1 - TALLEY, JAMES - GOT NO BREAD, NO MONEY, BUT WE SURE GOT A LOT OF LOVE - (CD)
CIMARRON

This Oklahoma songwriter's 1975 Capitol LP was too rural and honky-tonk to be a hit, but it scored big with critics and is a stunning debut reissued with a bonus interview CD. The album stands as a monument to heart, modesty and nuance. An unvarnished wonder steeped in the music of Woody Guthrie, Bob Wills and Merle Haggard, Talley's record was a "quietly proud album (which) evokes a time and place and a way of life like very little other music before or since." as John Morthland wrote in No Depression. Pete Seeger had told him to write about the world he knew, and so he did. The sound and spirit wasn't nostalgic; Talley's western memories were real and rich with promise.

5 - TALLEY, JAMES - NASHVILLE CITY BLUES - (CD)
CIMARRON

This seductive, insightful & rootsy album of country blues was recorded by James Tally in 1988. At the time, USA Today wrote "The title track is more than the blistering three-chord rant it appears to be on its surface. Ultimately, it's less about bitterness - 'They've taken all the music and they've watered it down' - than the importance of perseverance and the inevitability of disappointment. Other songs touch on these themes from more personal and romantic perspectives. Displaying a no-frills sound that answers to no expectations but his own, Talley's songs get straight to the point without being simplistic". Country Standard Time said "Talley has the same expressive flatness that marks the work of John Prine, Hoyt Axton and David Olney; still, there is a warmth and comfort in his songs and presentation, and he's more than paid his dues on his way here."

TRACKLISTING: 01. Nashville City Blues 02. Down On The Corner 03. Dont You Feel Let Down 04. Rough Edge 05. Baby Needs Some Good Times 06. Streamline Flyer 07. When I Need Some Love 08. If It Wasnt For The Blues 09. You Cant Get There From Here 10. So Im Not The Only One 11. House Right Down The Road 12. Workin For Wages 13. Ive Seen The Bear
