1 - ADAMS, GREG - KOOLIN OUT - (LP)
COOL CULT

Jazz drummer Greg Adams was active on the Los Angeles experimental jazz scene of the early 1980s. Based in the working class coastal town of Long Beach, California, and with longstanding ties to the industrial east coast city of Wilmington, Delaware, Adams sought to hearken back to the naturalistic form of be-bop, which is why he recorded the material on Koolin Out in a live session with no overdubs, in April 1983. Privately pressed in minute quantities as the sole entity on his own hip city imprint, the album features individual arrangements of Coltranes "Moments Notice" and "Mr P.C.," Wayne Shorters "Armageddon," Joe Hendersons "Recordame" and an extended version of Bobby Hutchersons "Little Bees Poem." Features Dadisi Komolafe on flute, Motown/Nimbus alumnus Nate Morgan on piano, and Panafrikan Peoples Orchestra saxophonist, Kafi Larry Roberts.

2 - CASE, HARRY - MAGIC CAT - (LP)
COOL CULT

Guitarist Harry Case is an unsung hero of the Atlanta funk scene of the 1970s and 80s. He was part of the band that issued the legendary material credited to drummer Steveland Milnes Alias, Stevo, put together under the aegis of Calvin Arnold, with trumpeter Tommy Stewart in charge of musical arrangements. A full decade after the baffling and highly sought-after Musica Negra release, Cases debut solo album, Magic Cat, was issued by Ichiban records, the label established by the british blues and soul magazine founder, John Abbey, with his colleague Nina Easton, to showcase diverse forms of black music. On soave jazz tracks like "Easy Vamp," Case displays the musical dexterity of George Benson, yet allows a touch of rough with the smooth, while "Shake It" and the title track use early beat-box drum machines; Case even tackles lead vocals on songs such as "Niagara (A Jealous Mans Dream)." Also features drummer/keyboardist Morris Ogletree, who played with Wynd Chimes and La Connection.

3 - FIRYUZA - FIRYUZA - (LP)
COOL CULT

A veritable holy grail of jazzy soviet space-rock, the turkmen ensembles self-titled debut lp is the stuff of wonder. Formed in 1979 by keyboardist and bandleader Dmitry Sablin, their copping of the top prize at the sixth all-union entertainers competition in Leningrad led to the recording of this entirely instrumental lp, on which its seven members imitate the sounds of traditional instruments from Turkmenistan, such as the two-stringed lute known as the dutar, the bowed gijjak and the clarinet-like dili tuiduk, alongside more standard western gear, its meandering melodies largely provided by violinist Khana Ten and saxophonist/flutist Sabir Rizayev. Pressed in Tashkent in minute numbers for Melodiya, the album is comprised of only four extended pieces, the elaborate arrangements and otherworldly sound aligning it with the farthest reaches of progressive rock, jazz fusion items and other creations from cosmic pioneers. The incorporation of natural elements such as ocean waves and wind sounds are also non-standard, rendering this one of the strangest and most compelling issues of its kind, made all the more wonderful by the cover image, showing the groups members in traditional turkmen dress.

5 - KASHMERE STAGE BAND - PLAYS ORIGINALS - (LP)
COOL CULT

Texan sax titan Conrad Oberon Johnson eschewed a life of glory as a gigging musician to make a greater mark as a music teacher, particularly at Kashmere high, a secondary school located in Kashmere gardens, a predominantly black neighborhood in Houston. Having played with blues guitarist Goree Carter and the likes of Count Basie, Johnson passed up an opportunity to join Coleman Hawkins band to begin teaching students at Kashmere in 1941. After being inspired by an Otis Redding performance in 1967, Johnson formed the Kashmere Stage Band as a creative output for students at Kashmere High, launching the Kram label in 1969 to house the bands recorded efforts. Modelling the group on rising soul backing bands such as the Bar-kays and The JBs, Kashmere delivered a formidable sound very much in tune with contemporary trends. Early releases relied heavily on cover tunes, but plays originals was comprised entirely of Johnsons compositions, along with closing number "All Praises," written by bassist Ed Rose. Such hot, driving funk in a big-band format was ripe for sampling, a smattering of "Kashmere" ending up on Dj Shadows "Holy Calamity (Bear Witness II)."

TRACKLISTING: 01. Do You Dig It 02. Man? Thunder Soul 03. Kashmere 04. Lost Love 05. Dont Mean A Thing 06. Head Wiggle 07. All Praises

8 - WHITE, BUKKA -& FRIENDS- - MEMPHIS SWAMP JAM - (LP)
COOL CULT

Feted as the "Gateway to the South" and situated just above the Mississippi Deltas cotton-growing zone, Memphis has a long, rich history of blues music, its strategic location rendering it a longstanding centre for the mingling of rural and urban blues styles. The city was thus a very fitting home for the Memphis Blues Festival of 1969 that gave rise to this incredible double live album. Most of the tracks are provided by bluesmen based in Memphis and its environs, such as country blues giant Bukka White, crying blues legend Sleepy John Estes, barrelhouse pianist Memphis Piano Red, electric banjo specialist Nathan Beauregard, country blues great Mississippi Fred McDowell (here collaborating with harmonica player Johnny Woods), singer and fife player Napoleon Strickland with the Como Drum Band and Delta blues man Furry Lewis; credited under the unlikely pseudonyms of RL Watson and Josiah Jones are none other than experimental folk pioneer John Fahey and steel guitarist Bill Barth, the latter a co-founder of the Memphis Country Blues Society.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Booker Bukka White - Christmas Eve Blues 02. Booker Bukka White - Columbus Miss Blues 03. Booker Bukka White - Sad Day Blues 04. Furry Lewis - Judge Boushay Blues 05. Furry Lewis - Walking 06. Sleepy John Estes - President Kennedy Stayed Away Too Long 07. Sleepy John Estes - Need More Blues 08. Nathan Beauregard - Nathans Bumble Bee Blues 09. Nathan Beauregard - Bout A Spoonful 10. Fred Mcdowell And Johnny Woods - Shake Em On Down 11. Fred Mcdowell And Johnny Woods - Freds Blues
