1 - WRAY, LINK - ACE OF SPADES - (L+C)
VIP VOP

It's been said that Link invented the power chord but this righteous accolade doesn't convey the distorted, stripped down excitement of his craft. The flash point was "rumble', released in 1958. Link was never better than when he tapped into delinquent themes. It doesn't matter whether this was innate or via creative osmosis, the result was the same; the stark distillation of rebellion. It got you in the hips and the soul. Despite being banned on several US radio stations for fear of stirring up youthful unrest and boosting gang membership, Rumble' went on to be a million seller. However, Cadence Records, who had signed Link and his brothers, Vernon and Doug, a.k.a 'The W/Ray Men', chickened out of releasing any further rabble rousing tracks. When the label suggested that Link tone it down, The Wray's took a stroll to Epic and continued a run of exhilarating instrumentals including "Rawhide", "Comanche" and "Slinky". Whilst having contracted tuberculosis when serving in the Korean war affected Wray's vocals, his guitar playing mostly did the singing for him but he wasn't always volatile, "Lillian" and "Alone" revealing the heart beneath the tough exterior.

4 - WRAY, LINK - LINK WRAY - (LP)
FUTURE DAYS

Recorded in a shaky makeshift chicken shack in rural Maryland, Link Wrays eponymous 1971 solo album is a compelling and forward-looking piece of honest, handmade Americana. This album is vastly different from his previous work, foregoing instrumentals entirely. Instead, Wray, left with only one lung following a bout with tuberculosis in 1956, gives us his raw voice, full of spit and vinegar, as he blends elements of country, rock n roll, roots, folk and gospel marked with fuzzy guitar and booming percussion. He kicks off with a track, "La De Da", that may be the greatest song the Stones never wrote. Elsewhere, the single "Fallin Rain" channels Dylan at his most political, with lyrics about "stabbings and shootings and young men dying all around." Link Wray proved to be the only album that the guitarist issued in his own name to hit the American charts during his nearly 50-year recording career. Although it didnt receive much critical acclaim at the time of its release, Link Wray has seen a resurgence in recent years and developed a cult following, with artists from Nick Cave to The Neville Brothers recording versions of its tracks.

TRACKLISTING: 01. La De Da 02. Take Me Home Jesus 03. Juke Box Mama 04. Rise And Fall Of Jimmy Stokes 05. Fallin' Rain 06. Fire And Brimstone 07. Ice People 08. God Out West 09. Crowbar 10. Black River Swamp 11. Tail Dragger

5 - WRAY, LINK - LINK WRAY & THE WRAYMEN - (CD)
HALLMARK

Link Wray may have made only minimal impact on the charts yet his style and influence knows no boundaries, with the likes of Pete Townsend (of The Who), Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page all citinghim as an inspiration during their own formative years. His eponymous album, originally released on Epic in 1960, is something of a mixed bag collection. It containsthe blistering rock and roll that had heralded his sudden arrival, thanks here to the hit Rawhide, yet also has tofeature the watered down version as demanded by the label chiefs. On the strength of Rawhide alone, one canbut wonder how strong an album Link Wray might have produced left to his own devices.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Caroline 02. Slinky 03. Right Turn 04. Rendezvous 05. Dixie Doodle 06. Ramble 07. Hand Clapper 08. Raw Hide 09. Lillian 10. Radar 11. Comanche 12. Studio Blues

TIDAL WAVES MUSIC

1972 album, back on vinyl for the first time since 1972 !Fred Lincoln Link Wray, Jr. (1929-2005) born of Shawnee Native American parents was an American rock and roll guitarist, songwriter and vocalist who became popular in the late 1950s. Building on the distorted electric guitar sound of early records, his 1958 instrumental hit "Rumble" (banned in New York and Boston for fear it would incite teenage gang violence) popularized "the power chord" which laid the foundation to modern rock music.
