1 - DELEYAMAN - 00/1 - (CD)
TTO

Swedish/French/Armenian American collective Deleyaman claim The Stranglers, Wire and Joy Division among their influences, not that youll hear any of that on this remarkable debut. Instead, there are rich spirituality inspired eastern chants, and the baroque stylings of Handel and Bach; none of which sounds very appealing on paper. In the flesh though, its like entering a time warp and emerging at a time when true alternative music was being shaped in the hands of Transglobal Underground, Dead Can Dance and Cocteau Twins. As a result 00/1 refines the template roughly sketched by Enigma, imbuing it with a depth and beauty matched only by recent efforts from Natacha Atlas. Not that they limit themselves to purely Eastern stylings; Almast adds a rich layer of pastoral folk in The Wicker Man tradition - bringing the welcome memory of Britt Ekland dancing naked in her bedroom. Irresistible.

2 - DELEYAMAN - FOURTH, PART ONE - (CD)
TTO

Deleyaman are a four piece french-american band based in Normandy, France. This is a diverse group of musicians and each adds his/her own style to the band's sound. The music on Fourth, Part One has been described as darkwave. This is mellow stuff blending ambient, folk, Eastern and classical elements. The band definitely takes a minimalistic approach to songwriting and they are very good at what they do. The album has a nice flow with most of the songs having soft layers of keyboards, introspective guitar and soft percussions giving this music an ethereal quality. The addition of the duduk, a traditional woodwind instrument of Armenian origin, adds an exotic touch to many of these songs. The duduk has been around for hundreds of years and its ancient and mournful sound permeates the music of Deleyaman. The vocals of Valantin are quite pleasant as her angelic voice has a fragile beauty and contrasts nicely with the deeper mournful voice of Aret Madilian. Both voices are ideally suited for the band's pastoral style of music.Whether it's the short and somber "Somehow" with the duduk providing an Indian motif or the dreamy soundscapes of "Book Of Change", the heavier sounding "Temples" boasting fuzzy psychedelic guitar riffs or the moody "Traffic Lights" where the exotic sounds of the duduk and the lovely acoustic guitar intermingling with the brooding vocals of Madilian, the songs of this album should be listened to uninterrupted from beginning to end. Music in the vein of bands like Dead Can Dance or Enigma. If you need an album to chill out to this may be the one.

3 - DELEYAMAN - FOURTH, PART TWO - (CD)
TTO

The sister release to 2009's Fourth, Part One sees DELEYAMAN incorporating a second full-time guitarist into their line-up. And the new member certainly brings a new dimension to this peculiar band, by adding and expanding on the elements of post-rock/shoegaze that had already been hinted at on previous recordings. DELEYAMANs singular style, which blends darkwave and alternative folk into one, collects and re-invents elements from different genres into an artistic vision which feeds as much from literature as it does from avant-garde experimentation and ethereal music. The new album portrays the band as introspective as ever, with the use of poetry taking on a prominent role, as the voices of Beatrice and Aret weave closely into the music to provide each word with its appropriate setting and mood.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Change Things 02. Three Islands 03. Let The Wind Blow 04. Brahma 05. Sunset 06. Somewhere 07. Owl 08. Sweet Space 09. North Winds 10. September Song 11. Perhaps

4 - DELEYAMAN - THE EDGE - (CD)
TTO

The 6th album of Deleyaman may very well be the most important and accessible one in the band's rich and unique discography. On this album, one can hear the influences and musical references of Aret Madilian, the founder and frontman of Deleyaman. It is still difficult to categorize Deleyaman into a single genre but this album is most definitely in the alternative spectrum with touches of melodic post-punk, darkwave and coldwave. The bass is nicely upfront with a JJ Burnel (The Stranglers) type of attitude/sound on a few of the tracks. The timeless quality of their compositions is a constant and the vocals of Madilian and Valantin come together beautifully reminding us at times of Leonard Cohen with Jennifer Warnes. Though "The Edge" is by no means an 80's nostalgia album, the chorus and delay drenched guitars on some songs, are sometimes reminiscing of the sound of certain bands from that era (The Chameleons, The Cocteau Twins). The lyrics on the tracks which have all been written by Aret Madilian are to the point and intriguing, evoking contemporary issues as on the title "Hey Now". Two of the tracks on the album, "Murdered Days" and "Juillet" surprise the listener with french lyrics. They are mysteriously sang by Beatrice Valantin, the french female voice of Deleyaman. Gerard Madilian who plays the ancient and unusual instrument called the duduk in the band, reveals the magnificence of its haunting sound perfectly on the tracks "Castles in the Sand" and "Thousand Days".This 52 minute, 13 track album is a pleasure for the ears and profound for the soul.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Moon 02. Murdered Days 03. Hey Now 04. Castles In The Sand 05. Mental Horizon 06. Weight Of Things 07. Softly 08. Ethereal Dances 09. Thousand Days 10. Cygnus 11. Juillet 12. Beatrice1 13. Outspoken
