61 - DANNY & THE DARLEANS - BUG OUT - (CD)
IN THE RED

As one-third of The Gories, singer/guitarist Danny Kroha cemented himself in rock history for his contributions to a groundbreaking and influential band. In between the Gories 1992 breakup and their soft return in 2009, Kroha fronted Danny & the Darleans (amongst other projects), centering around his feral howls and masterful guitar clanging.Bug Out, their sophomore album, refines some of the savage bombast of the Gories while ditching almost all of the glam camp of Krohas other long-running act, the Demolition Doll Rods. Backed by fireball drummer Richie Wohlfeil (Detroit Cobras, Mother Whale, Saturday Looks Good to Me, and many others) and bassist Colleen Burke (once keyboardist for Chicago art-punks We Regazzi), theyre something of a party band. The tunes are often lighthearted, fun, and rowdy, but there is also an undercurrent of science fiction dread. Apocalyptic party rock makes sense from a trio of Detroit shadow dwellers, and the good times are never too far from the hard times over the course of this mono masterpiece..

62 - DAVILA 666 - DAVILA 666 - (CD)
IN THE RED

"Davila is a living homage to the sex, drugs, and good times of rock n roll we all idolize." Their sound is the combination of obvious rock n roll classics like the Stones, Stooges, Velvets, and Dolls, along with less likely influences such as Mazzy Star, Lil Wayne, and Plan B. "We are like Menudo (the group-notthe soup) on lots of drugs," says Carlitos.

71 - DES DEMONAS - DES DEMONAS - (LP)
IN THE RED

"The South will never rise again," Jacky Cougar Abok intones in a manner that suggests he is looking straight into your eyeballs while singing the opening track on Des Demonas debut album on In The Red Records. His hand may be around your neck as well! Sounding like The Last Poets acid tripping to 60s Sunset Strip, the band drags you on a wild ride of fuzzy guitars and swirling Farfisa organ, while the bass and drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain. And thats just the first song! The band hails from Washington, DC, and have been denizens of the byways and highways of the citys musical underground for years. Jacky Cougar Abok is the six-foot-five-inch tall Kenyan punk singer who has drummed with Thee Lolitas and Foul Swoops. Guitarist Mark Cisneros has bent strings with Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds, Deathfix, and Medications, and has pounded the traps for The Make-Up and Benjy Ferree, the latter alongside organist Paul Vivari. Joe Halladay (Citygoats) on bass and Ryan Hicks (Suns Of Guns) on drums round out this squared circle of sight and sound. The songs on this album range from Nuggets-style snottiness on "Tuff Turf," to the brash warnings of "Liez" ("Lies. only seem to matter if you never wise up"), to the stomper "Psychedelic Soldier" and cool psycho creeper "Say You Tried," to the hard boiled 70s punk of Swahili-sung "Golden Eggs." When Abok sings "There are no vampires in Africa," it may be a warning. It may be a fact. Or it may be a whole lot of unrelenting scuzzy fun. Dig the Des Demonas. Play it loud. Twist your wig.

TRACKLISTING: 01. The South Will Never Rise Again 02. Tuff Turf 03. Liez 04. Sideways Man 05. There Are No Vampires In Africa 06. Psychedelic Soldier 07. Brown Rooster 08. Do No Wrong 09. Say You Tried 10. Golden Eggs 11. Teen Stooge

75 - DIRTBOMBS - OOEY GOOEY CHEWY KA-BLOOEY! - (CD)
IN THE RED

For about a decade now, Dirtbombs frontman Mick Collins has threatened that the bands next release would be their "bubblegum album." After a couple of records of mostly originals, a compilation of singles and an album of Detroit techno covers, one might have suspected that the concept either fell by the wayside or was a farce to begin with. Well, at long last, here is Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-Blooey. Its understandable to assume that a bubblegum record by The Dirtbombs would be cover versions by groups like the 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Ohio Express and The Archies. After all, the band already has two albums of cover songs under their belt which salute specific genres. That is not the case in this instance. Mick Collins wrote ten new tracks which pay homage to the sound and style originally popularized in the late 60s / early 70s by producers / exploiters like Kasenetz-Katz and Don Kirschner. While the usual Dirtbombs double-drums, fuzzy guitars and soulful swagger are present, Ooey Gooey is sugary, sunshiny pop rock that recalls Josie & the Pussycats, the Banana Splits and Lancelot Link & the Evolution Revolution, to name but three. Its all sing-along choruses, childlike themes and a contrived innocence-not the kind of record one wouldve predicted from a guy who once fronted The Gories. The original bubblegum music was a cash-in produced on an assembly-line using studio musicians and hired songwriters, who dashed out the stuff as quickly as possible and most likely forgot about it even quicker. While The Dirtbombs adhere to some of this original approach by using a list of guest musicians so long there wasnt room to credit them on the album cover, Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-Blooey is actually a carefully crafted work almost two years in the making..

77 - DIRTBOMBS - PARTY STORE - (CD)
IN THE RED

Nearly ten years after their critically-acclaimed album Ultraglide in Black helped kick-start a renewed interest in all things Detroit and rock n roll, The Dirtbombs release the de facto companion piece entitled Party Store. Where Ultraglide was a covers collection of 60s and 70s soul gems centered on the ideas of African-American identity and politics of the era that made an impression on a young, pre-musical Mick Collins as he listened to them on 45s in the family basement, Party Store is an assortment of live-band interpretations of classic Detroit techno music of the 80s and early 90s-songs Collins digested as they were originally released, when he was already making waves with garage-punk legends The Gories.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Cosmic Cars 02. Sharivari 03. Good Life (basement Roots Mix) 04. Strings Of Life 05. Alleys Of Your Mind 06. Bug In The Bass Bin 07. Jaguar 08. Tear The Club Up 09. ? ????-??? (detoroito Mix)

82 - DOUBLE (THE) - DAWN OF THE DOUBLE - (LP)
IN THE RED

Can you dance and meditate at the same time? Talking to one of The Double before a Brooklyn gig in the summer of 2014, I was told they were going to play a "dance piece." I wasnt sure how to take that, but it slowly began to make sense as I watched their stunning set. The music struck an odd balance between perpetual motion and perpetual stasis: the drummer, Jim White (Dirty Three, Venom P Stinger), maintained a modified Bo Diddley beat, switching between the snare and the toms after long stretches on each, while the guitarist, Emmett Kelly (Cairo Gang, Ty Segall & the Muggers), stuck steadfastly to an E chord. They took the underpinning of countless rock n roll songs-the rhythm section-and decisively moved it to the foreground. It soon became clear that this wasnt going to be the average concert of discrete songs or pieces-so the question then became how long they would sustain the groove for. The answer turned out to be 45 entrancing minutes. Maybe it could be likened to Rhys Chathams "Guitar Trio," which also puts a rock n roll backbeat to a droning, solitary chord, but The Doubles vision of rock minimalism is more tied to both rock rhythm guitar and the drums more traditional role in rocks invitation to dance. And unlike "Guitar Trio" (or the 90s techno genre Trance, for that matter), The Double didnt build up notes and rhythms until a breakdown section where the process started all over again; they went into it full bore and never let up. Many moons later I heard the studio recording of the same piece, i.e. this album. This time I knew what to expect from The Double, but naturally a recording has a different effect. The quasi-mono mix draws the guitar and drums together into one sonic forcefield. The open high E and B strings on the guitar ring out virtually the entire time, generating harmonics that fill out the sound and sometimes almost indicate another instrument (there are a couple of instances where the guitar sounds like both the organ and the rhythm guitar on the Velvet Undergrounds "Sister Ray"). The piece doesnt end so much as just stop; a final revelation comes in the last few seconds with the sound of the guitar amps reverb unit-which hadnt been noticeable up until then-settling down with a shudder after they finish. The Doubles music is surely not cerebral, but with only two instruments, no vocals, no real modulations, and no production tricks, the mind does tend to wander if youre sitting and listening to it. What happens if you dance to it? Then the beat is winding you up, and it clears your head-much like meditating, ironically, which is also associated with being seated and physically still. Maybe you have to see The Double live to fully appreciate what they do, maybe you have to dance to their music in order to fulfill its true intent.or maybe this album is a definitive statement of what theyre all about. The Doubles music is both mesmerizing and propelling, allowing for potential mental and physical stimulation. These guys eradicate the proverbial mind-body split with little more than strings, sticks and skins. -Alan Licht.

83 - DUM DUM BOYS - LET THERE BE NOISE - (LP)
IN THE RED

"Often obscured by the ascent of Flying Nuns legendary roster is New Zealands late 1970s / early 1980s punk scene. Based in Auckland, a cadre of acts influenced by The Ramones and Stooges briefly thrived. The Dum Dum Boys-the first NZ punk band to record and release a full-length in their native country-were hooked on the Ann Arbor sounds of Iggy Pop. "The Dum Dum Boys Let There Be Noise (1981) is chock-full of James Williamson and Deniz Tek riffage; it also contains elements of Iggy Pops nihilism. Take the lyrics to "Something To Say"-its refrain repeatedly asking What am I living for?-and juxtapose them to the bands namesake track from Pops The Idiot (1977): What happened to Zeke? Hes dead on jones, man. Stalking The Streets taps into the meaninglessness of James Taylor and Dennis Wilsons Two-Lane Blacktop journey through the American Southwest. "The Dum Dum Boys understood the proto-punk sounds of 1970s Ann Arbor and Cleveland. More importantly, they also got the vibe. Life stinks-sometimes in the places (Auckland) youd least expect it. "As the title suggests, Let There Be Noise is anything but a record incessantly focused on introspective doom and gloom. Dont Be A Bitch rivals Radio Birdmans I-94 for lyrical thick-headedness-like sticking a hot 454 in a Ford Falcon gasser, the songs simultaneously awesome and dumb. Thats a difficult balance to strike. "Let There Be Noise (1981) was self-released and copies quickly became damn near unobtanium, even in New Zealand. (I should know: I lived there.) In The Red has performed a major service by reissuing this obscure and outstanding record. Independent New Zealand releases from the early 1980s didnt get their due; distribution out of the country was essentially non-existent. Its nice to see that finally getting corrected."

"This self-titled debut album from rigid Melbourne, Australia, punks Eastlink is the best full-length to come from Down Under since. well, since the last really incredible release on Aarght!, RIP Society, Homeless or any of the other countless many fantastic new labels that have appeared from that country over the past few years. For those paying attention, its hard to not be blown away by the amount of amazing records coming out of Australia lately. This album is no exception and stands near the top of the heap. "Eastlink features members from a variety of bands you already love like Total Control, UV Race, Repairs, Lakes and Straightjacket Nation, just to name a few. With four guitars, one drum and two vocalists, they splinter and drench two-note monotonic riffs the rest of us never noticed were right under our noses the whole time. These nine tracks range from harsh, crude, fuzzed-out one-note pounders to droning soundscapes. "Like The Fall, Eastlink clearly digs repetition and arent afraid to use it as a weapon. For these Australian doper-scuzz minimalists, its all about the riff. Heavy, punishing, repetitive riffs where four guitars lock on to something intense and primal for four minutes. The band simply pummels tracks like Overtime and Spring St. into the ground, pausing only for an occasional frenzied guitar solo or blast of feedback and noise. Meanwhile, Dinnerchat and Thatchers Dead are weirdo space-rockers that wouldnt sound terribly out of place on Brain Records in the 70s." -Jay Hinman, Dynamite Hemorrhage.

IN THE RED

Los Angeles garage/punk band Endless Bummer follow up their debut EP, Ripper Current, with this full-length featuring 13 sonic slabs of wallop guaranteed to please any self-respecting fan of trash rock. Recorded by Ty Segall at his now defunct Sweat Lodge studio. "Lance Barresi and Liz Tooley may not be big garage names like Ty Segall or John Dwyer are, but as the founders of Permanent Records they're arguably just as important. They're responsible for putting out rippers by Purling Hiss, Cave, Running, Charles Albright, Obnox, Bitchin Bajas, and many others. Endless Bummer lives up to their noisy legacy. Joined by the Spits' Greg Toumassian, they churn out four songs of sludgy, dark, screaming garage pop." Pitchfork.
