Andreas Willers, a guitarist armed with electric guitar, effects pedals and rather unusual aids such as a so-called alligator clip (musical idea from the hardware store) that is attached to guitar strings to create interesting noises. Urs Leimgruber, a saxophonist with tenor and soprano sax, instruments, where percussive clanging of the keys and gurgling of condensed water are put to use together with conventional tone production. Both musicians are letting moments happen; carefully moving towards each other with soft notes; and are intensely listening to what the other is doing.Fragile shapes of sound, spontaneously crafted in the scent of the wood dust in a workshop of fantasy: the entirely uniquepoetry of a musical encounter. Andreas Willers and Urs Leimgruber: a truely sharp-eared meeting.

For a Western trained musician, four of the five elements that comprise music are easily accessiblemelody, harmony, color and form. The element of rhythm has yielded jazz and its offshoots of pop, funk, etc. as well as intricate mixtures of meter from the contemporary classical composers (Stravinsky, Schoenberg, etc.), but it is in other parts of the world where the idea of ,groove" has been explored in all its manifestations for thousands of years. lt is in lndia and to some degree parts of Africa and the Slavic cultures where the most sophisticated aspects of this area of rhythm have been developed. For amusician like myself to play in this context is ALWAYS challenging and a learning experience. I have to really check myself, asking basic questions like ,where is the one (first beat)" or more precisely ,what meter are we in?"Ravy Magnifique, coming from a very unique part of lndia (Pondicherry) is an expert in rhythm and has as well incorporated jazz and pop beats into his vast base of knowledge. I recognized his talent when we did a project of his compositions playing some difficult (for me) odd metered music. I suggested that he and I play duo, admittedly so I could learn more from him. The music on this recording was completely improvised, usually beginning with a rhythm and texture that Ravy would play for me. He used all kinds of instruments from African kalimbas to Indian percussion instruments to the normal jazz trap drums with vocalizations as well. This music represents a visit for me to another world which is fullof beauty, sincerity and spirituality. Thanks to Ravy for the opportunity to learn and commune; to Cathy for her assistance and to Roger for the excellent sound.

Don't think of the pink elephant! One is aware of this phenomenon, the 'pink elephant effect': If one makes an effort not to think of it, he will undoubtedly appear in one's head. This 'ban to think' is doomed to fail. Whenever we play this tune, he immediately pops up in my head. He looks a bit like Dumbo - a surreal, friendly free jazz-elephant, transparent like a soap bubble, happily hooting about, sporting big ears. And he can fly. In a multi-dimensional space a pink elephant is dancing along to Happy Vamping. Unexpectedly finding himself on Earth in the middle of the Ruhr area and in the midst of his Eigene Tat, he would much rather be a cube, sitting in the Berlin Tiergarten and at least enjoying 'Einweinfrei'.
