1 - MCGEE, KIRSTY - CONTRABAND - (CD)
HOBOPOP

Borne of a turbulent year that saw McGee come close to giving up music for good, CONTRABAND is a defiant yet tender collection of songs. British singer and songwriter Kirsty McGee has been a full time musician since her 2002 debut (BBC Folk Award Nominee for Best Newcomer). Subsequent releases saw her grow in stature and reputation, gathering award nominations and wins along the way (BBC Folk Award Nominee 2005 for Best Original Song, IMA winner 2011 for Best Live Album), earning a life on the road and building a devoted following in the UK, across Europe and America. Over the course of five albums her folk beginnings evolved into 'hobopop' - her own description for her sound - a rootless, joyful stomp steeped in folk, jazz and old-time Americana. The resulting album is a transatlantic melting pot, reflecting the variety of skills they brought. CONTRABAND has songs that are pure pop (Something Going On), Waitsian Jazz (Setting of the Sun), Partonesque Country (Sequins) and ballads (Contraband). This is a work of contradictions - anger goes head to head with compassion, resignation sits alongside defiance. McGee rails against the cruelty of the world yet is utterly beguiled by its beauty and its gifts.

2 - MCGEE, KIRSTY -& THE HOBOPOP COLLECTIVE- - THE DEAFENING SOUND OF SILENCE - (CD)
HOBOPOP

Drawing on old vinyl blues, gospel, '30s jazz, Brechtian ballads and Brill Building sensibilities, Kirsty eschews the lures of genre stereotyping. Constantly striving for new and inspirational backdrops for her soundscapes, The Deafening Sound Of Stars sees the release of 14 new songs as well as a limited edition 'sister' record of field recordings made in Italy last summer.Kirsty began writing the album in a caravan in the Mojave desert in the autumn of 2015, planning to make a series of field recordings inspired by jazz standards. A first attempt to record the songs was made in Arctic Norway in January 2018 and this was followed up by a second pass in Italy later that year. 'We recorded live and without air conditioning in the swamp heat of a humid August. Two days in a wooden cellar by a church whose bells chimed twice on the hour and once at half past, later in a fifteenth century church in the Italian mountains where I kept cool by placing my feet on freezer blocks and sang whilst being feasted on by mosquitoes in 40 degree heat.'Recorded in Leeds UK, the final incarnation of the album features Kirsty's full band that includes players from Beats & Pieces Big Band, Richard Hawley's band and arrangements inspired by Mulatu Astatke and Tom Waits. The bigger arrangements create an album that's cinematic in its musical scope and that delights in exploring musical colour, shape and form.

3 - MCGEE, KIRSTY -& THE HOBOPOP COLLECTIVE- - THOSE OLD DEMONS - (CD)
HOBOPOP

Beatnik by nature, the literate, even filmic, style of Kirsty McGee's output draws on auteurs like Jim Jarmusch and the Coen Brothers; combining humour and dry observation with a grainy old-time black-and-white feel, a smoky jazz bar voice and a deep sense of humanity.Formed in 2007, The Hobopop Collective is McGee's ever-changing bunch of leftfield misfits and ragged visionaries taken from diverse musical backgrounds and raised by extremely gentle wolves. With playing credits ranging from Alison Krauss, Elvis Costello & Tom Waits to Aim and Richard Hawley, the band is unified by a sense of joyous mischief and a compassionate and fair-minded attitude to all genres of music & ways of creating sound. The Collective on this record includes the legendary Marc Ribot (Waits, Costello)The sound is joyful and dirty with hints of gospel and blues, sometimes veering towards jazz, cubist shuffle and wry noir. From musical saw and waterphone to Humber hubcaps and metal buckets, the Collective is a gentle anarchist in a bikini and steel toed boots singing defiant lovesongs through a loudhailer.A prolific and original writer & touring artist, McGee is perhaps best known for her song Sandman which was featured in Danny Boyle's 2013 thriller Trance.
