1 - ABRAHAMS, CHRIS - FLUID TO THE INFLUENCE - (LP)
ROOM40

Chris Abrahams returns with 'Fluid To The Influence'. Building upon the foundation of his previous three releases, Abrahams charts out a divergent course through lilting piano flows, distended organ passages, thunderous electronic eruptions and focused concrete explorations. 'Fluid To The Influence' spans a huge spectrum of sound, each movement calling forward to the next in a flowing motion that demonstrates Abrahams' commitment to and interest in the album as an artistic form.

2 - BUCKETT, AUSTIN - GRAIN LOOPS - (LP)
ROOM40

Recorded in Canada at Banff during his residency there, Buckett limited his palette to four snare drums and sandpaper. He drilled deeply into these objects, drawing out a profound sense of detail from the skins through a variety of close microphone techniques. The resulting recordings are hyper-real, exaggerated and so utterly detailed as to be confounding. Inspired in part by an introduction to the German word rauschen from editing the work of his past-mentor, Peter Ablinger, Buckett's 'Grain Loops' borrows from techno and hip hop methodologies.

3 - CHANTLER, JOHN - THE LUMINOUS GROUND - (LP)
ROOM40

Former Australian now London based musician John Chantler offers his second solo LP for Room40 "The Luminous Ground" - his first solo outing in over seven years. "The Luminous Ground" is just that - luminous. A pulsing and glimmering collision of oscillated tone, filtered texture and syncopated rhythm. It's a record of densely joyous, hazily psyche- delic, modular synthesis. A playful yet throughly composed exploration into the possibilities of patching. At its most intense The Luminous Ground is a visceral and sonically tactile experience - low bass gusts pounding underneath a flurry of melodious tonal clusters. At its most sparse the record hints at more pastoral (albeit electronically generated) sentiments - but at no point does the record's movements stray. There's a clear sense of trajectory here and Chantler rides it with an expert sensibility. Pressed in a strictly limited edition of 320 copies, mastered and cut by LUPO at D&M and housed in silk-screen sleeves.

5 - COOPER, MIKE - FRATELLO MARE - (LP)
ROOM40

A notable LP of the Italy-based musician's highly personal lap steel playing combined with exotic music and percussion, alongside field recordings made on islands across South-East Asia and the Caribbean. The result is a poetic, dreamlike, wandering love letter to the distant islands that dot the vast oceans.

7 - HATAKEYAMA, CHIHEI - MIRROR - (CD)
ROOM40

Reflection, ricochet and reverberation - it's these three words that summurise the character of Chihei Hatakeyama's new edition Mirror. Drawing deeply on the earliest recorded period of Japan's history, the Kofun era, Hatakeyama's Mirror meditates on the importance placed on reflection during this age. The mirror was a source of great inspiration, not only as a metaphor for the sun, but also for its ability to shift and reflect light from one location to another. This act of transplanting light considered almost magical by many during that time. Similarly this idea of reflection spurred Hatakeyama to undertake a new recording method. Taking layers of composed instrumental passages and then re-recording them in a variety of reverberant spaces, Hatakeyama sought to accentuate and amplify the harmonic qualities of the sounds. Overtones were shaped by these spaces and rich fluctuations emerged from the original recorded elements. This process of re-recording leading to the rich tonal qualities heard in Mirror. Spaced out with a series of intimate field recordings, marking the points of arrival and depar- ture between the composed pieces, Mirror is an elegant second chapter in Hatakeyama"s ongoing textural songbook for Room40.

8 - HEXA - FACTORY PHOTOGRAPHS - (LP)
ROOM40

Lawrence English and Jamie Stewart began to form a focused mode of operation that concerned itself primarily with physically affective sound, cycling rhythm and intense textural density. Deciding on the name HEXA, their work together became quickly focused on the David Lynch Factory Photographs project in Australia, 2015, following the Gallery Of Modern Art's commission captured here.

9 - IRISARRI, RAFAEL ANTON - A FRAGILE GEOGRAPHY - (LP)
ROOM40

An exercise in the art of maximal minimalism, this album contrasts passages of great beauty and calm, with harrowing waves of density and pressure; it is considered but not excessively laboured, open but never unruly.

10 - IRISARRI, RAFAEL ANTON - THE NORTH BEND - (CD)
ROOM40

The North Bend being a continuance of, and contributing a new form to those traditions, that of neoclassical, spectral and ambient sublimity. Irisarri's depiction of that process, in the form of this recording, is a chronicle of just such a dialog between the self impressing sound on the natural world and it's resounding response expressed through the work in turn." 13 - PHILLIPS, SIMON JAMES - CHAIR - (LP)
ROOM40

'Chair' is an album of clustered piano works, where notes compound and flutter in a spiraling flow of attack and decay. Using the natural sustain of both his chosen instrument and the recording environment -the Grunewald Church in Berlin- Phillips' playing draws out the natural harmonic saturation of his subjects. 'Chair' reminds us that less is almost always more.

14 - STEINBRUCHEL - NARROW - (CD)
ROOM40

Steinbrl's Narrow is an album of reduction and transformation. Like much of Steinbrl's recorded work, the genesis of Narrow stems from a singular idea concerned with the notion of "static development". Working with a limited palette of source material Narrow's elegance is in its varying perspectives on related sonic materials. The title track is the nexus here - a somewhat more organic sound palette than heard previously in Steinbrl's work - Narrow is a subharmonic oceanic-like composition. Melodic layers like waves gentle swell and fall in a pulsing undulation that is uniquely Steinbrl in nature. The following variations, seek to redefine the qualities of the title work. Like a timelapse of sunlight passing across a space, at any one point certain objects are highlighted, whilst others are muted and reduced - n-variations are audio timelapse miniatures. Small segments of a greater moment, refocused, analysed and recomposed. Rather than repeating themes and characteristics, each variation digs deeper into the original composition, unearthing unfamiliar elements and minimal layers lost in the dense flows of Narrow. Narrow seeks out the sonic traces that lie inbetween and underneath perception. The five variations uncover the hidden sonic artefacts that exist within the original composition and in doing so reveal a deeper sonic quality that is exquisite in its detail.

15 - TOOP, DAVID - ENTITIES INERTIAS FAINT BEINGS - (LP)
ROOM40

According to David Toop himself, this album consists of "spores maybe" or "clusters of digital files" that existed already but required several intense "periods of solitude" involving the reception of late-night hypnagogic images on aboriginal mountaintops and hours spent "gazing into ocean flux" for said spores to begin their process of germination. Toop's first album since 2006!
