271 - UV RACE - RACISM - (CD)
IN THE RED

God is saying this to you: Racism is the third album by Australias most genius avant-tards The UV Race, dragging melodious pop songs through a devolved, malodorous glam-punk aesthetic. It continues the stylistic jump from their self-titled debut to sophomore full-length Homo, further exploring the possibilities of the first wave of punk, incorporating orchestral arrangements and gutter-glitter psych stomp, like if Vom tried to write their own Forever Changes; like if the Electric Eels backed up Bolan or if The Fall put out a record on Crass Records. There are tuneful lamentations of heartbreak and loss alongside very debased, toilet-humor punk licks; Lovecraftian psych-cult morbidity at one moment and rousing anti-anthems against self denial the next. It has been an especially productive year for the band-they are about to launch their first feature-length film, Autonomy and Deliberation, and the soundtrack LP recorded for the film comes alongside Racism, a split 7-inch with Native Cats (on Ride the Snake), a split live LP with Eddy Current Suppression Ring (on Almost Ready, originally released on a limited run of cassettes back in 2008), and the Gypsy King single (from Racism, on HoZac). All this, plus the output of the numerous other Melbourne bands in which members of UV Race play-Asps, Dick Diver, East Link, Guy & Marcus Blackman Experimentation, Lower Plenty, School of Radiant Living, Soma Coma, Straightjacket Nation and Total Control-reveal a relentless commitment for the sake of the song..

273 - VICTIMS (AUSTRALIA) - HORROR SMASH EP - (7")
IN THE RED

"Punk music, at its most effective, its most important, exists at a nexus of a few simple but important ideas. Punk needs to be youthful, it needs to be reactionary, it needs to be short-lived and it needs to be controversial. So for a group of twenty-something Australians, excitable as the frontline first wave of kids responding to both the Ramones and the Sex Pistols (yet still influenced by the New York Dolls and Stooges and Flamin Groovies), who existed for but barely for a year from 1977-1978 and wrote songs about serial killers, high school girls and hating disco.well, Id argue they are the most perfect punk band ever. "The band was Dave Flick (aka Dave Faulkner later of the Hoodoo Gurus) on guitar and vocals, Rudolph V (Dave Cardwell) on bass and James Baker on drums. Best known for their classic Television Addict, that song is but the tip of the iceberg of the bands powers. Having self-released two godhead 7-inches during their brief existence, the seven songs on those singles are absolute cannon at this point. Quintessential, pure, unfuckwithable. And all that is just side one of the LP. "Side two contains a bounty of unreleased-for-decades demos of nine otherwise undocumented Victims originals. Demos in name alone, these properly recorded songs brim with all the identifying marks of the known Victims classics.irreverence, taking the piss, murderers and an invigorating youthful attitude. "The last thing to remember about punk as a theory, an aesthetic, is that its ideas are all bullshit anyway. Thats easily proved by the 7-inch EP released alongside this release of new recordings of Charlie, Horror Smash, I Wanna Be With You and Everynite which proves that the Victims now (featuring Ray Ahn from the Hard-Ons on bass), some 40 years after their heyday, could still easily take on any au courant band half their age." - Ben Blackwell Reissue of classic Australian punk band with unreleased tracks and an EP of new recordings

275 - VOLT - VOLT - (LP)
IN THE RED

Debut full length from French trio Volt is a followup to 2003's well received 12 inch EP. Unsettling electro rhythms under subtle vocal transmissions turn your stomach and pry their way into your heart with the scathing, yet melodic, simplicity that has to be heard to be believed." Synth-led garage punk attack will satisfy fans of In The Red artists such as the Black Lips, the Lost Sounds, and Jay Reatard.

276 - WAND - GOLEM - (CD)
IN THE RED

Following up their debut full-length on Ty Segalls God? label, Wand presents their second album, Golem, on In The Red. Recording with Chris Woodhouse at his Hanger studio in Sacramento, Wand summons the dark and heavy power of the riff. Back in September 2013, Wand was quietly dismembered and ritually eaten in the hills near Dodger Stadium. Wand was reborn as "Wand"-an obese organ falsely organized as four overjoyous nerds. Four flesh balloons betting on a few aging amplifiers. Rumor has it they listen to Here Come the Warm Jets on loop all day and plot mail fraud. Whats more, they allegedely stole Dale Crovers car and sacrificed it to the weather near the Los Angeles County Line. A few things, at least, are certain: Wand hears ghosts. Wand prefers serpents. The Sun is the mother of every fiction. All phenomena will be consumed in alphabetical order, but desire will recirculate ad infinitum. If all else fails, Wand will just devour more hands. Wand is coming your way soon..

278 - WAND - MACHINE MAN/M.E. - (7")
IN THE RED

Brand new seven inch single from Wand featuring two exclusive tracks. The A side, Machine Man, is a heavy and dark original which wouldve sounded right at home on their Golem LP. The B side, M.E., is a Tubeway Army cover which has been transformed into a heavy riff pummeler here. An essential piece of wax if ever there was one!.

279 - WARM DRAG - WARM DRAG - (LP)
IN THE RED

Warm Drag are a musical two piece, a two-sided conversation, two devils on your shoulders, one of them telling you to take that drug, sleep with that person and steal that car, the other devil whispering to hit the reverb pedal and turn the volume all the way up. The band listens to both devils, and they are bringing their samplers-and-switchblade post-noir noise disco to audiences this summer, with their self-titled debut on In The Red. The two people in the band do specific things: Vashti Windish sings, the way Siouxsie sang power, the way Nico sang allure, the way Patti sang sex, while Paul Quattrone makes the noise with two Akai MPC 1000 samplers. These beats pummel or seduce, usually simultaneously, with synths that soar like Morricone or pump like DAF, and with gloriously twangy guitars that clang and echo like Duane Eddy spiraling down a k-hole. Windish and Quattrone have history. Theyve lived and theyve been in bands. Quattrone is a drummer in the current powerhouse Oh Sees lineup, which should be enough of a recommendation for anyone, but hes also been in !!! and Modey Lemon too. Windish cut her teeth in bands including the K-Holes and Golden Triangle, back in her native New York. A chance reunion in Los Angeles led Quattrone and Windish to attempt the outlandish ambition of marrying her love for the genre-defying genius of Blondies Parallel Lines (the first cassette she ever owned) to Quattrones love of The Bomb Squads production styles. Theyve been winning over notoriously-inert Los Angeles audiences for a year now. An early show caught the eye of Ian Svenonius. "Their cut-up collage of electronic stomp-music embodied everything people were searching for that summer," he remembers. "There were just two of them but the sound was magnificent."

281 - WATERY LOVE - DECORATIVE FEEDING - (CD)
IN THE RED

"Take it from me, orbitin the Earth over n over aint all its cracked up to be. When I was asked to hop on board a Soyuz headed to the International Space Station (Assignment: Critical Observation), I reckoned thisd be the trip of a lifetime. Space, the final frontier. And how bout that view? But now I feel like Ive been here that long-a lifetime, that is. You know, the food aint much to speak of, plus I gotta constantly make sure I dont make no crumbs, else they might fuck up our air breathin filters. Crumbs! The things one learns. Drinkin aint no fun neither, less you get your jollies sippin daquiris from a straw out a plastic bag, like some swishy, doe-eyed Deadhead. And dont even get me started on hygiene issues! I believe I could take a life for a proper bubble bath right about now (I miss my ducky, too). Which is all just a lumberin yet apropos segue to the matter at hand: this debut LP by Watery Love. "Now, any right-minded corncob south of the Van Allen Belt knows them three precedin 7-inches via Richie, Siltbreeze and Negative Guestlist smacked kernels hard, and that smolderin ferocity has naturally been carried over here. The glow n throb whats got got is as much the byproduct of the eternal bioluminescence of Iron Cross or Third World War as an appreciation for the corroded, fractoluminescence exuded once upon a time by Chain Gang, Slow Death EP-era Leather Nun n The Gordons. Sure, their environment might seem cold and uncarin-even downright sociopathic-but behind that facade of David Goodis-like grimness are four sodbusters chompin to have a good time. When singer Richie Charles hollers "Im a skull!" who among the masses would not rush headlong to get a lick off that boney pate? It aint about Rofinol, people, its about the roof, and how far can Watery Love raise the fucker. Unlike you dickheads, Im sittin pretty in the catbird seat (what part of me bein out to space did you miss?) so let me say, keep it comin! Higher n higher, nose to the grindstone and all that. Dont worry, Ill stop ya when ya get here. And one more thing-dont forget to bring a six pack. Well need it." -Roland Seward Woodbe International Space Station, Outer Space Call Sign: Alphar.

287 - WOLFMANHATTAN PROJECT, THE - BLUE GENE STEW - (LP)
IN THE RED

Merriam-Webster definition of supergroup: a rock group made up of prominent former members of other rock groups, also: an extremely successful rock group. While the definition of "extremely successful" may differ, there can be no arguing that Wolfmanhattan Project are a supergroup. This three piece features Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Lydia Lunchs Retrovirus), Mick Collins (Gories, Dirtbombs) and Kid Congo Powers (Gun Club, The Cramps, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Pink Monkey Birds) and their collective track record beats Blind Faith, West, Bruce & Laing and The Power Stations resumes combined! All three members write, sing and play in this band and, for anyone familiar with the members other bands, this stuff is as twisted and great as one can hope for. Everyone involved brings flavors from their past efforts and its all mixed together into one unholy rock n roll gumbo. Its sleazy, swampy, trashy, no-wavey, weird and rocking! Lydia Lunch even makes an appearance, which makes this album that much more super! Trashy no-wave rock supergroup featuring Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Lydia Lunchs Retrovirus), Mick Collins (Gories, Dirtbombs) and Kid Congo Powers (Gun Club, The Cramps, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Pink Monkey Birds)

292 - Z., LILI - THE TWO OF US - (LP)
IN THE RED

After previous achievements with VOLT, THE SPLASH FOUR, THE NO-TALENTS, and her past collection of home tapes, LILI Z. comes back with fifteen new 8-track cassette living room recordings. Twisted into shapes that vaguely resemble seam-bursting garage punk, the songs' (thirteen originals and reworkings with Lili Z. lyrics of a Bela Bartok piece and an old Rondos chestnut) charm lies in their unpredictability. Sometimes it's a little late-'70s punk rock, sometimes it's catchy, metronome-like electropunk, sometimes it's pure guitar noise freakouts, and sometimes it's experimental tooling around. But most of all, it's pure Lili Z., recorded at home at her ost intimate. A sort of musical diary, The Two of Us comes with a stunning, full-color gatefold sleeve of Lili's collages and meticulous illustrations for each song. This vinyl edition is limited to 1,000 and includes a bonus track not on the CD version.

293 - ZIG ZAGS - ZIG ZAGS - (CD)
IN THE RED

In the year 2014, in the ruins of the city once known as Los Angeles, three underworld dwellers with one job, one hot tub and one unkillable riff between them knew they had to make a ripping record-or die trying. This is their story. Guitarist Jed, bassist Patrick and drummer Bobby started in a room lit by a single green light, which changed them from humans to Zig Zags in the summer of 2010. Within the next four years, theyd record a song with Iggy Pop and an album with Ty Segall and go from playing house parties for pizza to staring off the stage at the Fillmore West. Before them had come giants-bands like Kiss and Sabbath whose names were carved into desks in detention for decades. Before them had come mutants, heavy metal and punk bands like the Dictators and Pentagram that spun into the void of history after failed orbital rendezvous with the fame theyd deserved. And before them had come freaks, one-known-copy private-press insanities like J.T. IV, White Boy and the Average Rat Band-the bands that happened when someone with a guitar thought fuck it loud enough for the tape to pick up. Those were visionaries, each of them, even if most of them paid-or never got paid-for it. And Zig Zags had a vision, too. It was a dark and weird one, the kind of thing you see flickering on the monitor when your stolen spaceship wakes you up from cryo-sleep, or the kind of thing that flashes across the inside of your forehead when you wake up hungover from sleeping in your van. Theirs was the nightmare of the insane and the all-too-normal, the Bermuda Triangle between sci-fi and lo-fi and no-budget, the Twilight Zone twist ending where it turns out everyone else was an alien the whole time. When Cliff Burton wore that Misfits shirt-Zig Zags. When the Emergency Broadcast System interrupts that John Carpenter movie-Zig Zags. When a soggy pile of Thrasher mags and Jack Kirby comics spill out of a dumpster behind the Sunday School-Zig Zags. When the Ramones were scared of the basement and the Angry Samoans couldnt find the right side of their mind-Zig Zags. When a kid breaks his elbow copying a WWF heels piledriver and starts laughing instead of crying-Zig Zags. And when the electricity goes off forever and torchlight reflects off chrome-Zig Zags. All of this and more becomes real on the Zig Zags self-titled debut LP, recorded and produced by Ty Segall for In The Red. In twelve songs, they chainsaw through weirdo film and caveman rock and space noise and make smart sound so dumb it turns inside-out and becomes brilliant. Their very first 7-inch had a song called "Scavenger" cuz thats what Zig Zags do-dig through garbage to find genius. In 2014, it turns out they did make their ripping record. But its up to you to figure out the twist ending..

294 - ZIG ZAGS - ZIG ZAGS - (LP)
