1 - CARBO, CLAUDE & HANK - FOX IN A MINI SKIRT - (7")
ROCAFORT

Another foot-stomping bonanza from Rocafort Records, digging deep into the rich New Orleans repertoire of the Carbo family. All brothers were heavily involved in the '60s Crescent City funk scene, so tight and 'on the one' that it's easy to understand why Hank suspects a bit of plagiarism from the Godfather himself. 'Fox In A Mini Skirt' is a slice of soulful cheek and attitude and 'Bad Luck' (not to be confused with the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes classic) is a slower paced funk stinker, screaming out JB horns and wah wah guitars la 'Ain't It Funky Now'.

2 - COOPER, ANDY - THE LAYERED EFFECT - (LP)
ROCAFORT

'The Layered Effect' by US rapper/producer Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) offers a punchy reminder of the creative fun to be had in digging for breaks, stringing up loops and layering up stratas of sound. Brimming full of delightful inflexions from the world of jazz, easy listening, film soundtracks and Hollywood voices, it's a perfectly stitched sound patchwork that pays loving hommage to the classic, funky days of early rap. A touching testimony to the joys of hip-hop then and now.

3 - GARTRELL, DELIA - I MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT - (7")
ROCAFORT

Another 1960s soul gem, unearthed and held up to the light. The mid-tempo stomper 'I Must Be Doing Something Right' is an irresistible sassy classic, originally the B-Side of the single 'If You Got What It Takes (They Can't Take What You Got)' which was released on Maverick Records. 'Fight Fire With Fire' boasts a similar production style, but this time with a prominent electric guitar riff, emotive strings and heavenly backing vocals. A must for all 7-inch soul collectors.

4 - JONES, BOBBY - WELCOME BACK A FOOLISH MAN - (7")
ROCAFORT

Originally released in 1970 on the amusingly named Kack label, soulman Bobby Jones assures us that there's nothing but the smell of sweet soul music happening here. Written and produced by well-known Chicago music veteran Maurice Lee Simpkins, 'Welcome Back A Foolish Man' does everything an early '70s mid-tempo two-stepper should. Urgent, pleading lyrics telling of unspeakable heartache, sweeping strings, twangy guitars, heavenly backing vocals that lift everything towards the Gods. All solidly crowned by the raw, expressive vocal talent of Bobby Jones, a consistantly worthy bluesy/soul singer who never really got the recognition he deserved.

6 - LIVING COLOR - PLASTIC PEOPLE - (7")
ROCAFORT

Not to be confused with the 80s heavy rock/funk band from the US, this Living Color track was written, produced and released by Tony Kalangis on his Sophisticated Funk label in 1974. Kalangis, who sadly passed away in 2017, was a man of many talents who could not only write a great tune but also novels, poems, and film scripts.

7 - MARIN, BOBBY - MOVIN' MUCH TOO FAST/MR. SKYJACKER - (7")
ROCAFORT

Reissue of a late '60s soul/funk/Latin gem on 7-inch. "I signed a recording contract with Speed Records in 1967 and was asked by producer Morty Craft to create my own album in my own style, so I decided to write and arrange one of the compositions ala James Brown, one of my favorite artists from that era. But the problem was the musical arrangement. I had never learned how to write musical arrangement, so I read books, asked a lot of questions and pretty much learned how to write and transpose music for studio musicians in a couple of weeks. I also decided to sing the song on the recording as well; though I would never dream of having the audacity to compare myself to Mr. Brown in any way. When it came to the arrangement, I wrote the score and showed it to my friend, the multi-talented Louie Ramirez. He made a few corrections and we were ready to record 'Movin' Much Too Fast'. I called some good musicians for the session including the famous drummer, Bernard Purdie, and of course, Louie Ramirez. When we finished recording and after I had re-mixed the tracks with studio engineer, Jon Fausty, we were all elated with the final outcome. I don't know exactly how I pulled it off but after listening to the final product, I was pretty satisfied. 'Mr. Skyjacker' was recorded during the time that planes were being diverted to Cuba from the US. I composed, produced and sang the song." ~Bobby Marin, October 2013.

9 - ONDENO - MAYOLYE - (12")
ROCAFORT

20 year old Jean Ondeno from Gabon is one of many African singers who found joy in the Parisian Afro-disco scene of the late '70s. Blessed with the voice of Africa's sweetest angel, Ondeno caught the ear of the French radio presenter Alphonse Marie Toukas who in turn introduced him to producer Philippe Brejean. Together they released 4 tracks, of which 'Mayolye' has become a sought-after dance floor rarity over the decades. Containing all the essential ingredients of any Afro-disco floorfiller, 'Mayolye' seduces sweetly, rhythmically and fast, with the percussion and wah-wah guitar on full throttle, and vocals insistently hypnotic from start to finish. For this special 12 inch release, Rocafort Records have grouped the original version alongside a Nik Weston Official Mukatsuku edit.

11 - RAIL BAND - SEX MACHINE/MASSARE MOUSSO - (7")
ROCAFORT

Rail Band's music became the exciting soundtrack of modern Mali, blossoming like a big bright bouquet of tropical flowers. In its heyday, the orchestra pretty much defined by itself the idea of afro-pop. Musicians such as singer Salif Keita, singer Mory Kante, guitar player Djelimady Tounkara and the late bandleader and sax player Tidiani Kone all graduated from the Rail Band before turning to more or less successful solo careers. The Rail Band got started in October 1969 as a regular orchestra in the railway station premises. Directly inspired by James Brown's funk achievements, 'Sex Machine' belongs to the band's legend, an incredible cover which is both heroic and mesmerizing. It is a pure slice of raw and spicy Malian funk, one of those "straight to your face" songs with a devastating outcome, courtesy of Mamadou Bagayoko's heavy drums and Cheick's Traore sturdy guitar bass playing. Alfred Coulibaly's vox organ adds up to the hypnotic mood of the song.
