2 - BARNETT + COLOCCIA - WELD - (LP)
BLACKEST EVER BLACK

Faith Coloccia and Alex Barnett return to Blackest Ever Black with their second duo album, Weld; working with synthesizers, affected vocals, raw electrical noise, field recordings, EVP techniques, tape manipulation and drum machines to create a music at once lucid and mystic. Its songs embody various experiential philosophies and objectives: searching for the sacred in the forgotten and supposedly useless; exploring the meaning of "natural"; listening for the pulse of the ancient; using technology both to materialise memory and to dream a folklore for a future age. Weld speaks its own distinctive dream-language, but we would certainly recommend it to anyone enamoured of the brittle sci-fi synth-scapes in Caroline K's Now Wait For Last Year, the amorphous electronics of Beatriz Ferreyra's recent work, Conrad Schnitzler's more gothic moments, and even the gravest metaphysical reckonings of a Stockhausen or a Rozmann.

4 - BERROCAL, JAC / EPPPLAY, VINCENT / FENECH, DAVID - ICE EXPOSURE - (LP)
BLACKEST EVER BLACK

Jac Berrocal, David Fenech and Vincent Epplay return with Ice Exposure, their second album for Blackest Ever Black. A sequel and companion piece of sorts to 2015's Antigravity, its title couldn't be more apt: sonically it is both colder, and more exposed - in the sense of rawer, more volatile, more vulnerable - than its predecessor, capturing the combustible energy and barely suppressed violence of the trio's celebrated live performances with aspects of noir jazz, musique concrete, no wave art-rock, sound poetry and spectral electronics all interpenetrating in unpredictable and exhilarating ways.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Opportunity 02. Car Havana Midi 03. Equivoque 04. Why 05. Lonely Woman 06. Lisiere Island 07. Salta Girls 08. Check Sound Check 09. Blanche De Blanc 10. Lower Mechanism 11. Radio Tashkent 12. Panic In Surabaya 13. Sound Check 14. Ice Exposure

5 - BREMEN - ECLIPSED - (LP)
BLACKEST EVER BLACK

A new double-LP of glacial electronics, strung-out drone-punk and smouldering space-rock minimalism from Bremen, the Swedish duo of Jonas Tiljander (Brainbombs) and Lanchy Orre (Brainbombs, Totalitar).. Tiljander's icily poised synth/organ drones and the grieving cosmic howl of Lanchy's guitar dominate the landscape, but Bremen's instrumental palette has also expanded to include various percussion treatments, saxophone, strings, dissolved vocal fragments. Their exploratory jamming, overdubbing and dub-savvy mixing yield a music of unbelievable eloquence and physicality, and Eclipsed is another masterpiece of black-hole psychedelia from one of the greatest underground rock'n'roll units on the planet.

TRACKLISTING: 01. On Board 02. Helmet 03. Cold March 04. Scorched Earth 05. Through The Barrier 06. The Art Of Non-existence 07. Universal 08. Events And Non-events 09. First Leap 10. A Stumble Not A Fall 11. A Glimpse At The Final Moment 12. Sick City 13. Lights Out 14. Soaring With The Mountains

6 - BREMEN - ENTER SILENCE - (LP)
BLACKEST EVER BLACK

"Following a trio of sprawling, planet-gargling double-LPs, 2013's self-titled LP on Skrammel, and Second Launch (2015) and Eclipsed (2017) on Blackest Ever Black, Bremen - J. Tiljander and Lanchy, previously best known for their contributions to Brainbombs' long rapsheet of genius-and-brutality, but latterly exponents of a rarefied cosmic melancholy - return with Enter Silence, their most concise, and powerful, album to date. Once again the Uppsala multi-instrumentalists combine elements of trogged-out psychedelic rock with a deadly serious Arctic minimalism and weeping modal improvisations that owe more to the outer limits of jazz and burnt-out free music from Japan.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Sinister 02. The Middle Section 03. Aimless Cruising 04. Palladium 05. Enter Silence 06. No Means To Remain 07. Too Cold For Your Eyes 08. Everything Coagulates 09. Earthbound 10. Vanishing Point

7 - DAL FORNO, CARLA - YOU KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE - (LP)
BLACKEST EVER BLACK

This is Carla dal Forno's debut solo album, following time in cult Melbourne group Mole House and an earlier association with Blackest Ever Black as a member of F ingers and Tarcar. Her voice is an extraordinary instrument: both disarmingly conversational and glacially detached. It has something of the bedsit urbanity of Anna Domino, Marine Girls, Antena, or Helen Johnstone - stoned and deadpan - but it can also summon a gothic intensity that Nico or Kendra Smith would approve of. This voice is the perfect embodiment of dal Forno's emotionally ambiguous songs: their lyrics rooted in the everyday, observing and exposing a series of uncomfortable truths.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Italian Cinema 02. Fast Moving Cars 03. Db Rip 04. What You Gonna Do Now? 05. Dry In The Rain 06. You Know What It's Like 07. Dragon Breath 08. The Same Reply

8 - DALHOUS - COMPOSITE MOODS COLLECTION VOL.1: HOUSE NUMBE - (LP)
BLACKEST EVER BLACK

House Number 44 is the first volume of The Composite Moods Collection, a new cycle of Dalhous recordings that examines the relationship between two individuals co-habiting in the same confined space - their interactions, their sense of self and of each other, and the pregnant space between. Longtime followers of Dalhous will observe that House Number 44 contains some of their sparsest, most malevolent-sounding electronic music to date (see especially the brooding synthesizer throb of 'Response To Stimuli' and 'End Of Each Analysis') but some of their most disarmingly beautiful too, with indelible melodies and atmospheres as deep as thought: 'Methods of Elan, 'On A Level', the elegiac 'Lines To Border'.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Response To Stimul 02. It Itself, Is Harmless 03. Running Sheets 04. Ecstasy As A Mask Or A Shield 05. Conscience Of Nerves 06. Research Network 07. On A Level 08. End Of Each Analysis 09. Mimetic DISC #2: 01. Content For Feelings 02. Zero Point Zero Six Per Cent 03. Implicit Use Of Abstraction 04. Statistical Order 05. Results 06. Vestibule 07. Verything They Wanted To Hear 08. Bahy-oh-feed-bak 09. Methods Of Elan 10. Lines To Border

10 - JABU - SLEEP HEAVY - (LP)
BLACKEST EVER BLACK

Debut album of broken-hearted, downtempo R&B/street-soul and supremely atmospheric, introspective electronics from Jabu: a trio comprised of vocalist/lyricists Alex Rendall and Jasmine Butt, and producer Amos Childs. It's a future Bristol classic with a universal resonance, with songs that are highly personal but deeply relatable, and tripped-out, time-dissolving sound design that both haunts and consoles.

11 - K, CAROLINE - NOW WAIT FOR THE LAST YEAR - (LP)
BLACKEST EVER BLACK

First ever vinyl reissue of Caroline K's outstanding 1985 album, Now Wait For Last Year. This haunting, wistful work of post-industrial synthesizer music - the late Nocturnal Emissions co-founder's only solo record - has accrued a fervent cult following over the past 30 years, and copies of the original pressing are today extremely sought-after. Tags like industrial, minimal synth or proto-techno can't really do justice to the richly cinematic sound-world that Walters describes: from the sustained ambient tension of sidelong opener he Happening World' to the future-primitive rhythms and stately piano flourishes of nimal Lattice', and the melancholic, deep-frozen synth sequences ofhearth'. Fans of Wendy Carlos's A Clockwork Orange, Chris Carter's The Space Between, and early Detroit techno.

13 - OSSIA - DEVIL'S DANCE - (LP)
BLACKEST EVER BLACK

Ossia is ultimately a mongrel breed, drawing from his own, very contemporary and idiosyncratic well of influences: grime, jazz, steppers, dub, post-punk and industrial abrasion, Concrete minimalism. The music pulses with energy, a fever to communicate and Raki Singh (violin), Jasmine (vocals) and Ollie Moore (saxophone) add vivid flesh-tone to the punishing, plasmic electronics. The record was mixed at an infamous, subterranean Bristolian recording studio, using an arsenal of spring and plate reverbs, modded pedals, tape-delays and compressors.

16 - SECRET BOYFRIEND - MEMORY CARE UNIT - (LP)
BLACKEST EVER BLACK

A new long-form offering of poignant, isolationist machine music from Secret Boyfriend. Eschewing the cryptic and compact song-sketches that characterised his 2013 Blackest Ever Black LP, 'This Is Always Where You've Lived', Ryan Martin instead guides us through vast interior topographies and nerve-damaged ambiences that comfort and deceive like memory itself. Beginning with 'The Singing Bile' - minimal synth submerged and subjected to an almost oceanic pressure - the tracks are mostly crude, extended live improvisations, recorded straight to tape. Martin's loose intention was to subtract himself from proceedings and "let the music play itself", but the erasure is not quite complete: on the contrary, each piece feels distinctly authored, and charged with personal significance. The atrophying loops of 'Memorize Them Well' broach the elegiac grandeur of Gas and William Basinski, while 'Paean Delle Palme' summons E.A.R., Af Ursin, and :zoviet*france:*'. The album is largely instrumental, but there are two weighty exceptions: the sprawling, drumbox-driven space blues of 'Little Jammy Centre' and the guileless yearning of 'Stripping At The Nail'. This is electronic pop undressed, unravelled and mapped onto the infinite wave.

TRACKLISTING: 01. The Singing Bile 02. Little Jammy Center 03. They're Playing Themselves 04. Paean Delle Palme 05. Stripping At The Nail 06. Memorize Them Well

17 - SEKUNDENSCHLAF - SEKUNDENSCHLAF - (LP)
BLACKEST EVER BLACK

Sleep-deprived, breakbeat-driven vignettes of unclear authorship, from somewhere west of Lake Lagoda, near the Russia-Finland border. Sekundenschlaf has significant points of correspondence with contemporary European electronic music, as well as the golden age of (early) jungle and ambient techno. But its response to tradition, and to the zeitgeist, is idiosyncratic to say the least - with an atmosphere and psychogeography rooted in the tranquility and majesty of Western Russian nature, and the anxiety and distress of the country's post-Soviet working class. Pastoral calm meets dissonance and unease. The music has a loose, improvised feel, but its arrangements are intricate, its melodies iridescent: cascading arpeggios that stir a sense of optimism and renewal, sighing string-pads that evoke the deepest melancholy. Rhythms simultaneously hyped-up and burned-out, collapsing in on themselves as they race to destinations unknown. All bound together with field recordings of eavesdropped conversations, blurred into abstraction, a droning subliminal menace.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Catching Rare Birds 02. The Grand Pacific Garbage Patch 03. Walking Distances 04. Quicksand 05. Matted Feathers 06. Pacifier Habits 07. Are You Still Hurt
