331 - SCHNEIDER KACIREK - SHADOWS DOCUMENT - (CD)
BUREAU B

Kenia meets Krautronics Stefan Schneider and Sven Kacirek bring African rhythms into dark electronica Under the auspices of the Goethe Institute and Unesco, Stefan Schneider and Sven Kacirek have spent a fair amount of time in Kenya in recent years. As they travelled the country, they recorded rare, traditional music in different locations, subsequently releasing two albums of unembellished field recordings to document their findings. "Shadows Documents" takes a different approach: Schneider and Kacirek graft their acoustically gleaned impressions of Kenya onto pure electronic templates (with analogue accents). Field recordings as such cannot be heard. A central role is played by the repetitive, hypnotic element which is so integral to tribal music with its complex rhythms. Both musicians share a fascination with these very rhythms, a recurring theme in their careers to date: clearly audible in Stefan Schneiders work with Kreidler and To Rococo Rot, as well as on his albums with Hans-Joachim Roedelius. In Kacireks case we can look to his solo albums for evidence, in particular on the much lauded "Kenya Sessions". The duos modus operandi differs from that of renowned Krautrock pairings such as Dieter Moebius/Mani Neumeier or Michael Rother/ Klaus Dinger (= NEU!), where the drum kit plays a dominant role as the driving force. With Schneider and Kacirek, drums mutate into a sort of synthesizer instrument, almost subliminally melting into the sound of other instruments as a virtual observer, adding a certain nuance here and there, rather than performing a more catalytic function. Played with greater restraint, the drums create variations, translating physique into precision. Synthesizers, meanwhile, assume many of the percussive duties. A prominent guest musician joins the duo on one track. Niklas Addo Nettey, a Berlin resident since the early 80s, played with Fela Kuti 70.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Doubles (4:52) 02. Hand An Wand (4:15) 03. To Microphone (4:27) 04. Birds, Bell And Sticks (2:31) 05. Low Rhythm (5:09) 06. Electro Electronics (5:45) 07. Talwerk (4:33) 08. We Will Need Each Other (2:37) 09. Spiegelmotiv (6:12)

333 - SCHNEIDER TM - CONSTRUCTION SOUNDS - (CD)
BUREAU B

It happened like this: While improvising at home with his electronic equipment, Dresselhaus at some point noticed that his music was increasingly beginning to imitate the sounds and structures of the construction site noise that surrounded him daily for up to 15 hours at a time and periodically brought him to the brink of a nervous breakdown. Perhaps as a kind of defense mechanism, he began to record the sounds and patterns produced by the construction workers and their machines, and even began to have fun in doing so. Gradually he had the feeling that the workers, whether consciously or unconsciously, were using their tools much like musical instruments, even interacting, as if they were producing improvised music. "Construction Sounds" combines these moments with the electronic recordings that Dresselhaus made during this period. He only minimally processed the recordings, as he wanted to make "those beautiful moments, generated by unknown construction workers, which I sometimes even heard as cosmic music" available to a wider audience as faithfully as possible.Under no circumstances should one confuse "Construction Sounds" with industrial music, which either uses conventional instruments to sound like factory noise (like Kluster in 1970) or uses industrial noises as mere atmospheric or rhythmic additions to music made using instruments, as Einsturzende Neubauten did in the early 80s. For Dresselhaus, the sounds of construction are the music itself. Important: This album is not a statement, it's just beautiful music. Anyone delving into these sounds will experience it much like Dresselhaus: From the cacophony, a symphony.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Construction Sounds (13:06) 02. Container (6:15) 03. Pneumanisch (1:40) 04. Grinder In The Sky (8:24) 05. Container Redux (1:25) 06. Bimanual Complexity (10:42)

335 - SCHNEIDER TM - GUITAR SOUNDS - (CD)
BUREAU B

"Sounds" series part two: Electric guitar explorations. Dirk Dresselhaus a.k.a. Schneider TM turned building site noise into music on "Construction Sounds", the album which preceded "Guitar Sounds". On his latest offering, he explores the full potential of the electric guitar and an array of effects.Dresselhaus is no stranger to the instrument, it is fair to say. He played guitar in the 1990s for several experimental indie combos and has made liberal, idiosyncratic use of the instrument over the past couple of decades as Schneider TM in electronic music, film, radio plays and various other sound projects. Technical perfection is not paramount on "Guitar Sounds". The focus is on spontaneity, improvisation-if the result is flawed in the classic sense of the word, this concerns him not one iota. Dresselhaus is interested in atmosphere, in the intensity and magic of the initial moment when decisions are made and played without knowing which direction they will take or where they might end-music without a safety net, so to speak.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Landslide (8:18) 02. Teilhard (11:15) 03. First Of May (4:36) 04. Elefantenhaut (4:40) 05. Ueberzahl (17:54)

349 - SCHNITZLER, CONRAD - FILMMUSIK 1 - (CD)
BUREAU B

In Conrad Schnitzler's sprawling archive, there are two tapes marked "Filmmusik 1975 A" and "Filmmusik 1980 B". It is hard to say which videos this music belongs to, particularly as the pieces have been left untitled. Perhaps there isn't really any film material at all. The dates are of no great help either, since the tapes feature the same tracks, albeit in varying degrees of quality. "Filmmusik 1" presents an initial selection of these finds, presented to us by Schnitzler's musical partner for many years and guardian of the archive, Wolfgang Seidel. The tracks reveal much about how Schnitzler worked. He recorded individual tracks on cassettes and then combined them, also using them live in his so-called cassette concerts. Thus we recognize certain recurring melodies, sometimes fragmented, in different places. Some tracks have the same bass loop and rhythm, only the sounds and effects have changed. The music on the "Filmmusik" tapes is extraordinarily accessible for Schnitzler: hypnotic bass lines, stoic drum rhythms, dark drones, crystalline shards of melody. Wolfgang Seidel (Populaere Mechanik, Ton Steine Scherben) talks more about Schnitzler's life and work in the liner notes.Features ten untitled tracks between 2:03 und 7:07 minutes.

Shortly after we released "Filmmusik 1", Jin Kawai, curator of the official Schnitzler website www.fancymoon.com, contacted us to set us right. In 2009, whilst sorting through reels of film (some shot by Schnitzler himself) and music to upload to the site, Kawai was particularly drawn to one piece entitled "Gute Fahrt". Were there any more tracks like this? Schnitzler told him there were and sent Kawai all of the other recordings. One half of "Filmmusik 2" comprises tracks from the 1975 series, the other half is a 23 minute piece with the title "Lichtpunkte und schwarze Zeichen". This music was actually written for a film (which can also be found on the internet, naturally) in 1978. We were delighted to find it in 2015 and enthusiastically searched the Schnitzler archives for more of the same. This led us to the (in some cases, incorrectly labelled) 1975 recordings and the rest is history ...

Belatedly released on LP (1981) and lacking in discographical detail, this aspect is easily overlooked. On careful listening, as Schnitzler connoisseurs will also realize instantly, this album reveals itself to be an important milestone, illuminating a clear path into the future. 359 - SCHNITZLER, CONRAD - KOLLEKTION 05 - (CD)
BUREAU B

Things come full circle. In 1976 Thomas Fehlmann arrives in Hamburg to study art at the HfBK. In 1979 he attends a guest lecture by Conrad Schnitzler, who demonstrates to students how the "extended definition of art" established by Joseph Beuys can be applied to music. This proves to be a crucial element in Fehlmann's decision to become a musician. And now, over 35 years later, he has compiled our fifth collection, arranging, in uniquely harmonious fashion, sixteen pieces from the early 1980s by the man who broadened his horizons, Conrad Schnitzler. The gateway to Schnitzler's sonic cosmos has been flung wide open.About Conrad Schnitzler: Conrad Schnitzler (1937-2011), composer and concept artist, is one of the most important representatives of Germanys electronic music avant-garde.
