1351 - PLUNT - PLUNT - (CD)
BONGO BEAT

Plunt are part of the current Montreal indie rock explosion. Simple, short and savvy, Plunts debut CD contains 16 songs that clock in at just over 32 minutes. While it fuses a whole range of influences including late 70s NYC punk and 90s indie-rock, the band also lyrically explores neighborhood living, having sex, living with cats & dogs, having more sex, real estate agents, and food, which are all without a doubt, classicsongwriting subjects. "Velvet Underground grooves crash into 80s euro pop and alt country guitars! It is noisy and sweet with girl group vocals plus the return of Kevin Komoda (Rational Youth, Pest 5000)." - Ralph Alfonso, Bongobeat.com

1352 - PLURALS - BUGENES MELISSAE - (LP)
OAKEN PALACE

Plurals are a regularly gigging band based in Brighton and London, have toured extensively withgenre heavyweights Aidan Baker/Nadja and in 2013 released the collaborative album "Glass CrocodileMedicine" with Aidan as part of Southern Records Latitudes series. In a release history that treads intodrone, ambient, avant garde, noise and psychedelic worlds on disc and vinyl, Bugenes Melissae istheir twelfth outing and their most mature and captivating release to date. Two lush, organic drones slowly unfold and take the listener on a journey through nature as well asurban and industrial environments, painted through restrained use of electric guitars, synth, voice, clarinet, field recordings and other elements. Melodic and soothing tunes are contrasted with elementsof noise, creating a tension that grabs ones attention up to the very last second. Bugenes Melissaegoes right back to the very roots of drone, without ever sounding out-of-date.Plurals dedicate this album to bees and bumblebees, two species that are critically endangered in theUK due to changes in agriculture that have destroyed almost 97% of the countrys untouchedgrasslands since the 1930s. All profits will be donated to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.Bugenes Melissa is limited to 500 copies on transparent orange vinyl, housed in 100% recycledsleeves with completely hand-drawn artwork by Disa Wallander and the band itself.

1354 - PLUS INSTRUMENTS - TRANCESONICS - (CD)
BLOWPIPE

Last year saw a small revival of Ultra - the Dutch version of post-punk (in 2 words). You'd better browse back to Vital Weekly 822 and read more. It brought back a lot of happy memories and old musicians, but it seems that the one artist who benefitted most was Truus de Groot. Once a member of Nasmak, then Plus Instruments (in a first incarnation with Lee Ranaldo and David Linton). Just before the revival started she released a great CD 'Dance With Me', of all new songs, which showed she still had the same great charm as she had thirty years ago. It brought her a retrospective album on Vinyl On Demand (which sadly didn't make it to these pages) and concerts in The Netherlands and France. Plus of course new work, and here's another album of twelve new songs. 'Dance With Me' was great, but this new one is even better. More coherent altogether, variations on what Truus does. And what's that, you may ask? Truus de Groot plays her crackle box, synthesizers, rhythm machines and sings. She does that with great style. The music is pretty much straight forward, sequenced rhythms, to which she bends her voice to sing songs. Not moan, howl, whisper, but actually singing great songs. Her crackle box functions as machine to create weird songs that float around her strict beats. Music that reminds you of DAF at their peak, but less macho, more feminine and, perhaps, listening to sweat ditty as 'Magic Carpet', also a bit more hippy like. That whole thing makes this something which is something that surely some people will like, who found DAF a bit too pathetic, too German. It still sounds like 1982, but then updated and way more poppy. 'Detour Square Dance' is her version of 'Der Mussolini' and should be an underground dance classic. Excellent!

TRACKLISTING: 01. To Do 02. Its Complicated 03. Into Oblivion 04. Love Is Enough 05. Obsolete 06. Magic Carpet 07. Detour Square Dance 08. Snake Charmer 09. You Make Me Stomp 10. When The Rain Comes 11. In My Dreams

1356 - PLUSH - FED - (LP)
BE WITH

Originally released in Japan only on CD in 2002, Plush's Fed lives up to the cult-like adulation it has garnered ever since. A stunning symphony of Bacharach-inspired pop, Toussaint-swing andMelody Nelson-era-Gainsbourg, its an album bound together by Liam Hayes' maverick genius, an uncompromising Brian Wilson-esque quest for sonic perfection. Positively indulgent in every way, this sumptuous record has long deserved to be treated to a deluxe vinyl edition. Lovingly overseen by Hayes and recent collaborator Pat Sansone (Wilco/The Autumn Defense), it will finally be available on the format it shouldve always been, this Record Store Day 2018. Remastered and presented as a double LP - cut specially at 45rpm - it comes housed in a beautiful gatefold jacket with expanded artwork throughout. Its expansive, singular vision infamously took years to realise, involving Earth Wind & Fires horn arranger (the legendary Tom Tom MMLXXXIV) amongst other elite personnel. Recorded with five different engineers (including Steve Albini and John McEntire), Hayes meticulously extracted every ounce of pop from each note. A long list of renowned studio ringers (including soul drummer Morris Jennings) and Chicago regulars (McEntire, Rizzo, Parker) among many others provide playing of demonstrably professional precision. As such, Hayes' complex, meandering melodies are rendered far more coherent and satisfying than they otherwise might have appeared, bringing his epic, anguished pop to a rarely seen level of perfection and depth. This unstinting dedication to the overarching vision was rewarded handsomely - artistically, at least. However, as might have been expected, his deluxe approach resulted in a bill too steep for any American or European label to ultimately support. It has since seemed unlikely that it would see the light of day on either side of the Atlantic. Yet we were determined not to allow Hayes' lifetime achievement to go unnoticed or let music fans across the world miss out on one of the finest albums of this century.A wide-eyed opus of stunning intensity, Fed oozes Hayes impeccable influences without ever becoming overwhelmed by them. Incredibly, it touches upon Blaxploitation soul, Boz Scaggs-soft-rock, hints of jazz and blues, timeless baroque and skewed pop. In one long minute, the stabbing, soulful ""So Blind"" moves through five different melodic segments, horns shift easily from haunting backdrop to explosive forefront, smoothly giving way to strings as Hayes' voice casts its bewitching spell. The ambitious soul of "Having It All" has been described as the diffident cousin of Marvin Gayes "Save The Children" whilst the breezy ""Greyhound Bus Station"" is pure 70s AM Gold, evoking the easy warmth of Jimmy Webbs beloved Lands End period. The sublime resignation of ""No Education"", a beautifully slow number that begins, ""Never read a book in my life/ But I feel just fine"" is post-rock ballad heaven. Arriving towards the end, the title track arrives as a majestic suite, moving from a horn-and-guitar-led instrumental via shifting melodies to Hayes compelling vocal bursts.   An album of such brilliance, Fed can comfortably sit alongside such staggering statement pieces as David Bowie's Young Americans, Randy Newman's 12 Songs or Harry Nilsson's Nilsson Schmilsson. Indeed, for all the sprawling elements that went in - lengthy guitar builds, exploding horn sections, solemn strings, female backup chorus - it is a deeply personal and original record. Employing a distinct "more is more" aesthetic, he demonstrates remarkable restraint in producing an album of such intimacy. ""My creation has drowned me,"" he memorably sings on languid opener ""Whose Blues"", yet he navigates the shifting styles and ideas with enviable ease.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Whose Blues 02. I've Changed My Number 03. Blown Away 04. So Blind, Greyhound Bus Station 05. No Education 06. Sound Of San Francisco 07. Born Together 08. Unis 0:26 09. Whose Blues Anyway 10. What'll We Do? 11. Having It All 12. Fed,the Woods

1362 - PN - THROUGH SATIN VEILS GROPE - (CD)
FUNTIME

Three years after their debut EP The Art Of Being We, Belgium's PN finally releases their first full-length CD. Again their music is very hard to classify, but the band offers some help by calling it post emo hardcore. And I think that this will give you a general idea what PN is all about. The album can be divided into three parts. The first two songs Givin' Up On Routine and Circle Of Promises are two diverse tracks that often change from melodic parts to angry eruptions full of bad emotions. The next three songs are much smoother with no angry passages. They are quite slow, but never become boring because of the song writing's depth. The vocals are soft and hypnotic, with parallels to Radiohead and Tool. The bass shows that PN also have some jazz influences. Frozen Intentions is the most epic track on the album, but never gets too complicated to follow. Out Of Balance has a nice melody and could be used as a single outtake. Leaning Up Is Taking All Of You is the albums darkest track and suitable for metal heads. It's followed by Kill Minus 9, an instrumental but weird track with some free jazz ideas. The last two tracks are again two songs which follow the path of the two first ones.PN have been able to keep the high level from the debut EP which doesn't surprise me too much because this band has been together since 1992 and surely knows what to do. There are no clichs on the record and fans from Tool, Thursday and Poison The Well will find enough convincing arguments to get this album.

1378 - POHGOH - SECRET CLUB - (CD)
NEW GRANADA

POHGOH's best-known song might be "Friend X," a wordy, rough-hewn guitar anthem that's hinged on a series of well-timed climactic bursts and Susie Ulrey's angsty vocal. Like a lot of the songs in the Florida band's short-but-killer catalog, "Friend X" is a dynamically playful and DIY-feeling fusion of emo, alternative rock, and power pop. It was the first song on their post-breakup album, 1998's In Memory of Bab, and the the last song on The Emo Diaries Vol. 1, the inaugural edition of Deep Elm Records' now-classic compilation series; the tracklist reads like a who's who of emo's second wave. Now, 21 years since officially calling it quits, POHGOH is getting ready to release a brand new album. Called Secret Club, the record is about the unique experience of putting a band back together after two decades, as well as Susie Ulrey's long, personal battle with multiple sclerosis (she was diagnosed after the band broke up, in 2001).

TRACKLISTING: 01. Business Mode 02. With A Smile 03. Try Harder 04. Reprise 05. Super Secret Club 06. Blood Of The Sun 07. Bunch 08. Digging 09. Who's The You 10. Unfortunate Face 11. Easterberg
