278 - STEIDLE, SOKO - PLAYED DUKE ELLINGTON - (CD)
JAZZWERKSTATT

Notice the past tense in 'SOKO Steidle Played Duke Ellington', since, needless to say, Oliver Steidle, Rudi Mahall, Jan Roder and Henrik Walsdorff have played Ellington sometime, - not on this CD, however. "We wanted to name the CD as if we had played Ellington", says drummer Steidle for the Berlin four who arealways joking around. "It is definitely a dig at fellow musicians, who merely play along standards. We playthrough all song titles, from 'In A Sentimental Mut' (i.e. courage) or 'Flusch Life' to 'Felse mich im Rhythmus' (a crude translation of 'Rockin' in Rhythm'), and these are all originals by SOKO Steidle." "The band's sound is defined by the fact that we play together in this setting for about ten years now", remarks OliverSteidle. "This means things evolve, they happen by intuition. With Jan Roder I can stretch therhythm as if we were playing faster or slower, - you can't figure it out, and that is important." Roder's tugging bass and the sounds from (bass-) clarinetist Mahall grappling with those from altoist Walsdorff are the ingredients of this music. "You have to find structures out of nowhere," says Steidle, "we don't want to be as precise and perfect as possible, - empathy, intuition and attentive listening are mostimportant to us."

295 - VARIOUS - A TRIBUTE TO ORNETTE - (CD)
JAZZWERKSTATT

3cd box feat ;JW 079 - DAVE LIEBMAN GROUP | TURNAROUND - THE MUSIC OF ORNETTE COLEMAN .A lot has been written about the music and legacy of Ornette Coleman, his 'harmelodic' approach and overall influence. If only for his first recordings in the late 50s and early 60s, especially 'Free Jazz' with the double quartets, he wouldve made musical history. Above all as in any great music, it is the spirit that shines brightest. In Ornettes music there is a joyful spirit which permeates throughout and explains why people love his art as they do. His music expresses an irrepressible joie de vivre, uplifting and mournful at the same time, playful and deadly serious-a full view of the human condition. With deep respect to a true individualist and master of his art, I hope you enjoy our Ornette Coleman voyage. Dave Liebman .JW 115 - BRUNING /GRIENER/PETROWSKY/PRINS | ORNETTE ET CETERA .The best way of failing to emulate a role model is to imitate it. But on this album there are allusions and associations with Ornettes music as well as spontaneous original compositions - but there are no imitations. Drawing on the resources of Ornette Coleman is tantamount to drawing on the resources offreedom: Here an "et cetera" is not a clich, but a crucial part of the whole - and so on, and so forth, one thing leads to another. Music in the spirit of Coleman goes far beyond Ornette. His compositions are nothing more than springboards for his rhetorical question: "What do you play when you have already played the theme?"This exceptional quartet is not only inspired at the Hommage à Ornette - also, and above all, in Etcetera. As a union of sounds the four fly through space in the true tradition of OC, who once said: "It is possible to play in unison even if everyone is playing in a different key." The quartet follows his lead in the perfection of the imperfect, in giving meaning to the coincidental, in the intuitive knowledge with which the individual voices create something they all hold in common. It is a kind of mobile architecture. Even the location of this CD recording sheds light on recent jazz history. The recording sessions were inspired by a studio in the grounds of the former East German broadcasting corporation - a place intimately familiar to Ernst-Ludwig Petrowksy as an island, a sound capsule in the midst of decline.Bert NoglikJW 154 - ORNETTE COLEMAN | LIVEFree Jazz, A Collective Improvisation, was recorded by Ornette Coleman around Christmas 1960 for Atlantic Records: the album's title soon evolved into a label for a new musical genre. Ornette Coleman was a pioneer and motor of this music and he remained seminal. He died, aged 85, on June 11, 2015.Ulli Blobel

297 - VARIOUS - BERLIN BOX VOL.1 - (CD)
JAZZWERKSTATT

JW 022 | STEVE LACY & MAL WALDRON |LIVE IN BERLIN .This CD looks back on two momentous events in the history of jazz: the only concert that the legendary Max Roach gave in the former East Germany and at Jazzb Berlin, the country's most important jazzfestival, which was held annually between 1977 and 1989. The 1984 concert brought together the internationally acclaimed trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, who had been playing with Roach since 1971 and hence longer than anyone else, Odeon Pope, who had been in the ensemble since 1979 and who being experienced in free jazz had a lot to do with the most recent innovations, and the bass player Tyrone Brown, who had joined in 1983. All of them were excellent soloists. The quartet breathes new life into the once highly popular bebop themes 'Jordu' and 'Good Bait', making for a surprise in the latter with its introduction of the organic, yet original 3/4-time that was so typical of Roach. After an astounding anthem-like introduction, Coltrane's 'Giant Steps' turns into a crazy speed trip with a truly wonderful tenor solo and that unmistakable Max Roach solo style. Although 'Perdido', an Ellington swing number, fi ts the profi le of timeless modernism and allows everyone a solo. By contrast 'Six Bits' is an exquisite tour de force of musicianship. Here, Roach is the shouter with humorous, improvised lyrics, while Cecil Bridgewater demonstrates similarly comic gifts on the mouthpiece of his trumpet (reaping laughter and a special round of applause for weaving in a quotation from 'Struttin' with some Barbecue'). The tenor sax eventually joins in to create an imaginatively upbeat dialogue..JW 069 | MAX ROACH | LIVE IN BERLIN .This CD looks back on two momentous events in the history of jazz: the only concert that the legendary Max Roach gave in the former East Germany and at Jazzb Berlin, the country's most important jazzfestival, which was held annually between 1977 and 1989. If David Friesen weren't already held in high esteem as an instrumentalist and composer, you'd just have to pay him respect for the company he shares. He presents himself in the trio with the jazz legend Clark Terry and the last month decedent Bud Shank, one of the key fi gures of the west coast jazz. After listening to the virtuosity and imaginativeness displayed in these selected standards and a blues tune, you'll probably agree that this unlikely crew doesn't need no rhythm section.
