1 - BAIL - IN CLOSING MEMORIES - (LP)
TIME AS A COLOR

Bail have been kicking around for a good 8 years now and I just read that a couple of them were in Collin Kramer. Never knew that! I saw Collin Kramer play with Belle Epoque when I was living in Strasbourg in about 2003-4 - what a great show that was. This record though is also something special. The opening track has me convinced from the off - it's that kind of rolling, melodic and urgent blend of powerful post hardcore and emo that harks back to the 90s. There's a little bit of Native Nod going on and it's driven and urgent. The vocals are bang on - strained and wrought without going over into screamo territory. When it breaks down into a lone guitar line about halfway through the sound is all twinkly before things get more desperate again. There are moments throughout where things get nice and sad like on the brief "Interlude" and the opening to "Triangle #3" before its more desperate second half. The contrast is nicely done every time. "Passerby" might be the standout for me for its urgency and the way it slows down to a lone guitar before the vocals come back and strain to get over the line. This is an absolutely fantastic song. The instrumental last track, "Epilogue" brings the sadness again and closes the record on a sombre note. This band should be talked about a lot more. This is exceptional. I'd heard this record was coming out but had kind of forgotten about it until it appeared in the review list the other day. What a great band, what a cracking record.

2 - BLACK EVERST - DEMO - (7")
TIME AS A COLOR

Somewhere between Hardcore, Screamo but also Post-rock and Crust this 7" is to class in. Extremely powerful, yet playful and not too fiddly. In between a synthesizer provides a kind of epic atmosphere. (Almost feels like a surrounding spaceship). The four guys from Berlin, Hamburg and Oldenburg (Ex-Only for the Sake of Aching) manage the balancing act between hard and fast parts and moodful melodies.

3 - CAPTAIN YOUR SHIP IS SINKING/MOI - SPLIT - (LP)
TIME AS A COLOR

both bands offer 2 songs on this record, CAPTAIN, YOUR SHIP IS SINKING from the Netherlands continue where they stopped on their debut LP, playing postrock-screamo with harsh screams. They play two long songs with a great combination of slow, atmospheric parts followed by harder fast played parts, always with very catchy melodies. The Vocals switch between spoken and screamed parts. On the split side MIO contribute their best two songs so far. Different to their earlier releases these songs are much longer. This Duo (only guitar and drums) play some kind of 90s style

5 - COMA REGALIA/KAORU NAGISA - SPLIT (FLEXI) - (7")
TIME AS A COLOR

the collaboration between Kaoru Nagisa and Coma Regalia accommodates one song each band. Both songs sound just great. At the latest, this split won me over as my attention was drawn to the lyrics of "MQWC". In respect of the legalization of same sex marriage in the States, the song by Coma Regalia could be seen as a hymn, which demands beyond this important, legally step, to accept the human being as its beautiful, individual self, regardless of gender or other categories, settled by the society.

6 - DAYDREAM FIT/DOTLIGHTS/LORRAIN/DUCT HEARTS - SPLIT - (7")
TIME AS A COLOR

the daydream fit offer a classic mid 90s song, sad, but still a banger summer tune! dolights is a project of casper from captain, your ship is sinking. beautiful works on reverbs and clean guitar sounds alongside electronic-ish drum sounds. on the flipside lorraine offer their excellent version of beaty, pissed off, raw, distorted emo. finally duct hearts close the record with their shortest and most straight forward song so far, a full band version of a song that was released as an acoustic version on the ,leave nothing but footprints..." 7" series. less delays than all other songs they recorded so far, and no silent parts in between, just the rock! the artwork itself is astonishing, lots of cuts and folds, screenprinted packing paper combined with paper taken from books, hence each cover is unique. comes with a b&w inlay made of 100g recycling paper and a download code.

7 - DET AR DARFOR VI BYGGER STADER/COME REGALIA - SPLIT - (7")
TIME AS A COLOR

On the Darfor side, they open with twinkly tunes of their track "Alla Mina Vnner" in the vein of Saetia, I Hate Myself and. Wait, did I just say that. Well, yeah. During their second half, the vocalist started yelping and is being followed by a psychological breaking point of crescendos. This is an ultimate of surprise for anyone (especially newcomers) who did not expect this kind of explosion. After the attack stops, the vocalist mourns one more time till the song finishes its job. The following track we are heading onto is "An Apology" by Coma Regalia. The way of their playing is a very passionate melodic screamo in the veins of The Saddest Landscape, Helen of Troy and The Spirit of Versailles. What else can I say, its 5 minutes of incredibly raw passion of punk.

TIME AS A COLOR

after 3 split records duct hearts long awaited debut 7" delivers one giant 11:30 song, edited into 2 parts and pressed onto a 45 RPM 7". musically ,if you prick us, do we not bleed?" spans a bridge between the simplicity of mid 90s emo (as done by christie front drive, mineral, or jimmy eat world before their bleed american era) and postrocks excessive orchestration, strongly influenced by those bands who take other influences from metal or posthardcore into postrock, like isis, pelican or german now defunct bands amber or arktika. you get twinkly chords, airy delays, reverbs, walls-of-sound, whispers, singing, screaming, ebbs and tides, frustration, sudden stops, sudden anger. records come in black cardboard folder with black and silver screenprint, black inner sleeves, insert sheet with lyrics and download code.

11 - GRAND DETOUR - TRIPALIUM - (LP)
TIME AS A COLOR

Grand Detour construct very clever and musical math rock. The only real "math" in math rock is the unusual time signatures which may include 7/11, 13/17 and other odd beats to the bar. However, these guys from France must have studied chaos theory, which reveals a deep, underlying order beneath seemingly random processes. Their style takes in the common elements of math rock, such as variations in pace, sudden pauses, and contrasting gentle and exuberant passages. Where this band excels is in pulling all the instruments back from their individual meanderings and into a solid, cohesive stream of sound.

12 - HEXIS - MMXIV. A. D. XII. KAL DEC (FLEXI) - (7")
TIME AS A COLOR

Although the band definitely fit the blackened hardcore descriptor, Hexis don't play the sort of music you would typically expect from the microgenre. There's nary a d-beat to be found on Abalam and no chugging breakdowns to tell the crowd when to start a circle pit. Instead, the band strips hardcore to its vestigial essence and incorporates that into massive walls of post-black metal noise. this flexi includes 2 songs of abalam and 1 of the split with this gift is a curse and was recorded live in japan

13 - HUMAN HANDS - MORNING SUN - (LP)
TIME AS A COLOR

After their first self titled full length in 2014, whose first press sold out in 2 months, human hands from birmingham, england are back with a new full length, still reminiscent of a lot of bands who were masters of the silent/loud game in the 90s, like boy's life, julia or indian summer, but yet a more mature sound that still keeps your head nodding in time, melancholy, sad, yet full of hope, influenced by a lot of classic singer/songwriters like neill young. You can clearly hear the band has grown up a little, gone are the super furious outbreaks some of the songs had, yet the intensity stays. Human hands are a humble band, but they still have something to say, and they mean it.

15 - K.C. MILIAN - ALL SORTS OF THINGS - (LP)
TIME AS A COLOR

KCM play instrumental postrock, but their sound is less sound of wall, less rock, more chilled out, like Explosions In The Sky, but has some pretty sweet buildups. They are not very mathy or rocking, like Tera Melos and By The End Of Tonight, but their song layouts are similar to that of Piglet. Also, some songs have a trumpet, and one or two have some buried/distant screaming. You might know them from their split 7"" with La Quiete, these songs are a bit like an instrumental version of Blacktop Cadence or the one song I have heard by a band called Audio Armada. Imagine how postrock would've sounded back in the mid 90ies, before it was necessary to overuse delays, reverb and loop pedals. Twinkly instrumental music with some loud parts, but however twinkly most of the times. This is their full discography, about 1 hour in total, including the long out of print Season//Repeat EP on Marsiglia, their self titled EP on Holidays Records, the song from the split 7"" with La Quiete and 3 brandnew unreleased songs. all remastered and pressed on black vinyl. 300 copies were pressed, they come in pantone-color-printed inside out sleeves and include a super thick risoprinted 32 pages booklet with words, pictures and plenty of memories from the band members.

17 - LAUBE/DUCT HEARTS - SPLIT - (7")
TIME AS A COLOR

possibly the very first split record of a postrock/posthardcore/emo band with a bavarian folk singer/songwriter. This gets even more interesting if you know it is a split project of father (laube) and son (duct hearts). Laube play a very calm acoustic song with male/female vocals, 2 guitars and a flute. Duct hearts make a step down from their usual songwriting, clean guitars and programmed drumbeats give a fundament to airy clean vocals, again reminding of elliott's masterpiece ,song in the air". Full color inlay and labels with screenprinted black cardboard wrapping

Gimbal Lock/Pitch/Roll/Yaw is the band's latest two song 7". Lorraine play a dark, tense, and moody style of post punk and punk. Musically, Lorraine can be loosely compared to bands such as The Estranged, Total Control, Bellicose Minds, and The Eisinores.

19 - MIO/DUCT HEARTS - SPLIT - (7")
TIME AS A COLOR

one song each band, DUCT HEARTS (ex Wishes on a Plane) play an unbelievingly detailed and passionate 6+ minutes song with a fairly long and soft postrockish dreamy guitar introduction, when the whole band sets in you get a twinkly verse/refrain with airy, softly sung vocals that have been compared to Elliott's final album Song in the Air. When suddenly the band stops it gives space to a powerful climax, starting with clean guitars and calm and fragile yet beautiful vocals turning into thick palm muted guitars escorted by accentuated drumbeats to a desperately screamed wish for being home. they stop. they break out into a instrumental wall of sound, full of guitars and melodies, stopping again leaving you asking for more. dh have been compared to Logh, Montreal on Fire or Mineral gone postrock. MIO is a very likeable guitar/drums duo whose noisy, direct sound has been compared to (most obviously) Her Breath on Glass or Indian Summer. They combine super silent parts with very trashy, dirty outbreaks with screamed male/female vocals. You get a melodic, downbeat, screamo brooder that bursts into a harsh vocals part way through.

21 - PETTERSSON/DET AR DARFOR VI BYGGER STADE - SPLIT - (7")
TIME AS A COLOR

Pettersson play very emotional rock music. The mix of singing and screaming vocals reminds me of bands like Suis La Lune, Pianos Become The Teeth, Funeral Diner or Envy while the instrumental is worked out so well that you couldn't believe that this is recorded by only three people. Det Ar Darfor Vi Bygger Stader is a three piece band from Stockholm, Sweden who formed in 2015. they play a killer style of music that incorporates elements of post hardcore, punk, and screamo within their sound. Musically, the band can be said to be influenced by bands such as Saetia, Caetena Collapse, Daitro, La Quiete, and other like-minded bands. Since forming in 2014, Det Ar Darfor Vi Bygger Stader have released a split 7" with mat?x, a split 7" with Coma Regalia and a split 7" with Kotsuya Kaiden. On their side of the split, Det Ar Darfor Vi Bygger Stader offer one track of tense, urgent, and volatile post hardcore, screamo, and emo.

22 - PLANS FOR NOBODY - PLANS FOR NOBODY - (LP)
TIME AS A COLOR

a totally typical release for time as a color as this is a release of a long time friends music, this time from my hometown. a super untypical release though, because its totally different from most music released on this label. If this would feature a big bearded shouter it would remind me of bands like Amber, which I admire a lot, although it contains less ,Post-" in the ,Rock" and ,Metal". But this being combined witha voice that sounds like something between Paramore and Evanescence and contains influences of corporate modern rock and poppy metal. mastered at the almighty tonmeisterei, comes in full color inside out sleeves and printed inner sleeves.

24 - TERRAFORMER - MINERAL - (LP)
TIME AS A COLOR

"Mineral" opener Aegan is filled with big post-metal riffs and angular, off-kilter rhythms. Progressive but not in a head-scratching way, its also quite bleak and dark in places. I guess I shouldnt be surprised considering they share their homeland with Amenra. Theres a natural flow between Aegan and Adamantine, which means no pauses! Adamantine is a mixture of atonal riffs and glorious treble lead work. The percussion and bass just sit within the vast layers of sound, but are both still noticeable and add heft. Its really easy to lose yourself if this whole release, which is an aim that a lot of other bands dont fully achieve. Terraformer is able to create something thats really hard to aptly describe in writing with Amethyst. Its shorter length gives it more urgency yet its this constraint that really brings out their song-writing skill as a band. Its jaw-dropping. They flirt with menacing ambience at the beginning of Penelope, which is the sign of heavier things to come. Sure enough Terraformer delivers on that front with an incredibly bass-heavy tapestry of grind/crust/punk-like textures alongside their more familiar post-rock. Epoch is the release that you need after bottling up your emotions for too long. Its incredibly up-lifting. That high that you feel after Epoch stays with you through The Ether Shell, even though its on the heavier side. Its mid-section is more pop-like and the melodies are pretty hummable, flowing to a natural end via a wall of sound that fades in a sensitive way. I really feel like I should have written more about this record; however, I know that sometimes less is more.

her breath on glass / empire! empire! (i was a lonely estate) / duct hearts / bail / i found myself in austin, texas / eucalypt / your neighbour the liar / smithsonian / the rabbit theory / kids return. In 2010 time as a color started a 7" series called "leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photographs" consisting of 3 parts, called chapter I, II and III. The series was also offered as a special subscription edition in which people could order in advance and received each record individually as they were released, the subscription edition had some minor artwork differences and came with a box in the end meant to gather all 3 records. Around 72 of those subscriber boxes were made. After the completion of the series time as a color offered a slightly less elaborate box edition of 78 copies of this 3x7"", boxes feature multiple handstamping plus a small picture glued to the front and include a handstamped and numbered envelope with 3 zines which include lyrics and liner notes. all bands describe how their song deals with the overall topic ""leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photographs"", plus the third zines includes a nice little label-liner note about how the series came together and what the topic means to them. the records include 10 (mostly otherwise unreleased or rare) songs

TIME AS A COLOR

I found myself in austin, texas / bail / her breath on glass. first installment of the 7" series on time as a color. HER BREATH ON GLASS (2 people from The Saddest Landscape and The Last 40 Seconds) offer an unreleased tune, their best song for quite some time, chaotic yet melodic, passionate vocals urgently screamed over bursting, intense guitars. I FOUND MYSELF IN AUSTIN, TEXAS play some louder fiddly euro screamo while BAIL's song is a little more techy and harder to get friends with but even more worth it. it is spread over both sides of the 7" and perfectly blends the record. BAIL have been compared to Reiziger and Native Nod.

the rabbit theory / eucalypt / kids return / duct hearts. second record of the 7" series on time as a color. THE RABBIT THEORY from Switzerland play mathy indie-screamo-post-hardcore, KIDS RETURN offer their final song, a fairly poppy riff playing to desperately sung muddy mid 90ies thing reminding me of Her Breath on Glass. DUCT HEARTS show their unplugged side with an acoustic version of a song way more straight forward than the one on their split with Mio, while EUCALPYT contribute a chaotic yet chiming interpretation of the 90s to this split.
