While many of his earlier sides featured only Hooker on guitar and vocals, his Vee-Jay sides feature a full rocking rhythm section. 4 - HOOKER, JOHN LEE - BURNIN' - (LP)
CHARLY

Charly pays JOHN LEE HOOKER's "Burnin'", the classic Vee Jay album from 1962, its long overdue honours and gives it the re-release treatment. "Burnin'" is easily one of best records next to "It Serves You Right To Suffer" and "I'm John Lee Hooker" that the blues master has recorded with a backing band without sacrificing his characteristic, monotonous beat. Along with an absolutely awe-inspiring version of the LEROY CARR track "Blues Before Sunrise" stands the indestructible "Boom, Boom" - here buffed up by Joe Hunter's piano - which became the unofficial anthem of British Invasion bands like ANIMALS&THEM. The eleven remastered analogue tracks of the original are here accompanied by five ultra rare bonus tracks. 180gr vinyl in a heavy duty cover with an updated, authentic version of the original artwork.

6 - HOOKER, JOHN LEE - BURNING HELL - (LP)
RUMBLE

Blues legend John Lee Hooker cut countless records beginning with his debut for Modern in 1948 and going some 50+ years until his death in 2001. With such a vast discography it can be easy to lose track of some records and Burning Hell, recorded in Detroit in 1959 with just his guitar and vocals, is one such lost record. But this album deserves so much to be rediscovered, a brilliant set from his "acoustic" period this is raw southern acoustic blues at its best and a truly brilliant collection of songs. Rumble is pleased to bring this lost classic back to light on LP.

7 - HOOKER, JOHN LEE - HOUSE OF BLUES - (CD)
HALLMARK

One of the truly great blues artists, John Lee Hooker enjoyed a successful career of nearly sixty years in duration, including a spell towards the latter part of the twentieth century when he was considered the greatest of theera. Times may have changed during the course of his career but John Lee Hooker didnt, with his overall soundremaining constant. Indeed, the recordings he made during the latter stage of his career invoked images of theearlier part of his career, retaining much the same song structure throughout, albeit with subtle amendments. This particular album focuses on a brief, three year spell between 1951 and 1954. The material was originallyrecorded for the Chess Records label and was finally gathered together for release in album form in 1959 andsubsequently issued in the UK in 1964. Since the material covers a three year period there is no theme, but muchthe same argument could be levelled at just about any blues artist of the time. Instead, this album serves to showcasehis undoubted talents as a performer and as a writer.

18 - HOOKER, JOHN LEE - THE MAN OF THE BLUES 48-59 - (LP)
DOXY

After years spent traveling and playing music across the South, towards the end of WWII, Hooker, like so many other Delta-born bluesmen, ended up in Detroit. After a few years spent rising up through the ranks of the legendary Hastings Street scene and purchasing his first electric guitar, in 1948 the 31-year-old blues guitarist finally got his first big break. With the help of agent Bernie Besman, and L.A.'s Modern Records, Hooker's first single "Boogie Chillen", unexpectedly went to the top of the R&B charts. The next few years, documented in this album, were a whirlwind of hits for Hooker, who often hopped from label to label whenever the opportunity arose, changing his name to escape contracts, before finally ending up at Vee-Jay in 1955. And the hits piled up. Throughout the fifties, Hooker spread his own brand of raw, foot-stomping Delta blues across America, and the world, becoming one of the most idolized and imitated musicians in the history of blues, and paving the way for the blues-based rock & roll explosion of the 1960s.
