33 - JOBARTEH, DAWDA - NORTHERN LIGHT GAMBIA NIGHT - (CD)
STERNS

The world 'musicianship' only tells half a story. Too-often assumed, rarely understood and seldom fashionable, it is a key ingredient in the story of Dawda Jobarteh's debut album. Nothern Light Gambian Night. Dawda is the grandson of Alhaji Bai Konte, the son of Amadou Bansang Joberteh and the nephew of bot Malamini Jobartehand Dembo Konte. In the world of tradiotional Manding music, in particular that of the West African kora, these are serious calling cards not to be taken lightly.

34 - JOBARTEH, DAWDA - TRANSITIONAL TIMES - (CD)
STERNS

Dawdas home is now firmly in Denmark. Here he has married and set up house. Here he has swapped the wedding and circumcision ceremonies that his uncles Malamini Jobarteh and Dembo Konte performed in rural Gambia, for educational tours of Scandinavia with bassist Moussa Diallo, or free-jazz perfomances with drummer Stefan Pasborg. Here with his own group he has appeared at rock festivals such as Roskilde, and from here he has ventured around the world onto stages in East Africa and clubs in New Delhi, India. Necessarily, Dawdas world view is modern and open-minded. His concerns are not the geneology of a local elite, but the impact of global economics on us all. Bright Sky Over Monrovia arose from a commission to write music for atheatrical production about blood diamonds. Efo concerns the frustration of nationally imposed border policies as theyaffect individuals. Yet his picture is never solely polemic. Whilst still a critic of polygamy, in Mba Sina, a song inhomage to his mothers co-wife, he is able to voice nuances that allow a more gentle interpretation. Today its perhaps more common for some of these issues to be expressed by the new generation of African and South American hip hop artistes. But Dawdas music is still firmly rooted in a tradition and when it looks outward, it does so to the more organic realms of jazz. Its no accident that the albums title reflects that of one of its tracks, a version of John Coltranes Transition, or that there is place for a free-wheeling improvisational duet betweenpercussion and treated kora. But ultimately Transitional Times, Dawdas second on Sterns Africa, is intensely personal. As Dawda himself notes, with most vocals and kora instrumentals recorded at home over several years, this "recording has been the soundtrack of my children and wife's dreams for many nights." We commend it to you.

35 - JUMA, ISSA -& SUPER WANYIKA- - WORLD DEFEATS THE GRANDFATHERS - (CD)
STERNS

This was the defining sound of Kenyan Swahili rumba in the late 70s and early 80s, and Issa Juma was a pivotal figure in both creating and giving it new directions. His powerful baritone voice was indisputably the best of the Wanyika clan and, constantly experimenting, his style could change with each producer and session. Carefully re-mastered, full-length recordings that include bona fide hits alongside rare, never-before-released tracks, this album is a long-overdue homage to a brilliant vocalist and band-leader, an innovative and accomplished musician who today is sadly missed.

36 - KABASELE, JOSEPH -A.K.A. LE GRAND KALLE- - LE GRAND KALLE - HIS LIFE, HIS MUSIC - (CD)
STERNS

Joseph Kabaselle - or the Grand kalle, as he was known to his fellow musicians, his fans and even to Heads of State - lies at the very centre of the great mosaic that is African populair music. Without him the picture would be unrecognisable.Kabasele led Orchestre African Jazz, the seminal Congolese rumba band which included the preeminent guitarist of the time, Dr. Nico, the singer and songwriter Tabu Ley Richereau and the saxophonist Manu Dibango. In the turbulent times before and after Congo's independence in 1960. Kalle and his band were the most influential in Africa, and today their sound is still a key foundation upon which its popular music is built. Sequenced chronologically and featuring recordings, some taken from shellac and vinyl that have been unavailable for decades, together with Kabasele's most famous works, this double album features a 104 page book in both English and French. Eloquently written, well-illustrated and insoghtfully researched with lyric excerpts translated from the original languages, it reveals the man, the music and its context as never before. Finally, Le Grand Kalle receives the testament he's always deserved!

37 - KAIRA BEN - SINGA - (CD)
STERNS

Singa is a fairly short but reasonably sweet debut disc by the group Kaira Ben, formed in Europe by a mix of Senegalese and Malian musicians. The latter element dominates -- lead singer Idrissa Magassa hails from Senegal but he played with Zani Diabate's much-missed Super Djata Band alongside Zoumana Diarra, scion of a Malian griot family, who co-wrote all the material with the third core member, percussionist/producer Abdramane Fall. "Bamba" opens close to traditional with bubbling balafon and acoustic guitar flavored with prominent sax from Tidiane Kone. Magassa has an appealing voice (even traces of Richie Havens' huskiness at times).

40 - KANTE, VIEUX - THE YOUNG MAN'S HARP - (CD)
STERNS

"Vieux Kante was born in 1974 in Niesmala in the Sikasso region of Mali" writes Banning Eyre, "Though blind from childhood he participated in music just like other kids. But his talent was obvious to all and he soon began borrowing his brothers six-string harp, the kamale ngoni (youth harp) while they were working in the fields, and learned to play the things he had heard on the radio and at local parties, where the instrument was then king. This instrument was not restricted by the secrecy and taboo surrounding hunters culture and, in fact, hadonly been invented in the 1960s. But in a few short years it had transformed village recreation throughout the Wassoulou region, so Vieux tapped into a deep vein of popular emotion when he emerged as one of the hottest young players." Towards the end of the 90s he visited Europe and recorded with Dutch saxophonist Hans Dulfer, and also with the pioneering big band, Fra Fra Sound, where he had a cameo appearance on Mali Jazz, their 1999 album. Back in Bamako he experimented with his instrument which, by 2000, boasted 12 strings. This gave him a wider range and what he called the "jazz notes". As Banning writes: "Vieux said that although they are not on the instrument, he could play them, "You have to do those yourself," he said, "using your own head." His fame spread across the villages and fields of the Wassoulou region of southern Mali. Songs were written in his honour and, somewhat confusingly, other artists with the same name also began featuring a kamale ngoni in their performance. "But when we met Vieux" Banning notes "he demonstrated amazing techniques . (and) it was obvious why he was considered one of the most dynamic and accomplished solo players in the country. At the time, word was he had recorded a cassette with his group, but it had yet to hit the market. Then, just a few months later in 2005, we heard that Vieux had died after a sudden illness."Its been a long wait, but finally that Mali-produced cassette finds an international audience on Sterns Africa as "The Young Mans Harp" features 3 songs with Kabadjan Diakite on vocals.

41 - KEITA, SALIF - SORO - (CD)
STERNS

Available again! The masterpiece of Malian Music. Salif Keita "Soro". Sora is the album that brought Salif Keita international stardom though he was already wellknown in West Africa from his work with The rail Band and Les Ambassadeurs. Keita's voice is in the peak form, soaring and swooping with awe-inspiring power. For these session, Keita has gathered an all-star band that is innovative, solid and turn-on-a-dim tight. The production, state of the art in 1987, sounds just as bright and fresh today. This Cd drwas its strength from the rich traditions of Malian culture, melded with cutting edge musical technology, and a global outlook. All of the tracks on Sora are crucial, though the bittersweat Cono and the intricate and epic title track Sora are standouts.

42 - KEKELE - CONGO LIFE - (CD)
STERNS

Kekele is a star studded Congolese band with vocalists Wuta-Mayi, Nyboma, Bumba Massa, and Loko Massengo with Syran Mbenza playing the acoustic guitar. The sound here is stunning, and the orchestration perfect, including beautifully layered acoustic guitars by Syran and Rigo Star, some tasty accordion spicing from Regis Gizavo of Madagascar, and on some tunes, an all-clarinet horn section (played by Caau de Queiroz), harking back to the early days of Congolese rumba. The violins on Loko Massengo's "Bebe Yaourt" is a revelation that this instrument marries well with the smooth vocals of Kkl. "Souvenirs-OK-Jazz," a Medley of Franco hits is the final drop that spills the bucket of sweetness, it just becomes too much.

43 - KEKELE - KINAVANA - (CD)
STERNS

Kekeles third album Kinavana pays tribute to the music of Guillermo Portabales. It comprises 12 songs that Portabales composed or recorded. In place of the original Spanish lyrics, the Kekele singers have written new Lingala lyrics that are decidedly not translations from Spanish. "BaKristo", for example, is based on the music of "El Carretero", but instead of telling a wagoners tale it denounces the efforts of evangelical churches in Africa to ban all music that is not Christian. The arrangements are also new, devised by Syran Mbenza and Papa Noel (back with Kekele after a hiatus forced by illness) with Nelson Hernandez, the Venezuelan arranger best known for his work with salsa stars like Celia Cruz and Oscar DLeon.

45 - KHEIR, AMIRA - ALSAHRAA - (CD)
STERNS

Backed by double bass, acoustic guitar and percussion, and with only the lightest of touches from other guest musicians, Amira Kheir could hardly be accused of over-producing her latest album, Alsahra. No, rather in the spirit of the album title, "The desert", her sound is clear and ascetic, and recorded in the acoustically beautiful space of the Union Chapel, London, it is true and honest reflection of Amira's own compelling live performances.

47 - KOUYATE, KANDIA - RENASCENCE - (CD)
STERNS

he Mande art of jeliya carries a long and complex tradition of fine distinctions and enless debates about the qualities that earn its hereditary poets and musicians the highest accolades and honourifics. But on the great jelimuolu (female singers) of our time, there is near-unanimity regarding Kandia Koyate: she is a ngara, perhaps the only one of her generation. More than a killed singer, a ngara possesses what many would say is a paranormal aura of majesty. In 2004 Kandia Kouaye suffered a stroke. here recovery was slow and difficult, and for seven years she hardly spoke and did not sing at all. In 2011 Ibrahima Sylla visited her home in Bamako and covinced her to return to the recording studio. Lamently he did not live to complete the album. He died in 2013 and Francois Breant, who had worked with him on such recording landmarks as Salif Keita"s Sora and Thione Seck's Orientation, together with Sylla's daughter Binetou, finished the project. Renascence is her resounding declaration of personal and artistic rebirth. Featuring on guitar Djely Moussa Kouyate...

49 - MADILU SYSTEM - LA BONNE HUMEUR - (CD)
STERNS

Jean Bialu Makies - or, as Franco dubbed him, "Madilu System" - was the wistful voice that featured in so many T.P.O.K. Jazz records of the 1980s: 'Marion', 'Tu Vois? (Mamou)', 'La Vie des Hommes' and many, many more. After Franco's death, Madilu's solo album of 1994, sand commentaire, confirmed him as one of Franco's most accomplished proteges, not just as a singer but also as a composer and lyricist. "It is imposible to know if this album sounds different in the knowledge that the singer died soon after completing it. But it surely would have been recognised as a milestone even if Madily System survived to hear the applause."

50 - MANGWANA, SAM - MARIA TEBBO (2 LPS ON ONE CD) - (CD)
STERNS

If you have to pick "the classic" Sam Mangwana album, this would be it. He worked with both Franco and Rochereau, so he had the pedigree by the '70s to do whatever he wanted. Mangwana's earthy, rumba-heavy protosoukous is a pleasure to listen to. Each guitar line from Syan M'Benza or Sammy Massamba seems to go on forever, as Mangwana croons (and croon is really the right word) about love and life and girls, girls, girls and the band spurs him on with sinuous and sultry (never either lewd or cute) rhythms. These 1979 tracks are a pan-African textbook, with hints of folk and pop from Angola, Cameroon and Zimbabwe always bubbling just under the surface. It is the perfect Mangwana album. Plus, the CD includes both the full Maria Tebbo plus another set of tracks from the "almost as good" Waka Waka from 1978.

52 - MANGWANA, SAM - SAM MANGWANA SINGS DINO VANGU - (CD)
STERNS

Sam Mangwana collection rates with the best of his career. If you enjoy soukous -- the swingy, guitar-driven style that evolved out of the Congolese version of the Cuban rumba -- than you love this album. The singing of Sam Mangwana is as good as ever, andmany of the songs, all written by Dino Vangu, foremr guitarist with Tabu Ley Rochereau, feature memorable melodies and excellent development, as well as the considerable guitar playing of Vangu. The fact that they are subtle does not prevent them being great fun and very danceable. For fans who likes Le Grand Kalle, Franco and Tabu Ley Rochereau.

During the 150s and 60s E.T. and the Tempos re-Africanised American swing, blending it with Caribbean melodies, Latin rhythms and indigenous elements from the musically rich culture of Ghana (The Gold Coast). Highlife spread like a bushfire across Africa and Beyond. Now, with the cooperationof the Mensah family and estate, RetrofAfric release this collection of 69 tracks which show that highlife has never died and why it lives on, consistently inspiring new generations of musicians and listeners.

54 - MISIANI, D.O. -& SHIRATI JAZZ- - THE KING OF HISTORY - (CD)
STERNS

D.O. Misiani was Shirati Jazz...Shirati Jazz were D.O. Misiani: it was his band, he - in the nicest of ways - called the shots and without him it simply would not have existed. Moreover without Daniel Owino a.k.a. Mwalimu (teacher) at the helm, benga, the energetic and hypnotically involving music of the Luo-speaking people of Kenya, would not be where it is today. Misiani and Shirati were the first stars, their success set a standard that others could only follow.

55 - MODIBO, ASKIA - WASS REGGAE - (CD)
STERNS

Wass Reggae unites two cultures of music in the Western African nation of Mali. It melds together the traditional pentatonic music of the Wassoulou (also the Tamachek, Bambara and Songhai) with the music of the Youth, reggae. The result is desert blues with a reggae back-beat. Wass Reggae comments on social ills, like bad traffic jams in Bamako and the devaluation of the Franc CFA. Meanwhile, the quiet complexities of dancing guitars, popping percussion and sensual vocals keep the music interesting. Askio Modibo started his career first in an offshoot of the Mailian supergroup Les Ambassadeurs, then as a guitarist with Alpha Blondy's pre-Solar System line-up. A wealthy woman agreed to be his patron and sponsored his solo career. Three releases beginning in 1988 with his band Tjiladeh was enough to give Modibo enough recognition to record with West Africa's premier producer, Ibrahima Sylla, inside a Paris studio. The result, Wass Reggae, is a timeless piece that defines all that is great about African Reggae. This album became a favorite among the world music staff at KAUR.

56 - MORENO & L'ORCH FIRST MOJA-ONE - SISTER PILI + 2 - (CD)
STERNS

Moreno Batamba's flame burned right bright and beautiful, but short. Way too short. In 1993, with an album riding the Kenyan Charts, he died aged only 38 and while his name still raise fond memories in Kenya, on the international stage he has become almost invisible. Originally from Kisangani in eastern Congo (then Zaire). Moreno left school for music in 1971 and moved to join fellow congolese musicians in Uganda and 2 years later in Kenya and sings for the renowned Orchestra Safari Sound. In 1983 Moreno joined Samba mapangela's Orchestra Virunga for the classic Mabiala album. In between he started up L' Orch Bana Nzadi and several Orchestra Mojo One bands...Check out this fines Moreno work. The joy and energy in these recordings show just why.
