the sound systems rock well into the night.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Fat Man - Derrick Morgan 02. Wine And Grine - Lloydie & The Lovebites 03. Love Is All I Have - Phyllis Wilson 04. Put Yourself In My Place - Delroy Wilsom 05. Rainbow Into Rio Mino - Rico Rodriguez 06. I Love You - Derrick Morgan 07. Dreader Than Dread - Honey Boy Martin 08. Gunmen Coming To Town - The Heptones 09. Rub Up, Push Up - Justin Hinds 10. Soul Voyage - Lester Sterling 11. Moon Hop - Derrick Morgan 12. Fat Girl, sexy Girl - John Holt 13. Reggae Hit The Town - The Ethiopians 14. How Long - Pat Kelly 15. Reggae In The Wind - Lester Sterling* 16. Derrick To-the-pop - Derrick Morgan* 17. Joe Razor - Roy Shirley* 18. On Broadway - Slim Smith*
