1 - APARTMENT - HOUSE OF SECRETS - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

Whereas Bristol is all too often associated with the ''Bristol Sound'' of Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky, the city has produced musicians and bands who's work goes way past that stereotype. With the release finally of Apartment's 'House of Secrets' album, music lovers will hear a classic example of this for themselves. In the mid to late 1970's the raucous-and-angry meets chorus-strewn 'new wave' sounds of New York and punk driven London were also finding fertile soil in the west of England. Hidden away right out in the suburbs of the eastern fringes of the metropolis, 3 young lads called APARTMENT were forging a truly international, post-punk variation of the classic guitar band trio. Guitarist / singer / songwriter, Alan Griffiths, drummer Emil, and bassist Richard White had a vision that was driven by their talent and ambition, and a burning desire to shatter the complacency of what was going on musically in Bristol and beyond. The spirit of CBGB's had infused this band, like no other from the city of Bristol's environs. In spite of the inevitable technical limitations of these home-recorded songs, enough of their power and passion shines from them and into the wonderful variety of songs.Apartment's star burned brightly for a relatively short period, but the band packed alot into their time together. They did a session for national radio in the UK, played shows in London at the legendary original site of the Marquee club, and along with releasing just the one single were also included on one of the seminal compilations of music from a city in the UK, 'Avon Calling', released on arguably the most important label at that time, Heartbeat Records.'House of Secrets' collects that blend of organised chaos in all of its glory from a heady time in Bristol music, and all over the UK at the time. Open the door and walk on in.

2 - CLAYTOWN TROUPE - HEY LORD - (12")
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

Coloured vinyl EP with insert. Limited to 300 copies.Storming out of Bristol in the late 1980s, alternative goth rockers Claytown Troupe snared three major record label deals and built an enviable national following. If the band never quite fulfilled their enormous potential, they have left a remarkable recorded legacy. That's about to be completed by Bristol Archive Records with the first public release of the legendary original 'Dungeon Demos' that got the quintet signed to Island Records back in 1988. Long thought lost, these recordings were recently unearthed by band founder and frontman Christian Riou, who was surprised to find how great they still sound after all this time. The four raw and unvarnished tracks include the original versions of Claytown Troupe's first two singles 'Hey Lord' and 'Prayer', alongside 'Real Life' and 'Chiricahua Sun'. Each of these appeared in reworked form on the band's debut album, 'Through the Veil', which was released in 1989Because the demos were so strong, Christian originally proposed releasing them on a fake indie label. But he was overruled by Island, who promptly dispatched the band to the studio to record that debut album. So these fascinating recordings have gathered dust ever since. Finally, a vital piece of Bristol music history can now be heard

3 - COOL RUNNINGS - COOL RUNNINGS - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

With a career that spanned twelve years, including the entire 1980s, Cool Runnings were one of Bristol's longest lasting bands. Yet their failure to gig beyond the West Country, or release anything more than their lone twelve inch single means that they are also one of the City's best kept musical secrets. Originally formed in Weston-Super-Mare by Keyboardist Mark Tuck and Guitarist George Condover, they immediately relocated to Bristol and recruited various local musicians including an experienced and talented singer, Winston Minott. Although "Robin Hoods Of The Ghetto" was their solitary release, the band regularly recorded material throughout their career and fortunately thanks to the foresight of George and Mark in holding onto various master tapes, Bristol Archive Records are able to release the band's self titled debut album "Cool Runnings".

"Jer put the band together, he definitely had a vision of what he wanted; he was very hip - Dexter and Mike went to the same school as him" remembers Nick. "He found me via Mark Stewart, who I went to school with, and I brought Dan in; we had played in a band together before. We used to practise at the back of Jers Dads shop".This album contains all four tracks from those two great singles, plus ten rare early demo tracks, all newly remastered

5 - CORTINAS - MK1 - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

14 stunning tracks previously unreleased on official CD. Bristol's first punk band, The Cortinas, formed in March 1976 when Jeremy Valentine (vocals), Nick Sheppard (guitar), Mike Fewins (guitar), Dexter Dalwood (bass) and Daniel Swan were still at school."Jer put the band together, he definitely had a vision of what he wanted; he was very hip - Dexter and Mike went to the same school as him" remembers Nick. "He found me via Mark Stewart, who I went to school with, and I brought Dan in; we had played in a band together before. We used to practise at the back of Jer's Dad's shop". The Cortinas soon built up a big local following, and a break came when the band supported The Stranglers at the fabled Roxy Club in Covent Garden on 22 January 1977. Things thenmoved quickly for the band. Miles Copeland and Mark Perry's Step Forward label released the classic singles 'Fascist Dictator' in June and 'Defiant Pose' in December, the band recorded a fine Peel session, and they appeared on the front cover of the April/May issue of Sniffin' Glue. Heady stuff, but sadly, it was over all too soon. The following year, after a poorly received album, the band were no more, but in 1977 they were unstoppable - simply one of the best first wave punk bands around. This album contains all four tracks from those two great singles, plus ten rare early demo tracks, all newly remastered and previously only available as a Limited-edition Vinyl release in 2010.

6 - DUBKASM - BRIXTON REC - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

Leading lights in the 21st century UK digi dub/roots scene Dubkasm have built themselves a worldwide following for their brand of reggae since launching their own Sufferah's Choice label in 2003. What many fans may not realise is that even before that first Sufferah's Choice release, Dubkasm had nearly a decade's worth of recordings behind them. Unfortunately, other than a track on the 1996 "Dub Out West Volume Two" compilation album, those early recordings were the preserve of leading UK sound systems such as Aba Shanti and Jah Shaka and could only be heard played off dub plates at dances.

7 - ELECTRIC GUITARS - THE BEST OF ELECTRIC GUITARS (RE-STRUNG) - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

This is the early eighties at its very best, these boys took all the best bits of the freedom that punk provided and turned it into something accessible. something you could dance to. This album is the journey (in no specific order) through the EG's development to their break up shortly after the release of 'Wolfman Tap', a catchy smooth production which led some reviewers to tag the EG's funk. 'Health'/ 'Continental Shelf' was released as a single on Fried Egg Records and their second single 'Work', not written from experience, was a UK Indie chart hit on Recreational Records. Signing to Stiff Records opened doors to Martin Rushents production, 7", 12" and EP delivered, covers designed by Peter Saville. They were the band most likely to! Although never gaining mainstream fame, Electric Guitars deserve a chance to feature in modern playlists. Sandwich Language Problems' between Talking Heads and the B 52's and you can't go wrong.

8 - ESCAPE, THE - LIVE IN 1982 - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

From the stale suburbs, sleepy satellite dormitory districts of the outer reaches and inner city vacant Victorian vicinities of Bristol, three young men came together in the city with a vision to make the public sit up and listen. They wanted to get out there and gave themselves the right kind of name - The Escape. They were fuelled on a diet of Comsat Angels, Bauhaus, Killing Joke, Echo and the Bunnymen, Television, Southern Death Cult, Theatre of Hate and the combined content of a typical John Peel radio programme, out-there fanzines and the most alienated individual anywhere with their prized record collection. A constant input of dark, Goth, strident and nowhere to go angst and alienation combined with a desire to make serious waves drove the band

10 - FAIRLEY, ANDY - FISHFOOD VS THE BIRTH OF SHARON - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

This is a project born out of love for an artist that few have heard of. The album was compiled and the sleeve notes written by Howard Purse, who was Andy's band mate in both bands. The sleeve design is a painting from local artist Jimmy Galvin who played guitar alongside Andy and Howard in The Birth of Sharon. Andy and his music touched them and thirty years later they wanted to expose it to a wider audience. Mike Darby and Bristol Archive Records are here for exactly this sort of project, genuinely original and creative music from Bristol's past that has fallen through the cracks, blissfully ignored by the London centric music industry in the eighties it has finally found it's spiritual home with us.The music touched others, especially musicians, The Pop Groups Mark Stewart calls Andy his generation's Chatterton, another great Bristolian talent lost at an early age, whilst Geoff Barrow chose Andy's music for Portishead to use as pre gig warm up soundtrack. Andy's music is still relevant today and now everyone can find out what the fuss is about and ponder over what might have been.

11 - FEAR OF DARKNESS - THE VIRGIN LAND - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

When you come from a small town, then as the song goes, the only thing you want to do is to get out. That certainly was the aim of Fear of Darkness. They tuned into their hearts, picked up guitars and drums and set about their business. 'The Virgin Land' is a punk-driven yell of rage from the mid-1980's, turning into a healthy racket, all straight down frantically picked and plucked T-Rex rock and roll, merging into a maelstrom slalom ride of energy and expression of youth. The 18 tracks on this 17 song album - you get 2 versions of the band's self-titled epic - pack a punch and have plenty to say.'All Fall Down' sees FOD come over more as a Goth version of The Clash, with overtones of Gene Loves Jezebel and The Cult, reaching out with thunderbolts of spaced-out, raise the roof guitar squalls and sonic boom boy grooves, taking in a James Bond homage en route: 007 and rising. It's a feature that recurs. 'After the Fire' and 'Keys of Time' are filled with forceful, youthful, aggressive, questioning, impassioned, no playing dead, sometimes na´ve but never less than enthusiastic energy. 'Inside Your Heart' oozes a more pop-rock sensibility, with a near crooning backing vocal. 'Chains and Gates' almost pre-dates the modern romantic gesture of putting locks on bridges, railings and gates.'The Virgin Land' is a worthy addition to the canon of 80's alternative guitar albums

TRACKLISTING: 01. Falling Down 02. After The Fire 03. Keys Of Time 04. Inside Your Heart 05. Fear Of Darkness (live) 06. You Can Only Be Yourself 07. Chains And Gates 08. Justice 09. Promises 10. The Virgin Land 11. The Other Side Of The Hill 12. Tear Me Up 13. Burning 14. Fear Of Darkness 15. Same Old Story 16. Darkness (mega Mix) 17. Falling Down (version) 18. In A Rut (live)

12 - FRESH 4 - THE LOST TAPES - (LP)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

Think of the "Bristol Sound" and the same three or four bands tend to spring to mind however, the first widely heard example of the pioneering new sound from the West Country came with a 1989 attack on the Top Ten from South Bristol in the shape of established collective Fresh 4. Co produced by fellow Bristol pioneers Smith and Mighty, "Wishing on A Star" was the first exposure many people outside of Bristol got to the unique fusion of heavy bass lines, Hip Hop beats, soulful vocals and new takes on classic songs. Although "Wishing on a Star" cracked the Top Ten, the two follow up singles were less successful and due to disagreements with their label, a planned album never materialised and the group members went their separate ways. In the following decade Suv, Krust and Flynn would all go on to find greater success as pioneers and mainstays of Bristol's hugely successful Drum and Bass scene, writing new chapters that overshadowed their earlier success. Who can say what might have happened if a Fresh 4 album had been released on a major label at the start of the 1990s. We can't give you that lost album, but we have tracked down some long forgotten demo tapes and twenty five years later, assembled them into an album. It's not THE Fresh 4 LP, but it is filling in a gap in their story and the story of Bristol music. Side A sees some early authentic British Hip Hop with that unique Bristol twist, whilst side B aims for a then contemporary dance sound. A reminder, that Fresh 4 have more to their claim of a place in Bristol's musical history than those three singles.

13 - LYNCH, RITA - STORY TO TELL - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

Rita Lynch: a worthy heir of Patti Smith, The Velvet Underground, Poison Girls, Iggy Pop and Pauline Murray and gutsy contemporary of PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, Kirsten Hersh and Juliana Holter. This documents Rita's 30 years of work in the world's musical underground. She has produced nine outstanding studio albums to date. This compilation spans her career and includes unreleased demos, mixes and classic tracks which truly represent the breadth of Rita's song writing ability. Songs like 'Beautiful Eyes' and 'Call me your Girlfriend' and 'Rolla Coaster', included on this album, have been soundtracks to many people's lives. Her recent work with Blue Aeroplanes drummer and bassist; Jon Langley and Mike Youe have been her most productive yet.The daughter of Irish immigrants to London in the 1950's, she was brought up a very religious child and wanted to be a nun or a saint when she grew up. Instead, inspired by Bob Dylan, Irish traditional music and then the counter-revolution of punk rock, she became a songwriter and threw herself into every experience she could get. Hard drinking and living in squats, travelling Europe, experimenting sexually and living a life that challenged preconceptions of identity, led her to be upheld as a true Lesbian icon. She fought though, against the limits of any categorisation and made music that reflected that. Her work bristles with an aggression that is often softened by her words and her ability to write about humility, sexuality, religion and death speaks to all of us. Channel 4 made a documentary about her life and work called 'On the road with Rita Lynch' in 1998 and she has been inspirational for so many artists:

14 - MERCURY RAIN - ST. MATTHIEU - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

Formed in 1994 by young veterans of the Bristol music scene, Mercury Rain started life unpromisingly as three guys who 'just wanted to play metal'. Ex-Crisis bassist Jon Hoare and bandmate and drummer Andy Pester had hooked up with guitarist Dion Smith, but Mercury Rain lacked both a singer and a direction until Sonia Porzier gave them both. Responding to a 'vocalist wanted' advert she brought to the band both a fabulous voice and a copy of Nightwish's second album 'Oceanborn'.At this time the metal female voices genre was still pretty much in its infancy, but Sonia's arrival not only filled the void behind the mike stand but also set them on the path to being possibly the best-known British band of the genre.'St Matthieu' showcases the best of the genre. With its intro 'Tales From Beyond' sung in French, 'St Matthieu' features a brace of songs which thunder along, with furious riffs underpinning lush orchestration and Sonia's vocals floating above the metal furore. The songs are cleverly written so as not to reveal themselves too early, and even the shorter material twists and turns like the Minotaur's labyrinth. The highlight is undoubtedly the ten-minute title track, while 'Chimaera' is as close to a traditional neck-wrenching metal workout as you can get and the uncompromising 'The Messenger' features guest growls from Chris Neighbour, frontman from Weston-super-Mare's face-shredding Four Way Kill. This compilation features the album in its entirety, augmented by three cuts from previous album 'Dark Waters' ('The City Of Ys', 'Bride Of the Dark' and 'The Boat Of The Dead') and 'Incubus' and 'Amber Reflections' from the band's extremely rare 'Where Angels Fear' debut. With all tracks recently remastered, a lengthy interview with Jon and Sonia and previously unpublished photos, 'St Matthieu - Remastered & Reborn' emphasises what an exciting and ground-breaking album this was for the UK metal female voices genre.

15 - MOSES, JOSHUA - JOSHUA TO JASHWHA-30 YEARS IN WILD- - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

From the beginning of Bristol Archive Records involvement in documenting Bristol's neglected reggae heritage we've wanted to release an album that showcases the great talent of one of the local reggae scene's mainstays, Joshua Moses. Unfortunately, Joshua has no copies of the many recording sessions he has done in the years since his first session in 1978, and so it has taken more than eighteen months of painstaking research and the pursuit of numerous leads to gather together the ten tracks on "Joshua To Jashwha - 30 Years In The Wilderness". The result is more than worth any effort involved on our part and is as strong a debut album as anyone could wish for, guaranteed to create a buzz among reggae fans worldwide. The tracks on this album were recorded between 1978 and 2003 yet prior to Bristol Archive's involvement the only tracks to have been previously released were the very scarce "Africa (Is Our Land) and it's dub counterpart "Home". The former, included on the "Bristol Reggae Explosion 1978-1983" and both tracks will be reissued on a very limited 12" in February 2012. The only other track to have previously seen the light of day is "Rise Up", first heard on "The Bristol Reggae Explosion Volume 2". Again we have included its dub counterpart and again we are releasing a very limited edition 12" alongside "Africa (Is Our Land)" in February 2012

TRACKLISTING: 01. "africa (is Our Land)" 02. "home" 03. "house Of Dread" (live) 04. "stick It Up" (live) 05. "jah Time Has Come" 06. "rise Up" 07. "rise Up Dub" 08. "steel" 09. "protection" (live) 10. "distant Guns"

17 - PIGS - 1977 - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

Released on CD for the first time. "When we finally got to see The Cortinas at the Granary - up till then we had them down as more of the Feelgood thing - wow we really got the message!! And that's what did it. It was so energizing, it felt like we had to get our band started the next day, the same night probably. The Punk train came and we all jumped on it, like a lot of people did, but we were the first ones on in Bristol, after The Cortinas." - Kit Gould, The Pigs.New Bristol Records was set up after the band supported Generation X at Chutes, where they met Miles Copeland. "We decided to set it up, it was our idea, with Vernon and John (their managers), and he just went along with it", says Kit. "Now, looking back, it's obvious that if Miles Copeland's going to pay for you to do a recording, he's not just donating it to you, so you can set up your own label, whereas at the time that seemed like an entirely realistic proposition. It's just na´ve kids really that don't have a clue about the music business. Miles Copeland came on board, he was our London connection." The band went into Sound Conception Studio on 12 August 1977 and recorded their whole set, from which four tracks were selected for the 'Youthanasia' EP. It gained airplay on John Peel's show and sales were reasonable, but it proved to be their only release. They continued to gig regularly, including two more shows with The Cortinas, a support slot with Siouxsie and the Banshees at Barton Hill Youth Club, and even a headliner at the legendary (but by that time sadly ailing), Roxy, on 13 January 1978 with Open Sore and The Heat, but they called it a day the following March. And now we are proud to give you, for the first time, all eleven tracks that the band recorded at Sound Conception.

19 - RATCHET, DAN - JAH POOR PEOPLE - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

1986 was a period of transition for reggae music. In Jamaica roots had been entirely displaced by dancehall which itself was progressing from the early digital sound into what would become known as ragga, whilst in the UK a more mellow approach inspired by the commercial success of lover's rock held sway. Reggae's twin capitals of Kingston and London couldn't have been on more different paths and yet this was the year that a young Dan Ratchet would travel between both cities, absorbing their very different vibes and working with leading musicians from both scenes to record tracks for what was intended to be his first album. Now after 26 years, that album "Jah Poor People" finally gets released on Bristol Archive Records on 16th July. Although he'd already gained plenty of experience on the live scene as a member of Full Force + Power amongst other things, Dan's big opportunity came through his cousin Simbarashe Tongogara, a writer and producer who was very well known on the UK reggae scene and had extensive connections both in the UK and Jamaica. Spotting Dan's talent Simba arranged for him to record the first sessions in London with backing provided by members of Aswad and Misty In Roots amongst others. An extended stay in Jamaica saw further sessions at Channel 1, Tuff Gong and Dynamic studios with first rate backing musicians including Earl "Chinna" Smith and Sly Dunbar. The final mixes were done by Steven Stanley best known for his work with Bob Marley and The Wailers.

21 - SMITH & MIGHTY - THE THREE STRIPE COLLECTION 85-90 - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

During the 1990s, "The Bristol Sound" became a global phenomenon with albums from Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky regularly placed high in polls of the best albums of the decade or indeed of all time. But for those in the know, "The Bristol Sound" had been defined at the tail end of the eighties with a string of releases from the studio of Rob Smith and Ray Mighty. Perhaps if they hadn't been so ahead of the field, had released an album instead of a run of singles or if their subsequent signing to a major label had worked out, the names Smith & Mighty would be as well known as those other Bristol artists. The majority of these tracks have never been re-released since they appeared as singles more than twenty years ago and for the first time they are gathered together as an album. "The Three Stripe Collection 1985-1990" will be issued on May 14th as a double vinyl LP, CD and digital download, to borrow from one of the song titles "This Is The Time" to finally acknowledge the Smith & Mighty legacy and as Krissy Kriss says in that very song, "This is what we call the Bristol Style......just listen".

22 - SMITH & MIGHTY - THE THREE STRIPE COLLECTION 85-90 - (LP)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

Limited edition of 500 copies on blue vinyl.During the 1990s, "The Bristol Sound" became a global phenomenon with albums from Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky regularly placed high in polls of the best albums of the decade or indeed of all time. But for those in the know, "The Bristol Sound" had been defined at the tail end of the eighties with a string of releases from the studio of Rob Smith and Ray Mighty. It's never too late to put the record straight and Bristol Archive Record's 2012 compilation "The Three Stripe Collection 1985-1990" did just that. The 17 tracks were personally selected and compiled by Rob Smith and start with "Walk On" and "Anyone" the two songs that announced the arrival of Smith & Mighty and heralded the coming of "The Bristol Sound". They took musical ingredients from reggae, funk, hip hop, pop, house, soul and anywhere else that inspired them, added a huge amount of talent, skill, originality, a large portion of the Bristol vibe, some primitive digital technology and turned out cutting edge, boundary crossing dance music the likes of which had never been heard before.

23 - STORMTROOPER - PRIDE BEFORE A FALL - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

Bristol's very own Stormtrooper were ahead of the 'N.W.O.B.H.M', as they had originally formed in the mid 1970's. But they were right in there more than holding their own with the likes of Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Saxon and Motorhead in terms of seeing their music released in the slip-stream of that catch-all 'brand identity'. Bristol as a city has no claim to being a rock stronghold, but the band didn't let that hold their campaign back. Their passion, talent and ambition enabled them to launch themselves to gain recognition, and their hard work and blistering live shows paid off when 'Pride Before A Fall' became one of the singles released through the unlikely means of local Heartbeat Records operation, run by Simon Edwards in Bristol. 'Pride' roared its' way into the 'Heavy Metal' chart at 23 in Sounds in its' first week of release. It reached the heady heights of number 11 after. But unfortunately that was as far as it got in terms of national recognition of the bands' releases. Now the other recordings made by the band in that era, are available on 'Pride Before A Fall - The Lost Album'. Songs like 'In The State In the City' and 'Still Coming Home' showcase the bands' unique blend of Bob Starling's distinctive and passionate blazing guitar attack, with the driving force of an electrifying rhythm section. Nick Hancox's technically brilliant and energetic drumming fused with Colin 'Boggy' Bond's knock down the walls bass playing, and his definitive use of Moog bass pedals which brought another dimension to the textures in the music. In the best traditions of a great rock band, this was topped by the rock power and vocal range of singer, Paul Merrell.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Pride Before A Fall 02. Battle Of The Eve 03. In The State In The City 04. If It Takes A Man A Week To Walk A Fortnight Then How Long Is A Piece .. 05. Bounty Hunter 06. Still Comin' Home 07. Drunken Women 08. Confusion 09. After Battle

24 - VARIOUS - BEST OF HEARTBEAT RECORDS - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

Heartbeat Records was set up in Bristol in 1978 by local folkie-type musician Simon Edwards and music store owner Tony Dodds to release the debut single by Bristol punk band Social Security. John Peel dubbed 'I Don't Want My Heart to Rule My Head' "Charmingly rustic", but then he would. With a free button badge coming with each copy, the record sold well and despite Dodds jumping ship after its release, the label was up and running. With a few exceptions, Heartbeat largely moved away from punk into post-punk territory, serving up a dazzling array of clever, quirky bands - lots of sparse jagged guitars, busy drums and all the synths you could eat. But having said that, bands like Europeans, Apartment, The X-Certs, Glaxo Babies, The Letters, Stormtrooper, Art Objects and Affairs of the Heart, to name just several, were exploring very different styles giving the label a richly diverse roster that probably reached its peak with the release of Heartbeat's 1979 compilation Avon Calling, described by John Peel (again) as "...really the standard by which the others must be judged in future. Because it really is superb, there are 15 tracks on the LP, genuinely not a bad one amongst them, and a lot of really good stuff." And that went for Heartbeat as a whole, as you'll hear on this comprehensive collection of the label's finest tracks

TRACKLISTING: 01. Glaxo Babies - Who Killed Bruce Lee 02. Europeans - Europeans 03. The Letters - Nobody Loves Me 04. X - Certs - Blue Movies 05. Apartment - The Car 06. Private Dicks - She Said Go 07. Glaxo Babies - Christine Keeler 08. Art Objects - Showing Off To Impress The Girls 09. Social Security - Stellas Gotta Fella 10. Essential Bop - Chronicle 11. Apartment - Winter 12. Joe Public - Hotel Rooms 13. Glaxo Babies - Its Irrational 14. Sneak Preview - Slugwierd 15. Directors - What You've Got 16. Private Dicks - Green Is In The Red 17. Double Vision - My Dead Mother 18. Vice Squad - Nothing 19. Stingrays - Sound 20. Stormtrooper - Pride Before A Fall 21. Fear Of Darkness - Fear Of Darkness 22. Glaxo Babies - Shake (the Foundations) 23. Affairs Of The Heart - Waterloo Sunset 24. Art Objects - Paperweight Flood

25 - VARIOUS - BRISTOL BOYS MAKE MORE NOISE - (Bk)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

Bristol's leading counter-culture publishers Tangent Books and Bristol Archive Records have joined forces to produce a photographic book, download and CD celebrating the Bristol music scene 1974-1981.The book, Bristol Boys Make More Noise is based on the work of John Spink one of the few photographers to capture the Bristol music scene from the mid 1970s to the early 1980s. John moved to Bristol from London in 1972 and fell in with the band Magic Muscle who lived in the communal 'Fun House' in Cotham' He worked as an occasional photographer for music mags as well as performing in some early shows by the surrealist Crystal Theatre. He pioneered a technique of processing black and white film using X-ray developer which enabled him to shoot in low light (such as clubs) without using flash. This collection not only captures the Bristol scene during these years as Bristol music moved from 70s rock (Magic Muscle) through punk (The Cortinas) to the experimental adventurers The Pop Group and The Various Artists but also showcases John's unique photographic style. In 1981, John left Bristol for New York where he worked for Caroline Records. He now lives in Northern California and works as a tour manager for a large music merchandising company.John's pictures are put in context by author Gill Loats who was at the heart of the Bristol music scene working as a DJ at the infamous Dug Out Club and watching live music most nights of the week. The release of the book is accompanied by the launch of a CD and download. The CD features 22 tracks including contributions from Magic Muscle, The Cortinas, Shoes for Industry, The Various Artists, The Ratbites From Hell, The Spics and The X-Certs.

26 - VARIOUS - BRISTOL BOYS MAKE MORE NOISE! MODS, POWERPOP .. - (CD)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

Bristol Archive Records have been telling the story of the incredibly diverse Bristol Music scene for several years: Now they turn their attention to another sub culture - Mods, Power Pop and Scooter Boys. This album covers the period 1979 to 1987 and features 21 tracks. When punk rock started to fizzle out and Squat Punks started to appear on the streets, many of the UK's disaffected youths had already moved sideways in Modernism and fell in love with bands like The Jam, Secret Affair and The Chords. The West Country embraced the scene and produced its own Mod bands like Mayfair and The Newbeats. Other bands were in on the act but could be more appropriately described as Power Pop / Ska, namely The A.T's from Bath, The Review from Clevedon and Sky High from Gloucester. Success for some was supporting their heroes, a good example being Thin Air with their 14 year old guitarist and songwriter Paul Sandrone, who supported The Jam at The Locarno in 1980. Or The Rimshots, who played on the same bills as The Beat and The Bodysnatchers. Most of the tracks on this album are previously unreleased or were issued on tiny runs of limited 7" vinyl. Some of our boys did make the grade though. Huw Gower with his band The Records, signing to Virgin in 1978 and had a number 56 Billboard Top 100 hit single with 'Starry Eyes', also playing on the same bills as the Jam. Huw recorded the track 'She's Still a Mystery immediately after he'd left The Records in 1981 with a big anthemic chorus, classic trademarks of The Who.This album is a soundtrack to an era, remembering a period in time when Top of The Pops was full of Two Tone bands. Thatcherism was killing multi cultural Britain but to escape, it was ok to write a catchy pop song, it was ok to look smart and it was acceptable to wear a Parka (weirdly all the rage again now in the 2016). The book provisionally entitled "To Be Someone - Bristol Mod 1979-1985" written by Michael W Salter will follow later in the year published by Bristol Archive Records and Tangent Books which tells the story of the Bristol Mod and Scooter Boy scene.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Too Young Girl - The A.t's 02. She's Still A Mystery - Huw Gower 03. A Thousand Burning Voices - Thin Air 04. Little Boys And Little Girls - The Rimshots 05. Traffic - Mayfair 06. Weekends - The Various Artists 07. Second Chance - The Gross Club 08. Maryanne - Sky High 09. I Was Wrong - The Rimshots 10. Hermans Back - Joe Public 11. Englands Glory - The Review 12. November Rain - Cass Carnaby Five 13. Keep Your Distance - The Untouchables 14. Nobody Loves Me - The Letters 15. Sand In My Face - The A.t's 16. Sentry's Life - Thin Air 17. Somebody's Girl - The Newbeats 18. The Legend - Mayfair 19. Fleet Street - The Review 20. Experiments In Colour (live) - Blue Riverside 21. High Time Baby (live) - Blue Riverside

29 - VARIOUS - BRISTOL REGGAE EXPLOSION LIVE - (C+D)
BRISTOL ARCHIVE

For the past three years, Bristol Archive Records have shone the spotlight on the City's musical legacy, particularly reggae. Last year a who's who of Bristol reggae artists gathered together for The Bristol Reggae Explosion Live. With many of the artists coming from St. Paul's and with most of them having been involved in past carnivals, it seemed obvious to turn this celebration of Bristol and St. Paul's musical legacy performed by the elders and filmed by the youths into something that could benefit the community and the next generation of performers.Knowing of the yearly struggle to raise funds for St. Paul's Carnival, Bristol Archive Records will be releasing "The Bristol Reggae Explosion Live 2012" as a CD/DVD package with profits donated to The St. Paul's Carnival. the DVD contains eleven performances from Lord John Hutchinson, Bunny Marrett, Dennis McCalla aka Dallas, Popsy Curious, Glen Crookes, Dan Ratchet, Jashwha Moses and the mighty Talisman, who also provide backing for the other acts. The accompanying CD contains 17 studio recordings from the acts involved and as well as those featured on the DVD, we get to enjoy the talents of Winston Minott, Veronica Morrison aka Veereal, Vibes and Cool Runnings with several tracks previously unreleased.
