32 - SUN RA - THE ROAD TO DESTINY (LOST REEL 6) - (CD)
TRANSPARENCY

Last in the series of 6 "Lost Reel" albums, this one captures the master live at the Gibus in Paris on October 18, 1973. Recorded on stage by the group's drummer, this ultra-rarity went unheard for 37 years and was previously unknown to collectors or discographers. The centerpiece of the recording is a 28-minute vocal "cosmo-drama" between Sun Ra and June Tyson where they meet somewhere in space on the road to destiny and have a brilliant and funny discussion while the Arkestra plays continuously behind them.

33 - SUN RA - THE SATURN SINGLES VOL. 1: 1954-1958 - (LP)
JEANNE DIELMAN

Herman Poole Blount, better known to the world as Sun Ra, lived more musical lives in his 79 years on this planet (and others) than seems possible. In the 30s he was the most rigorous bandleader in Birmingham, heading the Sonny Blount Orchestra and filling every waking moment with music or philosophical discussions, by the 40s he had moved to Chicago and performed with luminaries such as Wynonie Harris, Fletcher Henderson, and Coleman Hawkins. By the 50s he had changed his name to Sun Ra and began performing with longtime Arkestra bandmates John Gilmore and Marshall Allen. Ra started his own label, El Saturn (or Saturn), to release his own recordings as well as those featuring the Arkestra backing local R&B and doo-wop groups. Though the genres showcased here are more pop than the world has come to expect from Sun Ra, the vibe and feel is purely cosmic, producing some of the wildest, strangest R&B ever created on this side of the sun. Essential early Sun Ra performances and productions.

TRACKLISTING: 01. A Foggy Day 02. Daddy's Gonna Tell You No Lie 03. Dreaming 04. Daddy's Gonna Tell You No Lie 05. Bye Bye 06. Somebody's In Love 07. Medicine For A Nightmare 08. Saturn 09. Supersonic Jazz 10. Happy New Year To You! 11. It's Christmas Time 12. Muck Muck 13. Hot Skillet Mama 14. Great Balls Of Fire 15. Hours After

36 - SUN RA - THE UNIVERSE SEND ME - (CD)
TRANSPARENCY

Volume 5 of "The Lost Reel Collection" features music from two separate tapes. The first tape is from a 1972 short recording at the Seaport Museum in New York City. The acoustics sound similar to the likes an outdoor concert. The featured track is Discipline 27-ll, which is purely instrumental and may be the earliest recording of this particular version. In 1973, Ras declamation like "Life is Splendid" and "What Planet Is This?" was added on top of the music theme. The second tape is from a 1973 recording in Paris, France, although the acoustics are quite different, it's a natural segue from the Seaport Museum tape opening with the Discipline 27-ll theme and the by-now more familiar declamation which we title as "The Universe Sent Me". The beauty of the "reed" section is clearly heard during this track due to the apparent close proximity of the tape machine and the microphone setup.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Outer Spaceways Incorporated 02. Untitled Improvisation 03. Discipline 27 (instrumental) 04. The Universe Sent Me 05. Discipline 99 06. Watusi 07. Untitled Improvisation
