1 - EVANS, BILL -TRIO- - AT SHELLY'S MANNE-HOLE - (LP)
DOXY

Limited first press of 500 numbered copies. Audiophile Clear Vinyl (ACV), 140 gr.At Shellys Manne-Hole is a live album by American jazz pianist Bill Evans, released in 1963 as his last recording for the Riverside label. The trio featured Chuck Israels, who followed Scott LaFaro on bass in autumn 1961 and Larry Bunker on drums, who just joined the reformed trio, after Paul Motian had left. "(...)The leadoff track, "Isnt It Romantic," is one of Evans finest moments, with the gently swinging theme leading into a strong, if restrained, solo from Israels. Over Bunkers sensitive brush work, Evans comments briefly and beautifully on the theme before returning to the head. The bands readings of such classics as "Round Midnight," "Stella By Starlight" and "All the Things You Are" are wonderful, but it is the lesser-known tracks, such as "Swedish Pastry" and the aforementioned "Isnt It Romantic" that makes this recording so valuable. Jazz is rarely as sensitive or as melodic as this. Another classic from Bill Evans and company"(AllMusic)

2 - EVANS, BILL -TRIO- - MOON BEAMS - (CD)
HALLMARK

The original Bill Evans Trio, featuring Bill on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums, was on the verge of greatness whentragedy struck. In July 1961 LaFaro was killed in a car accident, an event that took an enormous emotional toll on Evans, who withdrew fromall work for nearly a year as he struggled to come to terms with the loss of his musical counterpart. When he eventually reconvened in the studio in May 1962 with Chuck Israels as a replacement bassist, it was to record Moon Beams, something of a ballad collection. It has been said that there was a certain irony in recording such a collection; the material is so natural for BillEvans, particularly with his trademark impressionistic sound collage style, yet he had never sounded quite so assertive on a recording. It wasalmost as though that with the loss of LaFaro and an obvious counterpoint within the group, Evans now had to lead the trio on his own.One thing Bill Evans had done ever since he departed Miles Davis group in order to form his own trio was choose superb material, and MoonBeams is no exception. His own compositions both open and close the album, with Re: The Person I Knew, which might appear to an homageto LaFaro but is in fact an anagram of the name of the albums producer (Orrin Keepnews, although with a switch in tense to know ratherthan knew) being joined by Very Early, something of a waltz. No doubt a difficult album for Bill Evans to record, in light of LaFaros untimely death, Moon Beams was a startling return to recording and amajor advancement in his development as a leader.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Re: Person I Knew 02. Polka Dots And Moonbeams 03. I Fall In Love To Easily 04. Stairway To The Stars 05. If You Could See Me Now 06. It Might As Well Be Spring 07. In Love In Vain 08. Very Early

3 - EVANS, BILL -TRIO- - PORTRAIT IN JAZZ - (CD)
HALLMARK

One of the most innovative and influential pianists in jazz music history, Bill Evans recorded a host of albums thatcould lay claim to being trail-blazing. Portrait In Jazz is one such album, the first of two studio albums he was torecord with his trio (alongside Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian) and a delight from start to finish.Whilst much of the material is comprised of standards, the trios interpretations are neither routine nor predictable.Instead, there is constant interplay between the piano and bass, producing a unique outing that is both subtle andcreative.

4 - EVANS, BILL -TRIO- - WALTZ FOR DEBBY - (CD)
HALLMARK

Featuring Bill Evans first trio (Bill on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums), Waltz For Debbywas an album that hinted at future greatness for all three musicians. That the trio never quite achieved that levelis entirely down to the tragic death of LaFaro in a car accident some ten days after the recording. There is much to enjoy here, however, from the original title song to the trios excellent interpretations of standardsMy Romance and Some Other Time and a take on Miles Davis Milestones. The overall style on this album isa unified group and as such is perhaps the best recording the trio ever made.
